MIM PICK OF THE WEEK!Son de Madera From Veracruz Endowed with an enormous talent for musical arrangements and tradition research, Son de Madera represents Mexico’s current son jarocho move-ment. This movement is described by the Los Angeles Times as a “rhythmic style which arose centuries ago from the dramatic convergence of Span-ish, Indian and African elements. It’s characterized by the bright fl utter of the jarana, a small guitar; the sharp dance steps of the zapateado; the improvisations of the lead singer; and a high-pitched call-and-response chorus.” Son de Madera´s performances are sensuous, with an exquisite sense of musicianship. Great Playwright SeriesHarold Pinter – Strangers in the BedroomTheatre Artists StudioFriday & Saturday 7:30 pmSunday 2 pmThru September 4Two of Harold Pinter’s rarely staged one-act gems are being performed. As this year’s entrant in The Studio’s Great Playwright Series, Strangers in the Bedroom explores vastly different aspects of relationships. The Lover: Sarah and Richard have an excellent arrangement: She has her lover, he has his whore. At second glance, though, all is not as it appears. Often disturb-ing, frequently hilarious, THE LOVER sets the whole notion of marital relations on its head. Ashes to Ashes: Rebecca has a lot of secrets. Devlin is determined to un-cover them. Instead, he uncovers the truth in the age-old cliché - “be careful what you wish for.” The might have been, Can we tell which is which? Can Rebecca tell the difference as she sometimes reluctantly, sometimes boldly, answers questions about a past lover? Can life be this grotesquely bittersweet? And what of Devlin, Does his story, his reality, depend upon hers?

This ambidextrous farce features a play within a play that follows the onstage and back-stage antics of a fi fth-rate acting troupe touring in a new, horribly-written sex farce called Nothing On. Starting backstage at dress rehearsal, nothing seems to be going right, and with each production, there’s a new disaster that is more hilarious than the previous. Full of fl ubbed lines and false entrances you’ve got to see it.

by Joseph Gordon

Something is cooking at Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre as it prepares to close its 9th season with a deli-cious serving of the most divinely delectable family musical-comedy, Church Basement Ladies. Church Basement Ladies will begin perfor-mances on August 26 and continue through September 25. The church basement kitchen throughout much of America is often the heart and soul of any church. In Church Basement Ladies we meet the pastor, three main kitchen cooks and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation by prepar-ing and serving the food. The show follows these characters and their re-lationships as they organize the food and solve the problems of their rural Minnesota church. The women stave off potential disasters, have fun, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on the correct course. The Broadway Palm production of Church Basement Ladies is directed by co-creator Curt Wollan and cho-reographed by Brooke Robyn Dairman with musical direction by JR McAlex-ander. Russell A. Thompson designed the sets and Mary Atkinson the costumes. The talented cast includes Valley native Angela Dirksen, Kelly Karcher, Kay Francis, Jessica Unice and Edwin Hanson. It was adapted to the stage by Jim Stowell, Jessica Zuehlke (book) and Drew Jansen (music and lyrics) based on the novel Growing Up Lutheran by Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson. Director and co-creator Curt Wollan has always had a warm affection for Church Basement Ladies. He has said,

“My mother was a Church Basement Lady. When I was a boy, I remember hearing the laughter coming from the church kitchen of Lakeview Lutheran in Maplewood, Minnesota when she and her friends would come together to serve.” Curt has dedicated his work on Church Basement Ladies to the mem-ory of his mother, Lorraine, whose church kitchen legacy serves as an unlimited inspiration. His mother was one of those “Steel Magnolias” of the basement. You’ll find them in Catholic churches, Synagogues, Protestant churches, or any place where some-one has to do the unheralded work of making the coffee, heating the casseroles and dolloping the Jell-O. They are your grandmothers, your aunts and your mom and, according to Wollan, “It’s time to thank them and to find out just what that laughter was all about!” Joseph Gordon from the examiner.com recently spoke with Curt Wollan about his never-ending and emotion-ally satisfying journey with his Church Basement Ladies.

Q: Is this the first time you’re di-recting Church Basement Ladies?A: Oh, no! This is about the thirti-eth time for me. I have been with the show from its initial inception. Church Basement Ladies ran in our theater in Minneapolis, the Plymouth Playhouse, for over two and a half years and was followed by a sequel we wrote called Second Helping. The sequel was also quite a huge success and ran to a year and a half. We also wrote a holiday show, Away in the Basement, which did extremely well last year. The Christmas show was so popular that we had to double cast it, doing fourteen shows a week.

