FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 4:8-12 Peter explains to the elders that his healing of a crip-ple was done in the name of Jesus Christ. He re-minds he elders that they crucified Jesus, but God rose him up so that all people could be saved in his name. Second Reading: I John 3:1-2 John expresses amazement at the fact that God al-lowed us to be called his children. Although we are unsure exactly what we will be after this life, we do know that we will see God as he is and be like him. Gospel: John 10:11-18 Jesus speaks of a shepherd working only for pay, with no real concern for the sheep being well cared for. But Jesus is our shepherd and would lay down his own life for all those in his flock. God loves him for his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of all God’s children.

The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone.

Reminders for those Becoming Sponsors It is a great honor and privilege to be a sponsor for Baptism or Confirmation. The role of a godparent is a sacred duty. You become the “other parent” in the ways of faith. That is why the Church requires sponsors to be practicing Catholics, 16 years of age or older, having received Confirmation, living a good Christian moral life. If a sponsor is married, that person must be in a valid Church marriage. Only one sponsor is required for Baptism and Confirmation. For Baptism, you may have two sponsors. If you have two sponsors for Baptism, one must be a male and the other a female. To be eligible to receive a sponsor certificate from the parish priests, the individual must be a current parishioner, and be known to the priest as being a practicing Catholic, attending Mass regularly. It is important for all individuals to be active members of their local Catholic communities. If you are in need of a sponsor certificate, please call the parish office and one of the priests will set up a meeting with you.

April 29, 2018 Paschaltide

Dear friends in the Lord, As you know, every year here in the Archdiocese of New York take up a special collection for the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. During the time of communist reign in many countries, practicing faith became illegal, church buildings were confiscated, and people were forced to hide and secretly share the truths of the Gospel. After decades of institution-al oppression and persecution, Catholics still strug-gle to rebuild not only their physical places of wor-ship, but also their church ministries and communi-ties. With your support of this collection, the Church is providing resources to these communities to breathe new life into the faith once again. For example, the nation of Albania is nestled north of Greece on the Adriatic Sea. This small country suf-fered greatly under communist rule. In the capital or Tirana, located in the middle of the country, the Church is continuing to restore not only its struc-tures, but also the spirituality of the faithful after years of oppression. In 1996, the congregation of sisters known as the Company of Mary Our Lady founded a kindergarten, the first Catholic school in the entire capital city. Since then, they have opened a school for grades 1-9 and a daily activity center for children. These sisters are now serving over 700 children daily from all different backgrounds, faiths, and ethnic groups. With your support of Church in Central and Eastern Europe, these sisters will be able to make critical repairs to their building to con-tinue their service. Your generosity helps them to continue teaching children and equips the congrega-tion to provide a space to build peaceful communi-ties. Be assured that your donations make a difference for those still struggling in the aftermath of com-munism so, please prayerfully consider how you can support this special collection for the Church in Cen-tral and Eastern Europe. Thank you for your help to restore the Church and build the future in Central and Eastern Europe. With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan Archbishop of New York
