WHILE WE’RE AT IT… June 12, 2016
Dear Friends,
Summer is coming and we all need to keep our minds occupied as we get some time away and some relaxation. Here are some tips for reading in this vacation season that will do some good for your soul and for your relationships: 1. Spiritual Life
-Abandonment to Divine Providence – Jean Pierre de Caussade. A classic work of spirituality that shows us how to trust in God absolutely, and put it all in his hands.
-The Imitation of Christ - Thomas a Kempis. Though it was written six hundred years ago, this one never loses its relevance
-Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic – Matthew Kelly. We can all be better disciples and if we were, we would change the world. It’s that simple.
2. Catholic History
-Bearing False Witness: Debunking Centuries of Anti-Catholic History – Rodney Stark. A Protestant scholar defends Catholicism.
-Five Anti-Catholic Myths – Gerard Verschuuren. How history is commonly distorted when dealing with slavery, the Crusades, the Inquistion, Galileo, and the Holocaust. Get the Catholic side of the story for once.
3. Pope Francis
-The Great Reformer: Francis and the Making of a Radical Pope – Austin Ivereigh. The best biography to date of our very different kind of pope.
4. Parish Life -Divine Renovation – Fr. James Mallon. A plan for parish renewal that we are trying to steal from as much as we can!
These should keep you busy over the summer – I know they will definitely keep me occupied. I promise there will be no quiz. Enjoy! God bless, Fr. Richard Gill

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: 2 Samuel 12:7-10, 13 Because God was displeased with the actions of David concerning Uriah's death in order to marry Bathsheba, God sent Nathan to reprimand David. Nathan reminds David that God anointed him King of Israel and victor over Saul. David realizes his sin against God, but Nathan continues to reveal to David that the child to be born to him shall die. Second Reading: Galatians 2:16, 19-21 Paul writes of the struggles between Gentiles and Jews who both now profess belief in Christ Jesus. Paul proclaims his life in Christ, working towards unity and faith in the Son of God. Gospel: Luke 7:36―8:3 While Jesus was dining at the home of a Pharisee, a woman of the city who was a sinner, came and anointed his feet with oil. Weeping, her tears fell upon Jesus' feet and she dried them with her hair. Because of the woman's respect and love, Jesus forgives her sins. This causes those present at the table to question who he is.

CHURCH PEWS AVAILABLE A number of the historic solid oak church
pews removed during the renovation of St. Lawrence are now available. They can be cut to 8', 6', or 4' sections and make great accent pieces for a home or porch. Made of solid oak, they embody long memories of the church's history and our worship there. For a donation of $1000 to the new Blessed Mother prayer grotto fund for the renovated church, one of these 1915 antiques can be yours. Call Lisa Delzio at the rectory if interested: 845-279-2021.
SUMMER MASSES Everyone looks forward to the coming of summertime and the opportunity to get away on vacation and hopefully everyone will get a
chance for at least a little time away from the world of work to rest. Remember though we always need to go weekly to worship God and not take a vacation from our love and devotion to the one who has created us and blessed us. We have Masses in Saturday evening at both parishes and Sunday evening at St. Lawrence (5:30 p.m.) to make it easier to attend on a busy weekend away. We have early Masses at St. Lawrence (8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m.) convenient for those who are traveling somewhere or going to an all day activity. We need to go to Mass even while away out of town, unless you are in a place so far from a Church it would be a serious burden. Wherever you go, you can check www.masstimes.org to find the nearest Catholic Church and its schedule. Set a good example for your family and kids by always attending Mass - it will teach them all about what our real priorities in life are. And how God has to always be at the center.
