Things to Think About...

Very often I come across an article I wish all the people of the parish would have an opportunity to read. In this current article the Pope said “Old age is not a disease, it’s a privilege.” Continuation from last week “In fact, the Vatican conference, "The Richness of Many Years of Life," spent almost as much time discussing the gifts older Catholics bring to the church as it did talk about their special needs. The conference discussion, the pope said, cannot be an "isolated initiative" but must continue at the national, diocesan and parish levels. The church, he said, is supposed to be the place "where the different generations are called to share God's loving plan. “Just a few days before the feast of the Presentation of the Lord Feb. 2, Pope Francis pointed to the story of the elderly Simeon and Anna who are in the Temple, take the 40-day-old Jesus into their arms, recognize him as the Messiah and "proclaim the revolution of tenderness. “One message of that story is that the good news of salvation in Christ is meant for all people of all ages, he said. "So, I ask you, spare no effort in proclaiming the Gospel to grandparents and the elderly. Go out to meet them with a smile on your face and the Gospel in your hands. Leave your parishes and go seek out the elderly who live alone." While aging is not a disease, "solitude can be an illness," he said. "But with charity, closeness and spiritual comfort, we can cure it ."Pope Francis also asked pastors to keep in mind that while many parents today do not have the religious formation, education or drive to teach their children the Catholic faith, many grandparents do. "They are an indispensable link in educating littles ones and young people in the faith." The elderly, he said, "are not only people we are called to assist and to protect in order to safeguard their lives, but they can be protagonists of evangelization, privileged witnesses of God's faithful love." On a personal note, I want to stress to our grandparents that they pray for their grandchildren each by name, and I strongly believe that your good example will bear spiritual fruit. Blessings, Father Brian

2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal

Stepping Forward in Faith: Grace in Action

Please watch your mailbox for a letter from Bishop Checchio coming to you this week announcing the 2020 Bishop’s Annual Appeal. The campaign will again be conducted during Lent and our parish can earn a rebate of 50% of the amount collected over goal.

Through your support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal you help those in our diocese whose needs are the greatest—the poor, the homeless, and those struggling with illness or grief. Among other needed pastoral ministries, your gift also supports the formation of seminarians and enhances the work of campus ministry through the Catholic Center at Rutgers University. The many pastoral, educational and charitable ministries of the Diocese of Metuchen would not be possible without a generous contribution from every household. Please be as generous as your means allow.

ON MONDAY FEBRUARY 17TH THE PARISH OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED.

Our Parish Prayers, Info and Needs

Parish Prayer Book of Intentions:

In our Parish Prayer Book, we pray for the sick, needy, struggling, suffering, etc. Every intention in our hearts! No intention is too big or too small for prayer! St. Paul reminds us:

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and y o u r m i n d s i n C h r i s t J e s u s . ” Philippians 4:6-7

O Lord, be present with all those who serve our country. Comfort their spirits with your divine presence. Keep them close to You and grant them strength, wisdom and grace. LCdr Douglas Stahl, Navy Spc. A. J. Anderle, Army If you have a family member, relative, or friend in the military, especially overseas, or in a dangerous assignment, please let us know so we can request the prayers of our parish family. February 16, 2020 - 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20

The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Attending Mass on Sunday and then gossiping about a fellow parishioner on the parking lot is an example of a modern day Pharisee.

We are pleased to announce that we will be having Taizé Prayer here at Blessed Sacrament during the season of Lent. Please join us!

Taizé Prayer is a distinctive style of meditative prayer developed by an ecumenical community of Catholic and Protestant monks in rural France. This quiet, moving reflective prayer combines elements of the Church's traditional Liturgy of the Hours with elements of contemplative meditation. A typical Taizé prayer service incorporates periods of silence with meditative readings from Scripture, prayers of praise and intercession, and the frequent repetition of simple, contemporary chants based on the Psalms or other parts of Scripture. Short songs or chants, repeated over and over, create a meditative environment and express basic realities of faith which can be easily grasped by the mind and the heart. The result is to gradually move prayer from the head to the heart. Participants gather their prayers together and present a candle at the foot of the cross.

Vocations Traveling Chalice Program

The Vocations Traveling Chalice Program is one way our parish can pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We believe that when families pray for future priests, brother and sisters, God listens. More than that, God may plant a vocations seed in the very family doing the praying.

Please consider being a part of this very important ministry. We are in need of volunteers for the month of February. Sign up is in the narthex and if you have any questions you may contact Ginny or Jim Brogan at 732-356-6466 or via email at [email protected].