Q: Tell us what makes Church Base-ment Ladies a special favorite of audiences?A: Mostly women, from forty to what-ever, really enjoy the show. Men enjoy the show too because it reminds them of their moms, their aunts, women who devoted their spare time to the good of the church and their commu-nity. Its appeal comes from the recog-nition of the many under-appreciated women who give of themselves so unselfishly. It’s also about all the fun they have working together. Q: Your mother was an actual Church Basement Lady. What was that like growing up? A: It was a lot of fun. That was her country club. Those were all her friends. It was her social life. It all revolved around our little church in Maplewood, Minnesota. I remember as a little kid listening outside in the social hall to the women having so much fun, back in the kitchen, laugh-ing and goofing around. Those wonderful memories have stayed with me and were one of the main reasons we first looked at developing this show. It’s based on a series of books called The Lutheran Ladies written by Janet Martin and Suzann Nelson. The books have been so successful that Martin and Nelson try to publish a new one in the series each year. We based our musical Church Basement Ladies on the first novel Growing Up Lutheran. It took about five years to finally get it right before we opened it in the Plymouth Playhouse in Minneapolis. It became an instant hit. The musical just hit something within our audiences. Peo-

ple love to laugh at themselves. The thing we would hear most after the shows is how our characters remind-ed our audiences of their grandma or a favorite neighbor. People are always coming back and bringing friends. It’s really nice to see that we are enter-taining so many and that they are having such a memorable time. Q: What other shows have you staged for PEG?A: I did Honky Tonk Angels for them two years ago. I also have a home in Florida in Ft. Myers and I have worked with their theater there doing Church Basement Ladies as well. Q: Do you have any particular favorites among the CBL shows you have directed?A: I really do enjoy Part Two, Second Helping. It has a little more depth to it than Church Basement Ladies. In the first show, we are first learn-ing about the characters. Second Helping has a bit more meat to it (no pun intended). We are actually doing Part Two at Ft. Myers this year. I am guessing we will want to do it here in Mesa eventually as well. We are also working on a fourth version that we call A Mighty Fortress is Our Base-ment. There’s even a fifth one that is in development. It’s based on a true story. Our sound man at Plymouth Playhouse won an Emmy Award for a short that he filmed based on the history of his church in south west Minnesota. The documentary is about the last day of his church. His church had been sold to a museum because its membership had dwindled down so badly. The church decided to invite back everybody who had been a mem-

ber of the congregation for a big pot luck supper the day before it would be lifted off its foundation and carried down the road to the museum. Q: Do you have any shows that are still on your must do list?A: I have a show in mind that I would like to write about the service industry called How May I Help You? It would be more like a musical revue with a small cast doing sketches and songs about people who work in that industry. I really began thinking about it when that Fight Attendant went literally overboard on that Jet Blue flight. Q: What’s up next for you?A: I leave here right after the show opens and fly to Iowa to the Old Creamery Theatre to stage another production of Church Basement La-dies. Next, I will stage Second Help-ing in upstate New York in Auburn at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse. Then I fly back to Minneapolis to stage Away in the Basement at the Plymouth Playhouse. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share about the upcoming production?A: Yes, if customers call the Box Of-fice and mention “Church Basement Angels” when purchasing a full price ticket, $10.00 of the ticket price will be generously donated by the Broad-way Palm Dinner Theatre to Lu-theran Social Services. It’s good any

night except Saturday night, because Saturday night already has a special discounted price of $39.00. Lutheran Social Services holds a very special place in Curt’s heart; he was adopted through LSS in Minnesota. This mouthwatering musical comedy based on recipes, food, and change in the church is funny, heartwarming, and down to earth. It will bring back memories of many people that we have known from churches every-where. Adult ticket prices range from $45 to $49 and include a buffet meal, show and tax. Saturday evening special for dinner and show is only $39. Tickets for children 12 and under are $22. Show Only tickets are available for $28. Student rush tickets (show only) are $10 and available 30 minutes prior to curtain to currently enrolled high school and college students with a valid school ID. PERFORMANCE TIMES: Wednesday through Saturday Evenings: Dinner buffet begins at 5:30pm, show begins at 7:30pm. Wednesday or Thursday and Saturday or Sunday Matinees: Luncheon buffet begins at 11:45am, show begins at 1:15pm. Sunday Twilights: Dinner buffet begins at 5:30pm, show begins at 7pm. Nick@ Night

