Kirby Parish Council Meetings Correction: The forthcoming Parish Council dates are 9th July and 3rd September all at 7.30pm Church Hall.

Soiree avec FlossieMany thanks from the Governors of Kirkby & Great Broughton School to all who supported our recent event : "Soiree avec Flossie". It was an evening of fun and music, with a wonderful French themed meal which everyone enjoyed enormously. The event was a sell-out with all 100 tickets sold. As a result the governors raised a fantastic £1,420.00 to help with the final payment for the recent improvements to the front of the school which are being enjoyed by parents and pupils alike. Thank- you everyone who came and/or donated.

Gardening Day Huge thanks to everyone, from both villages, who supported us on May 20th. It was good to see our Village hall used in such a spirit of friendly village cooperation. People were interested and very generous both in donating and helping. The scarecrows were a great advertisement! Thanks Sarah Grierson

ScarecrowsThanks to the workshop team of helpers and everyone who made and displayed their scarecrows on the Green, especially young folk. They have provided interest and amusement to villagers and visitors. A great job was done of advertising the Gardening event. We wonder what befell of ‘Doris’ the scarecrow who was stolen, hope she had a happy adventure! Better start thinking about what you will do next year ....... in case we do it again!

Local History GroupEnglish Heritage have confirmed that following our representations the stone trod above Kirkby Hill Road leading to the hills is to be listed as an ancient monument, congratulations to all involved (it is very rare for EH to list flat objects as opposed to buildings).A big thank you to all those involved in the recent historic buildings study weekend which was a great success- the results will be published at a public meeting on 30th September.

Kirkby and Great Broughton School As you may be aware the BBC have been filming a series of episodes of the TV programme ‘Hairy Bikers’ in the area. For one of the episodes, focussing on gourmet party food, the Bikers prepared gyozas, a kind of dumpling, and served them to some of the children from our school. The children had a fantastic time, thoroughly enjoyed sampling the gyozas, and received signed photographs of the Bikers. We look forward to seeing them on TV when the new series is shown next Spring.

The hard working and dedicated governors of Kirkby and Great Broughton school recently organised a very successful and enjoyable French evening. Entertainment was provided by the singer Flossie Maliaville and the delicious French supper was prepared by the governors themselves. The money raised has contributed towards the improvements to the area at the front of our school building.

All the children are excitedly anticipating the forthcoming Diamond Jubilee celebrations. During the last week of this half term they will be involved in lots of activities to celebrate this unique occasion including painting portraits of the Queen and designing their own crown jewels. On Friday 1st June they will come to school dressed as kings, queens or other members of the royal family. We will be having a Jubilee picnic lunch and sharing all we have done with parents during assembly. Four lucky children will be leading the parades during the village celebrations on Tuesday 5th June.

This month and next will be the usual busy, productive time for all of our school as we get ready for our 16 new starters and their families for September and prepare to say a fond farewell to our 12 Y6s. The current Reception children will be inviting the new children to join them for some games and activities. On 9th July, our new parents and new children are invited to join the school for lunch.

The whole school is looking forward to celebrating Sports Week beginning on Monday 25th

June. This year will be extra special as the theme will be ‘The Olympics’ and will start with an official opening ceremony! Athletics, tennis, cricket and football will be among the sports on offer to all of our children during that week. The PTA are organising an action packed Olympic activity day on the Saturday before Sports Week which promises to be lots of fun for everyone. They also hope to raise valuable funds for our school which will be gratefully received!

Tickets (£6.00) are now available for our popular "Tea on the Lawn" event which is on Sunday July 15th from 2.00 to 4.00 at Westfields, Kirkby. Time to dig out the summer frocks and hope for a better day than last year when we had a deluge!!

Diamond Jubilee Celebrations– Tuesday 5th June –

Join the celebrations planned in our two villages on this great day!

We start with a short village service in Church at 9.30am, followed by refreshments in the Church Hall. The afternoon’s events will be at the Sports Club and you can set up your gazebo (a prize for the best decorated) or rug and chairs from 11am.

There will be a parade of a decorated float from each village to the Sports Club, starting at 2pm; meet at Town Green, Great Broughton or Hill Road, Kirkby (by the Black Swan). Don’t forget to dress in red, white and blue; children are encouraged to design and make their own King’s or Queen’s crown and a prize will be given for the most creative design.

The fun starts at the Sports Club at 2.30pm; bring picnic food and drink – the BBQ will be lit for those bringing steaks or sausages, etc - and there will be a Pimms bar. We’ve planned an afternoon of games, fun, competitions and dancing and expect to finish at about 10pm.

Each child attending Kirkby and Great Broughton School will receive a Diamond Jubilee commemorative mug. Any other child up to the age of 11, living in either village, who would like a mug, or any one wishing to purchase a mug, should register their request at [email protected] as soon as possible.

We look forward to seeing you!
