Mk 5:21–43 or 5:21–24, 35b–43Michelangeloʼs statue The Pietà, finished before he

turned twenty–four, expresses a theme Italians didnʼtenjoy seeing in art: death. Even worse, it recalls the tor-turous death of a crucified son held by his mourningmother. The image is horrific.

In his approach, Michelangelo is revolutionary. Ratherthan directly representing death, his statue is a meditationon it. Instead of showing the Virgin in the moment of ex-treme anguish, the normal strategy to achieve pity in theonlooker, the master decides to show Mary in humble ac-ceptance of this heart-wrenching moment.

She doesnʼt fight or run from the pain in rebelliousscreams. Her teeth arenʼt clenched, her brow is unwrin-kled, and her eyes arenʼt filled with tears imploring upwardseeking to understand the illogical. She merely sits in thepainful moment embracing the Son and abandoning hersorrow to the Father who permitted it.

Her hands reveal her attitude. One holds her Son underhis arm firmly. She pulls him to her, sustaining the weightof the mystery. She absorbs the moment, fleeing not. Re-maining in the pain, she endures the cost of our redemp-tion, expressing her fiat again, in silence: Let it be done tome according to your word.

The other hand tilts toward us, open. She is letting go,giving over! She knows this Child in her arms was neveronly hers, but everyoneʼs. Weʼre invited to grasp her openhand, join her pain, and do our part to take up our owncross and follow him.

CHRISTIAN LIFE PROGRAM or CLP A Christian Life Program or CLP will be conducted by the Couples for Christ (CFC) starting Sunday, July 15, 2018. Faith Formation Office is accepting Registrations for classes in September.

Registration takes place in the Rectory Office BY AP-POINTMENT ONLY. To set-up an appointment please call Mrs. Gallo at 718-335-2626 ext 13.

For your convenience we will have Faith Formation registra-tion on Sunday July 1st from 9:30 a.m - 1:00 p.m. at the Rectory Office and on Monday July 2nd from 6:00 p.m. —7:30 p.m. No appointment will be necessary to register on these two dates. Please make every effort to come in on any of these two days to register your child(ren) for classes.