By Nick Connell THE DINNER PARTY at Scottsdale Desert Stages, Scottsdale

Neil Simon is loose again in Scottsdale with the Scottsdale Desert Stages production of THE DINNER PARTY. Now for those seeking a fanciful look at relationships and their emotional hang ups - this is just the ticket to a night of wit, comedy, setups, and of course laughs - courtesy of Mr. Simon and friends. The friends in this instance are all related (I won’t break the secret) through an invitation to attend a wonderful party created by a guest who makes an appearance at the party as well. But the rest of the evening is a pure set up to reveal the nature of men and women in their human condition - secrets and all. Led first by three men in shining colors, including Wade Moran as Claude Pichon, Jimmy Shoffman as Albert Donay, and Charlie LeSueur as Andre Bouville - they’re all divorcees. This com-mon thread opens the wounds of unresolved failures and makes for some interesting small talk and disclosures as the party begins. But as with every social setting mixed with booze - the men will be boys and the fun begins! Now add three more members to the party - all beautiful women led by Tammy Lindon - Dunn as Mariette Levieux, Jennifer White as Yvonne Fouchet, and Kandyce Hughes as Gabrielle Buonocelli - also all divorcees and you have surprises galore! The chemistry is red hot between the sexes in this fantasy farce wrapped with love and pain like a sweet martini. And here lies the good of the story - that maybe there is a thread of good be-tween men and women - we just need a witty playwright and a lovable cast to show us the way. The Dinner Party is a celebration you’ll laugh with and enjoy from every angle. Make sure you RSVP-ASAP! Tickets 480-483-1664 or www.DesertStages.org

GREASE at Valley Youth Theatre in Phoenix

There’s love in the air in downtown Phoenix as the new production of GREASE by Valley Youth Theatre is ‘Shakin’ up the town! Made famous by the movie with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, is a romantic look at adolescence in the 50’s mixed with high school bullies, teen angels, troublesome angst, and perfect for this cast loaded with musical talent! Everyone knows you have to have a Danny (played with true colors by Coo-per Hallstrom), a Sandy (played by the stunning Asijah Adolph), a Kenickie (played by the macho Logan Cummings), a Rizzo (played by the tough and sensitive Juliana Alabado), a Marty ( played by the charming Channing Cooper), a Johnny Casino (played by the exciting Brad Cashman), a Doody and Rodger (played by the funny duo of Branson Gates and Will Snyder), and a Teen Angel ( played by heartthrob Colin Ross). Throw in some powerful Pink Ladies, a group of bright Burger Palace Boys, mixed with an ensemble of voices ready to ‘Rock and Roll’- and you have “Greased Light-nin!” Bobb Cooper and his staff have taken us back to the Hand-Jive era in true fashion including radio DJ’s, over the top dance parties, hot bands, wild colors and hip costumes, fast cars and dangerous gangs - only to land us back to the heart of the story - being in love and “All Choked Up”. Grease is a fun ride full of great scenes and cool characters you’ll love to watch. You might even remember when….Tickets 602-253-8188 or www.VYT.com

Silver Screen Scoop!

By Joseph J. Airdo

Now that Andrew Garfield has been cast as Peter Parker in Sony’s “Spi-der-Man” reboot, the attention has turned to the character’s love inter-est, who, by the way, will not be Mary Jane Watson. Actresses rumored to be in the running include Teresa Palmer (“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”), Emma Roberts (“Twelve”), Imogen Poots (“Solitary Man”) and Lily Collins (“The Blind Side”).

In sequel news, Sylvester Stallone says that he has already “plotted out” the storyline for a follow-up to “The Expendables,” which will likely see a few new faces introduced to the cast of mercenaries while a few old faces depart, and the cast and crew of political thriller “Salt,” including star Angelina Jolie, are ready to go should a second chapter of their film be green lit.

