From the Desk of Father Jonathan
This week was the 25th anniversary of the publication of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, promulgated by Pope John Paul II on October 11, 1992. The Catechism is a presentation of the beliefs of the Catholic Church. It has universal teaching authority, meaning, if you want to know what the Catholic Church believes about anything related to faith and morals, all you have to do is open up the Catechism! This clarity of belief is one of the most important gifts we have as Catholics. This cannot be said for many other Christian ecclesial communities. For example, the Lutheran church in Africa may have very different beliefs than the Lutheran church in Germany or the United States. Our unity comes from the authority Jesus gave to Peter, our first pope. When John Paul II officially promulgated the Catechism, he did so with the authority of the See of Peter. He was confirming us in our faith. He was saying "this here, in these pages, in this book" you will find a summary of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Catechism doesn't take away anything from the Bible. The Catechism is a fuller explanation of what is already present in the Bible, and what the Lord has given to us through Tradition, that is, what the Church has passed down to us through the ages as Revelation. Have you read the Catechism? Do you have a copy in your home? If not, I recommend you get one. You can find them at major book stores or you can order one on-line. Just look up "The Universal Catechism of the Catholic Church". I think you will find it to be a wonderful source of knowledge and inspiration. It will help you mature in your faith. Pope John Paul II, pray for us!
God bless,
Father Jonathan

THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today’s first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us “RSVP” to God’s invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom.
