PARISH & COMMUNITY
KICKING-OFF A NEW YEAR OF
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION!
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 10:30AM MASS
This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on Sept.16. The 2019 theme: “Stay with Us.” Those who the Community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to be commissioned for their ministry. Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. We invite the entire Parish community, and especially families of children enrolled in our Religious Education
family, to join us for refreshments and fellowship following the 10:30am Mass. Please join us as we
welcome our young people and thank our catechists for all they do to the share the light of faith with our
youth and their families.
PRAYER FOR CATECHISTS O God, our Heavenly Father,
You have given us the gift of these catechists to be heralds of the Gospel to our parish family.
We lift them up to you in thanksgiving and intercede for them concerning their hopes and needs.
May we be attentive to the presence of your Word in them, a Word that lifts up and affirms, calls forth
and challenges, is compassionate and consoles. We pray that our parish family will always be blessed with those who have responded to the call to share
in Christ’s prophetic mission as catechists. May we too be open to the universal call to service that Christ addresses to all of his disciples, contributing our
gifts to the communion of faith, the Church. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
CALLING ALL CHILDREN! All students in second grade or higher are invited to join our Youth Choir. If you enjoy singing and/or playing
a musical instrument, please consider being part of our talented Youth Choir under the direction of Ms. Angela Palumbo. Practices are held one hour before Mass, so don’t hesitate to sign up! Interested? Call 201-529-2294; e-mail [email protected] .

“Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after me
cannot be my disciple.” The First Reading today from the Book of Wisdom puts into perspective Jesus’ hard sayings in today’s Gospel. Jesus asks that we are to carry our cross in order to be his disciple. In this sense, our cross is not a physical thing as it was for Jesus and on which He died. Only in the wisdom of God and through the power of God’s spirit can we hear, not to mention, do, what Jesus asks. To become his disciple, one must first accede to Jesus’ demand to renounce all possessions, and indeed, one’s very self. Only then can we be as available and open as God requires. What the One who calls gives disciples in return is beyond calculation—fullness of new Life!
Our crosses come in many shapes, sizes and weights. And they can be different for each person – losing a child or spouse, personal or family illness, addiction, financial troubles, loneliness and on and on…but all of them remind us of the Cross of Christ. The Cross of Christ was about love and our cross can lead us to love Him more and more as His Cross was about His never-ending love for us!
As we remember the 18th Anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on our country this Wednesday, I ask everyone to spend time in prayer for PEACE in our homes, our families, our schools, our communities, our country and our world! The violence continues here in our Country where we cannot go even a month or a week without violence and mass shootings. Let us pray deeply that, whatever the reasons are, that people – young or old – who feel the need to destroy human life – can get the help they need to not act out with such violence and hate in their hearts. Our leaders, our communities, parents, close friends or even acquaintances of these ill individuals, need to call out to the proper authorities if they see any signs of someone who is filled with rage or hate and shows any signs of violence towards groups or individuals. At the beginning of this year, Pope Francis, opened the Celebration of the 52nd World Day of Peace with the following words:
“Bringing peace is central to the mission of Christ’s disciples. That peace is offered to all those men and women who long for peace amid the tragedies and violence that mark human history. The “house” of which Jesus speaks is every family, community, country and continent, in all their diversity and history. It is first and foremost each individual person, without distinction or discrimination. But it is also our “common home”: the world in which God has placed us and which we are called to care for and cultivate.” Let us all do our part!
As I write this message today, Labor Day, for this weekend’s Bulletin, Hurricane Dorian is about to make landfall on the Bahamas and the southeastern states of the US – possibly Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas, if not more. By the time this is published, I pray that God will have spared us more destruction and devastation. Let us continue our prayers for the people, communities, businesses and homes of these areas.
God Bless you! Have a safe week. Fr. Jacek