Finally, “Iron Man” screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway have been hired to pen the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” reboot; “Ed Wood” scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski are set to write the stop-motion animation “Addams Family” reboot; and “Avatar’s” Sam Worthington will star as the titular vampire in “Dracu-la: Year Zero.”

‘Mao’s Last Dancer’, a documentary, drama, musical, and, a true story!

Review/Interview by Stan Robinson

The world, on both sides of the oceans, held its breath as the events of 1979 were slowly revealed about a Chinese ballet dancer named Li Cunxin who wanted political asylum while performing in the United States. Director Bruce Beresford presents a journey back in time that captures

the lowly beginnings in China and the choice of destiny of a young boy through the art form of ballet, would put a strain on the ‘cultural/political bridge’ between two powerful coun-tries…

‘Mao’s Last Dancer’ is drama based on the autobiography by Li Cunxin. At age 11 in 1968, Li was chosen from a poor Chinese village by Madame Mao’s cultural delegates and ‘taken’ to Beijing to study ballet. Based on the philosophy of the Chinese govern-ment, its citizen’s primary duty was to serve the government and ‘be-ing chosen’ was looked upon as an extreme honor for the young boy and his family. The years of training go by, the young boy grows into manhood and a prominent dancer in China. In 1979, during a cultural exchange to Texas, he fell in love with an American woman. Two years later, he managed to defect and went on to perform as a principal dancer for the Houston Bal-let, and in his later years, a principal artist with the Australian Ballet.

We’re presented a documentation of the political climate, the drama of love, and the world of ballet by the sure hand of director Bruce Beresford. The most challenging aspect, “The merging of the primary elements of the autobiography to capture the spirit, political, and artistic worlds of China, the US, and ballet, in a period film set in a 20 year period from the 70’s through the 80’s was indeed a wonderfully challenging undertaking”

‘The Last Exorcism’,

Review by Randy Montgomery

A film can be really scary without special effects, excessive gore or masked killers. The most effective horror films in recent decades follow that premise; The Blair Witch Project, The Descent or Paranormal Activ-ity. Following that trend is director Daniel Stamm’s The Last Exorcism. A documentary film crew accompanies Cotton Marucs, a southern evan-gelical minister to the exorcism of a young woman named Nell Sweetzer (Ashley Bell). Reverend Marcus hopes to expose lies behind exorcisms. He enters the Sweetzer home almost to poke fun at the overly religious family, who he thinks will be cured of the demonic possession as soon as he

Page 13: Church Basement Ladies

puts on some hokey-pokey ceremony. He employs all sorts of hidden tricks to make the family and Nell believe she is rid of her demons. That doesn’t work as the “demon” comes back with a vengeance.

Numerous plot twists, turns and developments won’t be mentioned in this review, nor will the somewhat disappointing ending. About 95% of The Last Exorcism is funny, thought-provoking or scary, which makes for a roller coaster ride of a good time and fright. The other 5% we’ll ignore, as the rest makes up for it.

Relative newcomer Stamm and producer Eli Roth have created a near (emphasize near) horror masterpiece. Move over Linda Blair and Jamie Lee Curtis... Ashley Bell is the new horror queen. Give her an Oscar nod. The Last Exorcism makes Paranormal Activity look like a Saturday morning cartoon. Grade: A-

‘[REC] 2’,

Foreign horror films tend to be better than their American counterparts, especially when conceived overseas and recreated by Hollywood. I loved Quarantine (partially because of the interactive experience at Knotts Berry Farm’s Halloween Haunt) the Span-ish original, tilted (REC) was better. ‘Takers’, one last heist!

By Stan Robinson

If ‘heist’ films are your ‘guilty plea-sure’, and there’s nothing like a well laid plain going astray, this movie has the makings of being just that as a group of seasoned ‘Takers’ find their one last $20 million plan before calling it quits, interrupted by a hard-boiled detective who’s hot on their trail!

With an all-star cast of Zoe Saldana (‘Avatar’), Hayden Christensen, Paul Walker (‘Fast & Furious’ movies), Idris Elba, Matt Dillon, Chris Brown, Jay Hernandez, Johnathon Schaech, Michael Ealy, Tip ‘T.I’. Harris, and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.

Directed by John Luessenhop. Writ-ten by Peter Allen & Gabriel Casseus

and John Luessenhop & Avery Duff. Screen Gems release. Rated PG13 for intense sequences of violence and ac-tion, a sexual situation/partial nudity and some language.

