October 21, 2018 The Twenty–Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time

This Weekend’s Scripture

First Reading: Isaiah 53:10-11 Isaiah speaks of how the Servant of God will have to give his life up for the sins of other people. Because of this suffering the Servant will receive eternal life for himself and all the people whose sins are forgiven be-cause of him. Second Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16 Jesus is considered to be the new high priest and me-diator between God and his people. Fortunately, Jesus has experienced the same temptations as other peo-ple, and so he has more tolerance of our weaknesses. Gospel: Mark 10:35-45 Two of the disciples ask Jesus that they be allowed to sit at his right and left side when he comes into his glo-ry. Jesus explains that they should not be concerned with their position. Instead they should concern them-selves with serving others just as Jesus was planning to serve many in giving his own life for their sins.

A Stewardship Thought . . .

“For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom

for many.” (MARK 10:45)

If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to “thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share”. This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.

Vote Expected on NJ Assisted Suicide Bill – Action Required!

On Monday, October 29, 2018, the New Jersey Gen-eral Assembly very likely will vote on the Aid in Dying for the Terminally Ill Act (A1504). The bill would allow physicians to prescribe drugs to end the lives of termi-nally ill individuals considered to have six months to live. The facts are clear - in California, in Vermont and in Oregon - states that have passed assisted suicide bills - insurance companies have denied individuals expensive healthcare coverage but offered them low cost drugs to end their life. In an era of cost control and managed care, patients with lingering illnesses may be branded as a financial liability for the insurance compa-ny, and decisions to encourage death could be driven by reducing costs. Please contact your state legislators and tell them that you oppose A1504. Go to the link below to log in and send your message:

News from the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Our Neighbors in Need Find Help Here.

SAVE THE DATE! We’ll be holding another glass painting fundraiser on 11/2. See our flyer in the bulle-tin for details.

Could you please help us by donating non-perishable food items and toiletries for our pantry? We gratefully accept all non-perishable food items and toiletries. Donations can be left in the church lobby after any mass. Presently we are very low on canned tuna & chicken, canned or packaged fruit, bottled or packaged gravy, oatmeal, salad dressings, mayonnaise, mus-tard, ketchup. We can also use paper products such as paper towels and toiletries such as bathroom tissue, feminine hygiene products, napkins.

In the name of Christ we are here to help, to serve, and to bring God’s love to those who are poor and suf-fering. No work of charity is foreign to our society. If you or someone you know is truly in need please con-tact us through the parish office. (732) 257-0077. Ex-perience has shown us that sometimes those who need help the most are the least likely to ask for it. If this is you please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.

Renew Small Group Sharing Groups are now being formed

The themes will be:

Longing for the Holy At Prayer with Mary

Want to deepen your appreciation of and devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary and her role in our lives and the life of the Church? By reflecting on Scripture, Cath-olic teaching, personal testimonies, and Marian pray-er—including the rosary— you can gain a renewed appreciation of Mary’s place in today’s world, where she, as always, points the way to Christ. Join us for “At Prayer with Mary.”

Perhaps you are looking to enrich your sense of the presence of God. A new series, Longing for the Holy, based on the gentle spiritual guidance and practical wisdom of best-selling author, Fr. Ronald Rolheiser, OMI, concerns the way we channel the deep longing at the core of our beings. By using Longing for the Ho-ly as a spiritual renewal resource you will: Consider how to actively and knowingly live in the presence of God and respond to the needs of God's people; Ex-plore different dimensions of contemporary spiritual life brought to life through the lives of saints and contem-porary people of faith; Reflect on the cultural challeng-es that keep up from realizing our true desire -- our longing for the holy.

Register forms for “Longing for the Holy” and “At Prayer with Mary” are available in the Church or on our parish website.

You are welcome to visit the website for Renew international at

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
