The Presepio at St. Paul’s

This year, our parish is happy to again celebrate Christmas with the display of a magnificent prescepio, or nativity creche. It’s a tradition from Italy. It was last shown here in 2013. We thank parishioners Olimpio and Luigi Trombetta for sharing it with us.

The brothers remember, as children growing up in the Bronx, how each Christmas their father and grandfather would put together the beautiful, large scene portraying the incarnation and birth of Christ. It was the custom in the region of southern Italy that included their home province of Avellino to have such nativity creches in the homes and in the local churches as well.

The distinguishing feature of a presepio is the elaborate diorama that springs to life around its centerpiece: the manger where Christ was born. It’s a vast rustic landscape of mountains and grottos, and a village filled with people. You’ll see figurines of herdsman, farmers, tradespeople, and folks of all kinds going about their business. There are musicians, and angels, and even the Three Kings with their retinue making their way into town. And animals — lambs and chickens, a mother sow nursing her young, a rabbit hiding behind a young girl!

It’s a busy, bustling scene. Not a “silent night” at all. And there’s a reason for this, Luigi says. The presence of this multitude, people of all kinds, is meant to show we ALL belong here, at the place where Christ was born. These figures represent us — and not just us, but every person in the world and of all times in history.

Are You “SURE” You’re a Registered Parishioner? Many times we meet people at church who attend mass, take part in events, or perhaps even have received their sacraments here. We’re so very glad you’re with us and part of our community. But that alone does not make you a parishioner. To be a member of the parish you have to REGISTER. Registering is very easy. You can register online at spasaparish.org or at the parish office. It only takes a few minutes. Everyone over the age of 18 is encouraged to register. Even if you’re an adult who received all your sacraments here as a child and still attend mass here, you need to register. Why register? First and foremost, it’s very important to register so we can serve your needs when, for example, you need a sponsor certification letter for Baptism or Confirmation. Also, to receive an acknowledgment of your donations for your income tax filing, you need to be registered so we have an official record of your giving over the year. So, please join us officially and register with the parish so we can meet all your needs now and in the future!

To have a Mass offered for a birthday, anniversary, or special need is appropriate, beneficial, and appreciated. You can find out what masses are availa-ble and schedule them online at SPASAMASS.ORG or call the office, 845-268-4464.

LONGEST MARRIED COUPLE SEARCH WORLD MARRIAGE DAY | FEB. 14, 2021

The search begins for the Longest Married Couple in the Archdiocese of New York! To enter, couples must be sacramentally married for a minimum of 65 years and reside in the Archdiocese of New York. For further information or to submit an entry, contact Kathleen Crayne at the Family Life Office at Kathleen.crayne @archny.org (preferred method) or call 646-794-3182. The deadline for entries is Jan. 17, 2021.

Continued from page 3

We’ve all been called by God to be present at the birth of His Son, Jesus — to witness to His coming, to worship and adore, and to rejoice in His great Love.

And as we contemplate the presepio before us and marvel how the Eternal Creator of the earth and sky entered into time and our world as a little baby, it’s as if, in a way, we are there with the shepherds and the people who were eyewitnesses to the miraculous event over 2,000 years ago.

There are over 100 figures in this nativity creche, collected over the years by Luigi and Olimpio. The scenic background is built on a structure of boxes, covered over by paper mâché formed into the shape of rocks and cliffs. Real branches, sawdust, and sand help create the landscape.

You can find an excellent video on Olimpio’s YouTube site that uses time-lapse photography to show how they built the creche. It will also take you on a joyful tour so you can see all the wonders of this village close up. Google “Olimpio Trombetta, nativity, 2013,” and it will come up. It’s less than 5 minutes long.

This is the first time the presepio has been set up in our parish since the merger of St. Paul and St. Ann. So be sure to make a visit, and please bring the children! It’s displayed in the reconciliation room. But be quick. It will be taken down at the end of the Christmas season, so there are only a few days left to see it. Photos by Nancy Conroy

OUR NEW YEAR’S PRAYER FOR OUR PARISH

A lmighty God, our parish is composed of many people. We all help make it what it is. It will be holy

if we are holy. It will be prayerful if we are prayerful.

It will be friendly if we are. It will do great work if we work. It will make generous gi s to many causes if we are generous givers. It will bring other people into its worship if we invite and bring them.

It will be a parish family of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy if we — who make it what it is — are filled with these qualities.

As we begin this new year, bless our journey, Lord, and help us dedicate ourselves to the task of being all the things that You want our parish of St. Paul and St. Ann’s to be. Bless our journey so we might follow Jesus and build the Church for Your glory. Amen

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

DDeacon Luke Conroy

F or a number of years now my wife, Nancy, and I have been facilitators in

the RCIA (Rite of Chris an Ini a on for Adults) program at St. Paul and St. Ann’s parish. This program provides an oppor-tunity for individuals who, somehow, in some way, have seen a “star” on the hori-zon of their lives and, in following this star, find themselves being led to — of all things — the Catholic Church!

Nancy and I are forever amazed to meet such individuals who, approaching the Church from all direc ons and walks of life, seem to be asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw His star at its rising and have come to do Him homage.”

Our society and culture have become so secularized, that to meet someone seek-ing something beyond the worship of self-accomplishment, technology, and accumula on of material possessions, is truly amazing.

Perhaps is it not in the night sky, but deep within the hearts of men and women, where a “Star” rises that will not genuflect to the false gods of our me — a beacon of light that calls our a en on to something far, far be er. It is an invita on to the Way, the Truth, the Life — an invita on that requires our RSVP.

Pope emeritus Benedict XVI in his book: Jesus of Nazareth: The Infancy Narra ves, writes, “. . . the wise men from the east are a new beginning. They represent the journeying of humanity toward Christ. They ini ate a procession that con nues throughout history. Not only do they represent the people who have found the way to Christ: they represent the inner aspira ons of the human spirit, the dynamism of religions and human reason toward him.” (pg. 97)

I have experienced this in my own life. Although I was raised always knowing the story of the Christ Child, immaturity and the desire to be the CEO of my own life led me away from the Church and its message. And yet, there was always inner aspira ons — or a Star, if you will — orien ng me to another place that I needed to be. Finally surrendering to the call to follow that Star, I found myself se ng out on a pilgrimage.

“A pilgrimage is a journey undertaken in the light of a story. A great event has happened; the pilgrim hears the report and goes in search of the evidence aspiring to be an eyewitness. The pilgrim seeks not only to confirm the experience of others firsthand but to be changed by the experience.” *

How true! As our own pilgrimage brings us closer to the Star, we no longer want second-hand accounts but strongly desire to become “eyewitnesses.” We allow ourselves to be changed by the experience because we’ve come to understand our need to be transformed.

Approaching the Star, bringing the gi s of our lives to the newborn king, is the goal of the RCIA and of each of us who have been anointed through the sacrament of Bap sm.

“Pilgrims o en make the journey in company, but each must be changed individually; they must see for themselves, each with his or her eyes. And as they return to ordinary life the pilgrims must tell others what they saw, recas ng the story in their own terms.”*

In the Church or out — we are all on pilgrimage, we are all Magi.

“To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek Him, the greatest adventure; to find Him, the greatest achievement.”

— St. Augus ne
