Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

O ur journey towards Easter has brought us today to this Fourth Sunday of Lent, which the Church traditionally calls Laetare Sunday, as its liturgy invites us to be glad and rejoice. The profound reason for this joy is explained in today’s Gospel reading in which Jesus heals a man blind from birth. What Our Lord asks the blind man is the central question in Christianity, a question that in the middle of this Lent is pro-posed to all of us once again: “Do you believe in the Son of Man?” (Jn 9:35). Commenting on this passage of the Gospel of John, Pope Benedict XVI once said that after being healed from blindness, the man “recognizes the sign worked by Jesus and … passes from the light of his eyes to the light of faith: ‘Lord, I believe!’ (Jn 9:38).” We celebrate this Sunday with joy, then, because we acknowledge that Jesus Christ has ap-peared on earth, has gone through his Passion, Death, and Res-urrection, has ascended into Heaven, and is sending his Holy Spirit to us, so that we may not be blind anymore: He wants us to see his presence in our life and know the love that the Father has for each one of us; He wants to give us eyes of faith. “It should be noted – Pope Benedict continued – that as a simple and sincere person [the man born blind] gradually com-pletes the journey of faith. In the beginning he thinks of Jesus as a ‘man’ among others, then he considers him a ‘prophet’ and finally his eyes are opened and he proclaims him ‘Lord’. In opposition to the faith of the healed blind man is the hardening of the hearts of the Pharisees who do not want to accept the miracle because they refuse to receive Jesus as the Messiah. Instead the crowd pauses to discuss the event and continues to be distant and indifferent. Even the blind man’s parents are overcome by the fear of what others might think.” One of the earliest baptismal catecheses, the story of the healing of the man born blind perfectly describes the passing from darkness into light – from death into life – that is signified by the sacrament of Baptism and the celebration of Easter. We too are born “blind” because of the sin of Adam, but in the bap-tismal font we are enlightened by the grace of Christ. Humanity has been wounded by sin and destined to the darkness of death, but the light of Christ – that is the faith we receive in Baptism and we nourish with the Word of God and the Eucharist – makes present the newness of life that Christ himself promises to all who receive him as the true and only Savior. The question for us today is ultimately very simple: are we willing to acknowledge Christ as the true “light of the world” (Jn 8:12) and conform ourselves to him in order to be-come the “new man”, a person who wants to reach full com-munion with God by allowing his or her life to be enlightened by the mystery of Christ? Answering yes to this question will be like rekindling the light we received at our baptism, and will make us ready to accept it once again on the holy night of the Easter Vigil as we receive it anew from the fire that shines from the Paschal candle.

With my blessing, Fr. Paolo

MARCH26,2017 ARCHDIOCESEOFNEWARK2017LENTENREGULATIONS1. The days of both Fast and Abstinence during Lent

are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection. The other Fridays of Lent are days of Abstinence.

On a day of Fast, only one (1) full meal is permitted, and two (2) smaller meals, which if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of Fast & Abstinence “substantially”, or as a whole, is a serious obligation. 3. The Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, are designated as days of penance, but each individual may substitute for the traditional abstinence from meat some other practice of voluntary self-denial as penance. 4. The time for fulfilling the Paschal Precept (Easter Duty*) extends from the First Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017. *Canon 920, 1. All the faithful, after they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion as least once a year.
