God's Love...

It could be argued that the Bible is a love story. It is the story

of a spurned lover who continually attempts to court His beloved into relationship,

but is turned away time and time again in favor of another. Some hear this lover’s

call, but many do not and yet this spurned lover still attempts to court the one who

has not heard His voice. In a very real sense, the Bible paints a picture of hope.

The Gospels carry forward from the Old Testament a hope that asks, “I know I

have not heeded your call, Almighty God, but will you give me another chance?”

In speaking about God’s love for us, a Franciscan priest, Fr. Leo Clifford,

once said, “We usually think about making God angry not about making him sad.

This says staggering things about God and about us. Is it possible that we, sinners

of the earth, have power over the heart of God? Yes! This is true! Heartbreak

always presupposes love. Other people can infuriate you, annoy you, disappoint

you, but no one can break your heart except the one you love. That makes love a

risky business. Love makes us vulnerable. And God has taken that risk with you

and me. We don’t go far in the Bible before we find God in Genesis calling out,

“Adam…where are you?”” This speaks volumes about the spurned lover who

wears His heart on his sleeve taking chance after chance in the hope that those

whom He loves with all His being will turn to Him and respond in kind.

God pours out His love and His life on those who do not care and do not

respond in kind. As has been said, the sun shines on the good and the bad and the

rain falls on the just and the unjust. It is this same God who, in the person of Jesus

Christ, we see and come to know even better in the Gospels…that loves those who

listen and those who do not. Jesus Christ is the broken-hearted lover who hangs on

the cross and weeps for those who could care less about His coming, about His

tireless love or about His sacrifice. Catholics have been characterized as a gloomy

and sad people. This might be true if God’s love and mercy died with His son on

the cross. But Jesus rose from the dead…and with His resurrection His tireless

love does not end. Any cause for our sorrow is turned to further hope and a

renewal of love because of the resurrection.

There is a poem written by an anonymous Christian that captures God’s love

for us. In the poem our Lord is speaking to Judas, the man who betrayed Him.

“Judas, if true love never ceases, how could you, my friend, have come to this: to

sell me for thirty silver pieces, betray Me with a kiss? Judas, remember what I

taught you, do not despair while hanging on that rope, It’s because you sinned that

I sought you, I came to give you hope. Judas, let’s pray and hang together; you on

your halter, I upon my hill. Dear friend, even if you loved Me never…you know I

love you still.” Lord, for the times I have not heeded your call…please give me

another chance.

May God Bless You All abundantly this Thanksgiving. Dn. Jack
