A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY

by Rev. William J. Reilly Most Holy Name Catholic Church, Garfield, NJ

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 31, 2021

“Then they came to Capernaum, and on the Sab-bath Jesus entered the synagogue and taught. The people were astonished at his teaching, for he taught as one having authority and not as the scribes... All were amazed and asked one anoth-er: ‘What is this? A new teaching with authority. He commands even the unclean spirits and they obey him.’ His fame spread everywhere through-out the whole region of Galilee.” Mark’s gospel finds Jesus in Capernaum, a town on the northern edge of the sea of Galilee. To-day the focus is on the teaching role of Jesus. Last week we had the summary message, ‘The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.’ His message is heard, and the people respond. The same authority is found in the church’s teaching today. We are not to be cafeteria Christians, choosing to follow this point, but rejecting what doesn’t seem to please US, or challenges my way of life. May we embrace the teaching role of the church to direct our Christian lives in matters of faith and morals.

Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Mk 6:30-34

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20 Moses explains to the people that a prophet will come from among them, and that they should listen to this prophet’s words, for God has told him of this prophet. God also tells Moses that anyone who pretends to speak in his words, or speaks in the name of other gods shall die. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul tells the Corinthians how an unmarried man or woman is able to devote themselves fully to God without concern for the needs of a spouse. Paul explains that God wants to help them promote good and devote them-selves more fully to God. Gospel: Mark 1:21-28 As Jesus was teaching, a man with an unclean spirit came to the synagogue and asked if Jesus had come to destroy them. Jesus ordered the spirit out of the man, who shrieked violently as the spirit departed. The people were amazed at the authority he had over the spirit.

On February 2, the Church cele-brates the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord which occurs forty days after the birth of Jesus. The Presen-tation of Jesus at the Temple is an early episode in the life of Jesus, de-scribing his presentation at the Tem-ple in Jerusalem in order to officially

induct him into Judaism, that is celebrated by many Christian Churches on the holiday of Candlemas.

The Feast of St. Blaise, Wednesday, February 3, 2021

He is venerated as the patron saint of suf-ferers from throat diseases and of wool combers and as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers. According to tradition, Blaise was

of noble birth and, after being educated in the Christian faith, was made bishop of Sebastia. On the weekend of February 6 & 7 at all Masses, a general blessing will be given. Individual blessing of throats is suspended this year.

The Remarkable Generosity of our Parishioners!

I am very happy and ex-tremely proud to share the fol-lowing: 1) During this past Christmas

Season, large baskets of food and gifts were distrib-uted to eighteen local families needy of help.

2) Forty-one children received a $25.00 gift card for Christmas.

3) Two very lucky children received the gift of a min-iature Hess truck.

What wonderful news! It was all done because of the generosity of YOU, the parishioners of St. James! A special THANKS to the parishioners of the St. Vincent DePaul Society of our parish for the time and effort to coordinate the said distributions. Fr. Marc
