To the people of God in Christ Jesus in Lafayette, Grace and peace to you. Right now in my personal devotions, I am reading through the Psalms. It is a great study and I am enjoying it and wishing I had done it before I did Psalms for Daily Office. I guess I will have to come back to Psalms another year to share some of what I have learned in deeper reflection. Learning never ends my friends. I have read through the Bible every year multiple times and I continue to learn and be in awe of the depth of relationship and wisdom and wit these people had. Their faith is instructive to ours. We are in an era where faith is necessary. We are in a time when courage is necessary. We can learn from the past. As our students prepare to return to school in whatever way they return, how are you returning to learning? I intend to offer an in person Bible Study on Sunday evenings beginning after school starts back. If you are interested, please let the office know. Shalom, Rev. Weekly Lunches for Lafayette Transitional Housing

Each Saturday, a team of volunteers from CUMC

prepare and deliver lunches filled with a

sandwich, chips and cookie to LTHC to feed

people facing homelessness. One week, CUMC

summer campers volunteered to make Saturday

lunch! These campers made up 75 sandwiches,

puppy chow, graham crackers with icing, chips

and a treat to be delivered to help feed the those

in need.

The Feed the People ministry

“REACHES OUT” to those in need

in our community as we show the

love of Christ by serving others. If

you would like to be involved in

our Feed the People ministry,

please contact Carol at

[email protected].

The year of 2020 has been filled with new experiences

and a lot of uncertainty.

What we can be certain about at CUMC is that

OUR CONGREGATION PERSEVERES!

Through this year so far you have continued to give faithfully to

the church and with your faithfulness we have been able to

continue helping our community through our ministries,

missions, and outreach. Here are a few of the many things we

have been doing to continue our mission of “Making disciples of

Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world”.

Early Learning Collects 2,000 Cans of Food!

Early Learning held a food drive for the CUMC Edgelea Backpack Program on Friday, June 26th. Campers collected the donations in the East parking lot and were so excited when people would

drive up with their donations. This food drive accomplished a few things.

1. We collected a lot of food for the kids of Edgelea experiencing food insecurity.

2. Ministries in our church came together helping each other for others.

3. We were able to teach our children the love you feel when you do good things for others!

CUMC Summer Campers are excited to help support the Edgelea Backpack Program mission to stock the shelves for the upcoming school year!

Thankfully Covid has not stopped some of our small groups from their Bible Study. The Women’s Bible Study has started meeting in the Sanctuary on Tuesdays. They still Zoom with the ladies who are not comfortable attending in person. And The Wesley Fellowship Sunday School class has begun meeting on Wednesday’s. As you can see we take all the precautions so that our church family remains safe and healthy.

The Henderson Mission Team Exemplifies “Being the Church” When long time church member, Jim Applegate, returned home after recovering from a fall he realized it had become difficult and dangerous to get in and out of his home. His daughter called the church for some advice/help. That is when Carol thought about our Henderson Mission Team. For the past 3 years our CUMC Henderson Mission team spent a week at Henderson Settlement in Frakes, KY doing work projects in one of the poorest areas of the Appalachian Mountains. Sadly, because of Covid

19 this couldn’t happen this year. However, this opened up a new opportunity for our team. They were able to get together and build a new front porch for Jim! Now Jim Applegate can safely sit on his front porch & enjoy his neighborhood. Jim was thrilled and humbled by his church coming together for him. Even in the midst of COVID God calls us to serve & love our neighbors ......and we can!

The Kids Kloset

During the past few months we were faced with the question, “How do we serve our local children in need of clothes if they can not come in and use our Kids Kloset”?

So, we sent out an online order form. For the month of June people were able to place their order online and come pick up the clothes outside delivered to their car.

On Sunday, June 28th, we welcomed 11 people into full membership at CUMC! Their membership class was a little different than most with COVID coming in at the middle and causing them to Zoom the rest of the way. If you are interested in membership at CUMC contact Carol Yarian. [email protected]

Learning, Sharing, & Caring

One of the activities for the summer camp kids was a cooking class. One day Miss Carrie taught the kids how to make cookies along with how to care for others. These yummy cookies were then

delivered to some of our church members so they know they are loved and that we are thinking of them and praying for them.

Our Friend

God is faithful: by whom you are called unto the fellowship of His Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

1 Corinthians 1:9

The Lord is always near us, We feel His guiding hand, At times when we are troubled, And things are hard to understand. ‘Tis then we know He’s near us, On Him we can rely, To help us make decisions As time goes passing by. No friend is always faithful Like our Lord in heaven above, He sends us all His blessing, He gives us wondrous love. If only we would listen, Let our conscience be our guide,

We’d know the path to travel, With our Savior by our side. He’s with us in the winter When days are dark and bleak, He’s with us in the summer On every day, all week. So let us all be thank ful For the goodnss He has done, For the friend who stands beside us, Our Lord, the Holy one. Maxine Lyga

Hunger Hike is an annual community fundraising event whose mission is to raise awareness and make a difference in the fight against hunger. So join our CUMC team to raise $500.00 and

let’s walk together to make a difference!!!!! Hunger Hike 2020 will kick off Sunday, September 13th with a week long challenge and then on Sunday, September 20th at 1 pm they will host a livestream event and 3K walk. CUMC Outreach Ministries is asking you to join us in the fight against hunger.. The proceeds from Hunger Hike support the work of three different agencies.

1. Lafayette Urban Ministry will use it to feed the homeless, stock the LUM Protein Food Pantry, and feed children in the after school and summer childcare programs.

2. Food Finders Food Bank, Inc. will use it to feed people impacted by COVID-19 here in Tippecanoe County.

3. St. Thomas Aquinas Haiti Ministry will use it to promote the hybrid seed and food storage programs, open a community store, and bring clean drinking water to the parish of Baudin.

So get a team of family, friends, co-workers and neighbors together, set a goal and just walk. Maybe 50 cents for every mile walked or how about $5.00 for every mile walking. If walking is not your thing, that’s fine, you can still support us through a donation and your prayers. If you would like to support Hunger Hike, go to www.christumchurch.org/giving and choose Hunger Hike 2020, or send a check with Hunger Hike 2020 in the memo line to the church office: 3610 S. 18th St., Lafayette, IN 47909 All donations will then be presented to Hunger Hike. Contact Carol Yarian | [email protected] if you would like a Hunger Hike form for colleting donations or for any questions.
