FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

OUR BLESSED “MAMMA” A couple of years ago I celebrated a wedding out in California for some parishioners that I knew. I stayed at a parish out there in Menlo Park-the Church of the Nativity. During the

week I spent there, I met a wonderful priest by the name of Father Clement Davenport who the was about 88 years old. Father Davenport was a real “character” as they say. He was known as “Father Lucky.” The nick-name was given to the priest during the Korean War in which he served as a chaplain. It seems that Father escaped certain deaths many times during the course of that conflict and so the nickname. The priest told me that he was kept very busy during the Korean War and then later on in Vietnam where at times, he had to say 9 masses on a Sunday. Father related that when a soldier was injured in combat, oftentimes he would cry out “Mama, Mama.” He said the injured boys would always call out for their mothers and never their fathers. It was just their first instinct. And the priest concluded the story this way. He said, “In this world that is often morally and spiritually dying, all of us too need Our Blessed Mother and should pray to her by saying, Mama, Mama.” Yes, we certainly need the help of Our Blessed Mother Mary and we should be in the habit of calling upon her name. We all have an earthly mother of course; but we also have a spiritual mother in heaven and that is Mary! This week on August 15th, we celebrate a wonderful Marian Feast-The Assumption. On this day, we remember that after the course of her earthly life Mary was taken body and soul into heaven. The Blessed Virgin Mary as the Church teaches was perfectly pure and sinless. Thus it was that the corruption of the grave could never touch her physical body. She was elevated to the heights of heaven immedi-ately. The Feast of the Assumption invites us to reflect a bit upon the life of Mary. Like all of us in this life, she certainly had her share of joys but also many sorrows. Yet through it all, she was perfectly faithful to the will of God. You and I are often a minus sign when it comes to fulfilling God’s plans but the Blessed Mother was the plus sign! At the Annunciation, Mary told the angel, “I am the servant of the Lord.” She totally and completely fulfilled those words and renewed them again as she stood underneath the cross of Jesus on Calvary and shared the anguish of her Son on Good Friday. Therefore, the Blessed Virgin Mary is a model and example for all of us in living the Christian life. And certainly that is a tall order for us at times. One of the titles given to Our Lady in the litany is “Mother of Mercy.” Certainly Mary is merciful and compassionate to anyone of us who struggles to be good. There is a story told of the Lord who complained one time to Saint Peter about all the souls who were coming into heaven. The Lord said, ”How come all these people are getting up here?” And Saint Peter responded, “Don’t blame me, Lord! Every time I close a door, your mother opens a window!” Well, I am not too proud to climb through a window if it means getting into heaven! Like any good mother, Mary is concerned about her children and desires that we join her in heavenly joy and happiness. What mother does not want the best for her children? May the name of Mary always be on our lips and in our thoughts for she is our loving “Mama!” Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
