From the Desk of Father Jonathan What a wonderful Holy Week we celebrated to-gether this year. I can't thank you enough for your example of faith, love, and sacrifice as you accom-panied the Lord during these Holy Days.

Just as we lived forty days of Lenten penance, we now have an extended period of Easter joy. The Church liturgy gives us fifty days to reflect on the Resurrection of Our Lord. This includes our cele-bration today of Divine Mercy Sunday. Today at 3:30pm we will have a holy hour in the church to honor this wonderful devotion. Here below is a brief explanation of the origin of this Feast Day:

Mankind’s need for the message of Divine Mercy took on dire urgency in the 20th Century, when civilization began to experience an “eclipse of the sense of God” and, therefore to lose the under-standing of the sanctity and inherent dignity of hu-man life. In the 1930s, Jesus chose a humble Polish nun, St. Maria Faustina Kowalska, to re-ceive private revelations concerning Divine Mercy that were recorded in her Diary. Pope St. John Paul explains:

“This was precisely the time when those ideologies of evil, nazism and communism, were taking shape. Sister Faustina became the herald of the one message capable of off-setting the evil of those ideologies, that fact that God is mercy—the truth of the merciful Christ. And for this reason, when I was called to the See of Peter, I felt impelled to pass on those experiences of a fellow Pole that deserve a place in the treasury of the uni-versal Church.” ~ Pope Saint John Paul II, Memory and Identity (2005)

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD

A SEASON OF JOY “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of bread and to the prayers” (Acts 2:42). This first line of today’s first reading sets the tone as this fifty-day celebration of Easter opens before us. Today we listen to the teachings of three apostles—Luke, Peter, and John—who remind us that even though we have not seen Christ, we nonetheless are filled with joy as we place our belief in his saving death and resurrection. Each week during the Easter season we will gather as a community of faith to find strength and support from our God and from one another. Each week we will gather to break bread and offer the great prayer of thanksgiving, actions that will manifest the very presence of the risen Christ in our midst. Let us be open to the wonders of this season of joy.

RIFLETTIAMO SULLA PAROLA DI DIO Dopo la morte di Cristo, gli apostoli rimasero soli. Ebbero paura al punto di rinchiudersi per il timore delle persone malevoli. Avevano vissuto tre lunghi anni con il Maestro, ma non l’avevano capito, al punto che Cristo dovette rimproverarli seriamente (Lc 24,25). Non l’avevano capito perché il loro modo di pensare restava troppo terra terra. Vedendo Cristo impotente e senza coscienza sulla sua croce, essi avevano gettato tutt’intorno sguardi impauriti, dimenticando ciò che era stato detto loro: “Vi vedrò di nuovo, e il vostro cuore si rallegrerà e nessuno vi potrà togliere la vostra gioia” (Gv 16,22). Ed ancora: “Voi avrete tribolazione nel mondo, ma abbiate fiducia; io ho vinto il mondo!” (Gv 16,33). I discepoli si rallegrarono al vedere Cristo, furono rassicurati dalle sue parole: “Pace a voi! Ricevete lo Spirito Santo!”. Ma essi dovettero attendere la Pentecoste perché lo Spirito Santo venisse a purificare i loro spiriti e i loro cuori, a dare loro il coraggio di proclamare la gloria di Dio, di portare la buona novella agli stranieri e di infondere coraggio ai loro seguaci. Dio si è riavvicinato agli uomini ed essi si sono rimessi nelle sue mani, per mezzo di Cristo e dello Spirito Santo. Concedendo agli apostoli il potere di rimettere i peccati, Cristo ha detto loro: “Ricevete lo Spirito Santo; a chi rimetterete i peccati saranno rimessi e a chi non li rimetterete resteranno non rimessi” (Gv 20,22-23). Come Cristo ha fatto con gli apostoli, così il vescovo, imponendo le mani ai sacerdoti che vengono ordinati, trasmette oggi il potere dello Spirito Santo, che permette loro di dispensare i sacramenti e, attraverso di essi, di assolvere i peccati. Ogni sacramento, non solo evoca il ricordo di Cristo, ma è Cristo in persona, che agisce immediatamente per salvare l’uomo. Nel dispensare i sacramenti, la Chiesa si mette in un certo senso ai piedi della croce per portare la salvezza ai credenti. Come potrebbe quindi dimenticare la fonte dalla quale scaturiscono le grazie di salvezza che sgorgano dalle sue mani? Dio realizzerà il suo più grande desiderio, renderà l’uomo felice se egli lo vorrà, se risponderà “sì” al Padre che gli offre la gioia, a Cristo che gli porta la salvezza, allo Spirito Santo che gli serve da guida. Dio non impone il suo amore agli uomini. Egli attende che l’uomo stesso faccia un passo in avanti. Dio salva chi si apre a lui per mezzo della fede, della speranza e dell’amore. Dio si avvicina, e anche l’uomo deve avvicinarsi a lui. Allora Dio e l’uomo si incontrano sullo stesso cammino, in Cristo, nella sua Chiesa. Cristo non è solo uomo, né solo Dio. È Dio e uomo allo stesso tempo; grazie a questa duplice natura, egli è come un ponte teso tra l’umanità e Dio. Questo ponte sarebbe rimasto deserto - né gli uomini né Dio vi avrebbero messo piede - se la causa della discordia e della separazione - il peccato - non fosse stata soppressa. Il sacrificio offerto a Dio da Cristo ha cancellato le colpe passate, presenti e future. “Egli ha fatto questo una volta per tutte, offrendo se stesso” (Eb 7,27). Da allora gli uomini possono “per mezzo di lui accostarsi a Dio” fiduciosi del fatto che “egli resta sempre” (Eb 7,25). Così, per la sua natura prodigiosa e il suo sacrificio completo, Cristo è il solo Intercessore e Sacerdote Supremo. In Cristo, gli uomini ritornano al Padre. In Cristo il Padre rivela agli uomini l’amore che egli porta loro. È sempre più facile avvicinarsi a Dio prendendo la mano caritatevole che il Padre tende all’uomo per aiutarlo a seguire Cristo, nostro Redentore. Tale è il senso del salmo che evoca l’uomo miserabile il cui grido giunse fino agli orecchi del Signore, e che fu liberato dai suoi mali.

