MESSAGE FROM FR. TAD

Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

September 5, 2021

Grandpa, well into his 80’s, was advised by his doctor to get a hear-ing aid. A week later he told the doctor that he could hear conversations in the next room. “Your relatives must be happy to know you can hear so much better,” the doctor said. “Oh I ain’t told ‘em.” replied Grandpa, “But I’ve changed my will three times already.” :) In today’s Gospel Jesus restores hearing to a deaf man. This miracle was a great blessing to the man, and it has a deeper meaning for us. Jesus opens our ears to God’s word, especially to his promise of eternal life, a promise God will not change! God speaks to us in Scripture, and God is not limited by space or time. When we pick up the Bible, it’s like dialing God’s number. When the Bible is read in Church, God is speaking to us. In the Gospel, Jesus says to us today what he said to Mark two thousand years ago. Jesus answers the most important questions that face us. What is life about? Is it worthwhile trying to do the right thing? Are we alone, or is there a God? Does God care? Hearing aids helped Grandpa listen to conversa-tions even in the next room. We need “spiritual hearing aids” to hear God’s word. Mary-Mother of Jesus heard God’s word and kept it. Let’s ask her for spiritual aid so we can do the same. Fr. Tad

THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH

“Each of us can discover in Joseph – the man who goes unnoticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence – an intercessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble. Saint Joseph reminds us that those who appear hidden or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation.” —Pope Francis

Twenty Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” J 2:5

What is more important – being rich in faith or rich in possessions? Society tells us that possessions are most important. God teaches a different lesson. When we are rich in faith, we keep God first and ex-perience true joy and peace. When we put posses-sions first, we soon realize we can never have enough and happiness is fleeting. When we put faith over possessions we truly realize it is better to give than receive.

The August 29nd collection was $7,363 with $3,907 from the collection basket, mail in and drop off at the rectory and $3,456 from Faith Direct.

Our adult choir is looking for new members. The choir sings at the Sunday 11:30am Mass. Rehearsal is one hour before Mass at 10:30am. Music experi-ence is not necessary. The choir begins again on September 11th. If you would like to share your joy of singing with others please contact our Director of Music, Klajdi Cerriku at 862-232-8390 or email him at [email protected].

“Your vision will become clear only when you can look into your own heart.” Carl Jung

Dear Young Friends, "Love is a one-way street. It always moves away from self in the direction of the other. Love is the ultimate gift of ourselves to others. When we stop giving, we stop loving, when we stop loving we stop growing, and unless we grow, we will never attain personal fulfillment; we will never open out to receive the life of God. It is through love we encounter God.” Saint Teresa of Calcutta in Where There is Love, There is God Service hours are often required for school, which can be a great experience! However, when we forget that truly serving comes from a deep love for God and others, it becomes a chore. As Catholics we are called to show others what God is like by loving and serving. The sacrament of Confirmation strengthens us for this work because it’s not always easy! As we celebrate her feast day, let us be reminded of Mother Teresa’s example and strive to serve God and others with self-less love! Need Opportunities to Share God’s Love Through Service? Visit the Youth Ministry webpage on our site at guardianangelchurch.org/youth-group to be connected to our service sign up. New options will be added throughout the year so check back regularly! 9/11 REMEMBERED Twenty years ago, the continuing TV coverage of the imploding twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York was unbearable for me, as were accounts of the crashes and destruction in Washington and the hills of Pennsylvania. The immense devastation of human life was incomprehensible. Visiting the site in New York some five years later reopened searing wounds, and overwhelmed me with immense sadness. An incursion on our soil, carefully planned and executed by foreign elements, had shattered my cherished sense of security, and provoked a frightening sense of God’s absence. How could my Catholic faith tradition enable me to endure this tragedy? I knew that neither vengeance nor sweeping animosity was an option for me. You have left us crushed . . . covered us with darkness. We are bowed down to the ground (Psalm 44:20, 26). O LORD of hosts, restore us; Let your face shine upon us (Psalm 80:4). The Psalmist cries a lament, expressing the mourning of the Israelite people, the chosen of God, who had regarded themselves as untouchable and above reproach, now hurled into mis-ery. The lament expresses a nation’s agony, dares to complain against their divine protector, may even own some complicity in the misery, and finally pleads with God for deliverance. In the midst of lamenting, the faith of Israel endured, as must ours. We are as vulnerable as they were to the violence and hatred that seem to encircle us. Our demand for a divine explanation goes unheeded. Yet we have learned of the self-sacrificing heroism of many, witnessing to the finest character of our nation and of our Christian heritage. Dying for one’s friends is a sacred theme in our story, epitomized in Jesus, our Savior, and extended through centuries in the grandest and noblest acts of men and women in all circumstances. In 2001 we came together as one nation under God, sharing the grief, the disillusionment, and the promise to rebuild. As today we lament our honored dead and wounded, shall we translate such agonizing emotion into a persistent pursuit of worldwide reconciliation and peace? —Rev. Andrew Nelson, Copyright © J. S.
