Dear Parishioners and Friends of Saint Teresa Church,
This Friday at 11am, our Episcopal Vicar and former pastor Bishop John O'Hara will confer the Sacrament of Confirmation on 61 young adults of our parish. Their names are printed inside this bulletin today so that you may pray for them. The middle name you see is the chosen Confirmation name - generally, of a saint whose example and qualities they wish to imitate. Please pray for them to have lives that are healthy, happy, and holy. And remember and talk about the day when you received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Say a prayer today for your sponsor, and your parents, and ask yourself how often or how well you have been using the seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit. Everybody needs practice. Use it or lose it may apply! Always ask for the Holy Spirit to help you with Wisdom, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Understanding, Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
As is our admirable custom, adults and players in our parish's Youth Activities Association begin each season together with a Mass in church. This weekend our basketball coaches, players and families will attend our Saturday 4pm Mass. The play-ers will be in uniform, and then go over to the gym for a pep rally and party. Sportsmanship, character, self-discipline, learning to win graciously and lose with class: these are among the goals and gifts that volunteer coaches of YAA baseball, basketball and soccer offer to their players and families. My special thanks to Mr. John Tuohy for continuing his years of leadership, patience and good judgment. Our parish needs many excellent adults to make good things possible for youth. Let us know if and when you are ready and able to serve God and God’s people as a coach, as a religion teacher in CCD, or as a Scout leader.
I am thinking of Scouting because of last Sunday's very enjoyable Troop 37 Pancake Breakfast and Raffle in Conran Hall. Congratulations to Mrs. EJ LaGanga, other Scout leaders and parents, and thank you to everyone who came to enjoy good food and fellowship. There was an amazing hunger for those pancakes, and for the prizes too. More than 425 people had breakfast, from 8am to after the 12:30 Mass! Proceeds will help to fund activities and equipment for our very effective Scouting program.
As Church people, we learn to share with others and help them in their needs. Today we welcome dedicated parents to sell chances outside church for the programs of the Seton Foundation for Learning - a beautiful Staten Island initiative enabling Catholic education for children with learning disabilities. We are happy to see them each year and show our support for Seton.
Also each year, our parish supports the great work of Project Hospitality by taking a table at the Poor People's Dinner - a soup and bread supper - on the Monday before Thanksgiving, 6pm at the Hilton Garden Inn. The table we donate has ten seats. If you would like to attend with me, call me by Wednesday. Perhaps this is something you always wanted to go to. Or, reserve seats on your own at projecthospitality.org or by calling 718 448 1544. This is the 20th anniversary of the Poor People's Dinner, the largest interfaith event on Staten Island. This year the speakers will be Patti Ann and Conor McDonald, the wife and son of the late NYPD Officer Steven McDonald, who was such a great example of faith and forgiveness.
With Thanksgiving Day coming closer, let me invite you to put our beautiful 9am Thanksgiving Day Mass on your calendar. Yes, on November 23 we should say thanks in many ways—certainly to the cooks and the providers of the food we eat. But how right and just, and satisfying too, to begin our day as a family of faith with prayers of thanksgiving to God our Creator for all that He has made for us - and to do so with the spiritual feast of Holy Communion. Special day, one special Mass at 9am.
Because we all want to do something generous to express our gratitude and share our good fortune with others, let me recommend for your Thanksgiving generosity the second collection at next Sunday’s Masses. Cardinal Dolan explains: For a century, Catholic Charities has been serving New Yorkers in need by providing a range of services that provide help and create hope for the most vulnerable among us, Catholics and non-Catholics alike. As part of this Catholic Charities centennial year, I am pleased that we are inaugurating the Catholic Charities Campaign for Charity and Justice collection in our parishes. This is not another collection, but rather a transition from our usual annual Catholic Campaign for Human Development collection. In consultation with the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, we are making this change in order to better assist our parishes and local community groups with their charitable and social ministries. I continue to be grateful for your outreach to the neediest in our neighborhoods. This collection will occur on the weekend before Thanksgiving, November 18 and 19, 2017.
Many of you are regular contributors to Sister Margaret Mary's Food Pantry, with donations of food and money received by volunteers in the back of church on the first Sunday of every month. Please know how important your charity is to people who cannot provide for themselves. Last week I had a conversation with a homeless man whose face was lighting up as he told me about his invitation to a Thanksgiving meal in a restaurant. No one could be anticipating their feast more than him.
Asking for the Holy Spirit to guide each of us, our families, our parish, and our country, I am,
Yours in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Msgr. William Belford

LETTER FROM CARDINAL DOLAN TO MRS. ANNA SIMIONE, PRINCIPAL OF SAINT TERESA SCHOOL + October 27, 2017
Dear Mrs. Simione,
Catholic schools must prepare their students for two desti-nations: college and heaven. While all of our schools are faithful to passing on the faith to the children entrusted to our care, St. Teresa School stands out among its peers as a bastion for student performance and growth in achievement. And so, I am pleased to congratulate you on earning the 2017 award for most academic growth on the 2016-2017 Math state exams in the Staten Island Region. Every child is special and unique, but all are able to learn. The best educators meet students where they are on the learning spectrum, while displaying patience and compassion to support their individual skills and needs. St. Teresa School is clearly com-mitted to this approach and, therefore, deserves this recognition for fulfilling a chief tenant of Catholic education. Your school community, I trust, takes pride in this award, which was earned through hard work, collaboration, and a dedica-tion to excellence. With prayerful best wishes, I remain,
Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan
Archbishop of New York
The Cardinal’s crystal glass award given to St. Teresa School for academic achievement in Math is now on display
in the school lobby.