REFLEXIONEMOS LA PALABRA DE DIOS

TIEMPO DE ALEGRÍA “Acudían asiduamente a escuchar las enseñanzas de los apóstoles, vivían en comunión fraterna y se congregaban para orar en común y celebrar la fracción del pan” (Hechos 2:42). La primera línea de la primera lectura de hoy marca la pauta al comenzar esta celebración de Pascua de cincuenta días. Hoy escuchamos las enseñanzas de tres apóstoles –Lucas, Pedro y Juan– que nos recuerdan que, aunque no hayamos visto a Cristo, estamos llenos de alegría al depositar nuestra creencia en su muerte y resurrección salvadoras. Cada semana durante el tiempo de Pascua nos reuniremos como comunidad de fe para hallar fuerzas y apoyo de nuestro Dios y de los demás. Cada semana nos reuniremos para fraccionar el pan y dar gracias en oración, acciones que manifestarán la mismísima presencia del Cristo resucitado entre nosotros. Estemos abiertos a los milagros de este tiempo de alegría.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE El 20 de abril de 1906 los ojos de una imagen de la Dolorosa comenzaron a parpadear durante un lapso de 15 minutos en el colegio jesuita San Gabriel, en Quito, Ecuador. En 1995 en Cochabamba, Bolivia, donde una imagen del Divino rostro lagrimó sangre y después, una imagen de la Inmaculada hizo lo mismo. En el transcurso del siglo veinte, muchísimas imágenes de Cristo, María e incluso, el Espíritu Santo, lloraron lágrimas de agua, san-gre u óleo, emitieron aroma de rosa o mostraron alguna manifestación paranormal. La ciencia logró explicar algunos de estos fenóme-nos, pero en muchos casos no fue posible. Normalmente, la jerarquía eclesiástica prefiere no hacer declaraciones oficiales al respecto, por lo menos, no antes de mucho escrutinio. El apóstol san Juan recomienda examinar cada espíritu (1 Juan 4:1-3) y esto es lo que la Iglesia hace con estas manifestaciones sobrenaturales. Con investigacio-nes científicas, sociales y espirituales se examinan cuida-dosamente estas manifestaciones a fin de asegurar que provienen de Dios y no del diablo u otros orígenes. En fin, la mejor prueba de la veracidad de estos fenómenos es la conversión de los fieles.
