IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FEBRUARY 10, 2019

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

I often get together with my friend Fr. Stewart who is pastor of Our Lady of Vic-tory/ St. Augustine in the Bronx and our conversations almost always deal with what we are reading lately. It caught me off guard when he said to me the other day that he was reading a book by Peter Kreeft, a well known Catholic Professor of Philosophy. I then said, “No way! I just bought four books by Kreeft which I recently started to read!” The first book is called Prayer for Beginners and what a helpful little book it is! Here is a little ex-cerpt from a chapter called, Motives: ten compelling reasons to pray.

1. Why pray? Because only prayer can save the world 2. There is an even better reason to pray than the fact that only prayer can save the

world. We must pray because God commands it. 3. But why did God command prayer? Whatever God does, he does for good reason. 4. We should pray because God’s honor deserves it, in fact de-

mands it. 5. Remembering the facts of death and heaven gives us an even

more pressing reason to learn to pray: We do not have an infi-nite amount of time

6. Prayer is delightful! 7. Prayer is the way to know God and this is Jesus’ definition of

eternal life, “This is eternal life; that they know thee, the only true God (Jn17:3).”

8. Prayer and its effect, knowing God, is the essential prerequisite for all religious teachers, catechists, evangelists and preachers.

9. Prayer is the only way to spiritual progress. 10. Prayer is necessary because without it we cannot attain the meaning of life, the end

and purpose of our existence.

Kreeft closes this little chapter with these wonderful words: Becoming saints is the meaning of life. It is why we exist. It is why God created us. It is the reason he banged out the Big Bang, and why he waited eighteen million years for human life to evolve and why he providentially provided this one perfect planet, and why he breathed his Spirit into the Adam he formed out of its dust, and why he pre-pared a chosen people, and sent prophets among them, and finally came down from heaven into a mother and a manger and a cross, and was forsaken by God so that we never be forsaken, and rose again and sent his Spirit to haunt our hearts-all this stu-pendous effort was for one end: to make saints, to make little Christs, to give his Son brothers and sisters. The whole universe is a saint-making machine. And prayer is the fuel that powers it.

IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY FEBRUARY 10, 2019

HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

February 10, 2019

“Woe is me, I am doomed! For I am a man of unclean lips, living among people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts! He touched my mouth…and said ‘See now, that this has touched your lips, your wick-edness is removed, your sin purged.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? Who will go for me?’ ‘Here I am, I said, send me.’”

The call of the prophet and the new vocation of the fishermen can be the image of the call that Jesus makes for us today. We need to respond to the invitation He graciously gives us, to be sent to announce His message. It is easy for us to make excuses, to hesitate, or even flee.

The ‘unclean lips’ of Isaiah were purified to prepare him for his role. Our own lips are un-clean when we use them to criticize, speak ill of others, or complain, or even use bad language. We can use the same tongue to pray, praise and show others His presence in our lives.

Peter speaks for us all as he says: ‘but at your command I will lower the nets.’ What a sur-prise, leading him to the humble confession ‘depart from me Lord for I am a sinful man.’ Jesus responds with the familiar phrase ‘Do not be afraid…from now on…they followed Him.’

May we identify with Isaiah, seeking what the Lord asks of us. May we leave our tangled nets, acknowledge the Lord’s call and forgiveness, and follow Him.

OFFICE OF THE CARDINAL 1011 FIRST AVENUE NEW YORK, NY 10022 Dear friends in the Lord:

As you know, every year we collect a special offering in our parishes known as the Peter’s Pence Collection. It is an opportunity for the Church around the world to stand in solidarity with those who suffer and are marginalized. Your generosity helps Pope Francis ease their suffering and show them the tender love of God.

For one example, in Iraq, many people still live a nightmare of war and violence. This has left many, especially many Christians, displaced, including young people in the midst of their studies. Without an educated population, it will be difficult for the country to gain stability. But, with our support given to the Peter’s Pence Col-lection, the Archdiocese of Erbil, in Iraqi Kurdi-stan, has received funding for ten scholarships for young displaced persons. With this help, the students will be able to complete their univer-sity education and move forward with the hope of rebuilding their country.

Please prayerfully consider a generous dona-tion to this special collection as an act of mercy and charity. Join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the most marginalized in our world. For more information about the collec-tion, please visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

With prayerful best wishes, I am, Faithfully in Christ, †TimothyMichaelCardinalDolan Archbishop of New York
