CHRIST, KING OF ALL
On this, the final Sunday of the liturgical
year, we celebrate the solemnity of Christ the
King. By concluding the year with this feast we
are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the
one and only king over all seasons, all peoples,
and all of creation.
At the end of time as we know it, Christ’s
work of restoring all things to unity and harmony
with their Creator God will be completed. This
Sunday, when we claim Christ as both our Shepherd
and our King, we recognize our own calling to
participate in Christ’s saving work by caring for those
whom Jesus calls “the least ones” (Matthew 25:45).

Dear Parishioners, We conclude another church year this week by celebrating the Solemnity of Christ the King. These days of so much division and polarization throughout the world are reminiscent of the year prior to and during World War I. As a response to the situation at that time, Pope Pius XI established the Feast of Christ the King to focus not only on the teachings of Christ but, also, to raise everyone’s thoughts to our heavenly and universal homeland. We still need to learn this lesson. Advent, the sacred season of expectation and patient waiting for Christ’s second coming, begins this coming Saturday. We will have the lighting of our Christmas tree and the other exterior decorations after the 5:00pm Mass. The significance of the event is that Christ is the light of the world and we want the lights around our property to proclaim to all who pass by that we, as a family of faith, profess Christ in an increasingly secular world. I must add at this time that the Administration of Maimonides Medical Center very generously gave our parish, among several Christian congregations, a gift of $1,000.00 to assist us with our lights and decorations. Our Deanery of seven parishes will sponsor an Advent Eucharistic Adoration with Evening Prayer on Thursday, December 14th, at 7:30pm in St. Bernadette Church. The 69th Street bus goes along 13th Avenue and stops across from the church at 82md Street. Parking is also available in the parish schoolyard on 82nd Street (enter from 14th Avenue). All are invited to take a few quiet moments to prepare spiritually for Christmas. The guest preacher will be Father Justin Cinnante, O. Carm. I hope you had a Happy Thanksgiving and that Advent will offer you some time of reflection and prayers.
Let’s pray for each other, Msgr. Kevin B. Noone
