Email: [email protected] FALSE PROPHETS, TRUE PROPHETS In Deuteronomy today we hear that God’s very words will ϐill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God’s mouth. In Mark’s Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God’s own voice, the Holy One of God. The whole history of our church is ϐilled with both true and false prophets. But in today’s Gospel we learn that Jesus’ fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn’t an authority because he was popular or famous. We also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God’s purposes. And today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the ofϐicial positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God’s very words ϐilling our mouths. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

  • Dear Parishioners, This week we will celebrate a feast and a saint that has a beautiful tradition associated with him. On Tuesday, February 2, we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Also known as Candlemas. This feast recalls how our Blessed Mother, Mary, in obedience to Jewish law, went to the Temple in Jerusalem both to be purified 40 days after the birth of Jesus, and to present him to God as his firstborn. Recall the words and example of Simeon, a righteous man who was found day and night in the Temple, awaiting the consolation of Israel with the coming of the Mesaiah. The words spoken by Simeon as Mary brings her son to the Lord is our words as well: “Lord, now you let your servant go in peace. Your word has been fulfilled. My own eyes have seen the salvation which you have prepared for your people.” Like Simeon, our own eyes have seen the works of the Lord. The mighty deeds he has done for us all. We have seen the works of God in our essential workers: doctors, nurses, EMT’s, fire fighters, police officers, sanitation workers, grocery store workers, truck drivers and teachers to name a few. Let us praise and thank God for them. Also, on Wednesday, Feb 3, we celebrate the Memorial of St Blasé, Bishop and Martyr. There is a legend that calls to mind how Blaise, taking two candles and making the sign of the cross loosed a bone that was stuck in the throat of a young boy. There is a beautiful tradition to bless throats on this day. However, because of the Corona Virus pandemic, the Diocese has asked that there be no individual blessing of throats. The priest at the masses will say a general blessing at the end of the masses with the intention of blessing the throats of those present. Reminder: If you would like to participate in the 33 day Consecration to St Joseph, please call the rectory and leave your name and number to purchase the book for the consecration. The cost of the book is $14.95. Checks can be made out to Our Lady of Angels and the deadline is Feb 25 to place your order.

Thanks for your support! Fr. Abels

puede ser escrito a “Our Lady of Angels”.

Fr. Abels