Screenings are free and seats are available on a first come, first-served basis. Phoenix-area director Rafa Alcantara will appear to present the film. “HARRY BROWN”

Michael Caine does customarily excellent work as an unlikely avenger in this tale of asenior citizen out to even the score when young hoodlums kill a friend in his Britishneighborhood. Local detectives (Emily Mortimer, Charlie Creed-Miles) aren’t happy thatHarry is reapplying expertise from his anti-IRA days to act as a one-man army. “MARMADUKE”The comic-strip canine prompts another gathering of an all-star voice cast in thisotherwise unremarkable animated feature that maintains a dog’s life isn’t so bad.Having moved with his owners to Southern California, Marmaduke (who has thevoice of Owen Wilson here) tries to settle into his new environment despite resistancefrom some of the animal residents already there. Kiefer Sutherland, George Lopez,William H. Macy, Marlon Wayans, Damon Wayans Jr., Stacy Ferguson (alias music’sFergie), Jeremy Piven (“Entourage”) and the ever-distinctive-sounding Sam Elliott alsoare heard. ›› (PG: P) (Also on Blu-ray)

“THE VAMPIRE DIARIES: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON”The separate book series it’s based on had its own following already, but this CWseries surely hasn’t been harmed by the huge popularity of the similarly themed“Twilight” novels and movies. Arriving on video the week before its second televisionseason debuts, the saga lands heroine Elena (Nina Dobrev) between vampire siblingsStefan and Damon (Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder) ... one of whom has her welfareat heart and the other, not so much. Steven R. McQueen, grandson of the movieicon, also is a regular cast member. “NCIS: LOS ANGELES – THE FIRST SEASON”With the success of the parent show, itself a spawn of “JAG,” it was inevitable thatCBS would go for a spinoff. Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J are teamed, surprisinglyeffectively, in this adventure series following the cases of more operatives of theNaval Criminal Investigative Service. Oscar winner Linda Hunt (“The Year of LivingDangerously”) plays the duo’s boss, and Rocky Carroll makes crossover appearancesin his “NCIS” role. “Dr. No” (1962): Had this first screen adventure of Agent007 not succeeded, there might not have been one of theworld’s most enduring movie franchises, soon to mark its 50th(!) anniversary. Sean Connery’s casino-table debut with thelegendary line, “Bond ... James Bond,” remains one of themost indelible introductions in the history of film.“The Spy Who Loved Me” (1977): Easily RogerMoore’s best contribution to the Bond saga, this globetrottingadventure – 007 skiing in the Alps! 007 riding a camel inEgypt! – has a feel that’s jaunty without going over the edgeinto camp.

The Spice is Right by Chef Rachel Albert

Whether you’re bak-ing cookies or cakes, making fajitas or fri-joles, tacos or tuscan chicken, the right herbs and spices can make or mis-take

the dish. If the seasonings in your spice rack have lost their pizzazz, your recipes will be missing the “mmm…mark!”

To get the most fl avor, store dried herbs and spices in sealed jars in a cool dry place away from direct sunlight and the heat of the stove. What’s a sensible shelf life?

• Herbs (e.g., thyme, sage, marjoram) 1 to 3 years

• Herb blends (e.g., dill blend, chili powder, taco seasoning) 1 to 2 years

• Ground spices (e.g., ginger, cin-namon, cumin) 3 years

• Whole spices (e.g., cloves, pep-percorns, coriander) 4 years

• Seed spices (anise, celery, fennel, cumin) 4 years

Can’t remember when you last pur-chased them? They’re too old. Time to toss your collection and start fresh! Penzey’s Spices, located at 3310 North Hayden Road (near Osborn

Road) in Scottsdale, AZ 85251, can help. Phone: (480) 990-7709. You’ve got to see and smell their stock of more than 250 herbs, spices, and blends to believe how great spices can smell.

Famous for their fi rst-rate season-ings, people order them from all over. Cinnamon isn’t just cinnamon here. You’ll fi nd cinnamon sticks and chunks, ground Ceylon, Korintje Indonesian, Vietnamese extra fancy, China Tung Hing, or Penzey’s cin-namon blend, each with its own bou-quet of fragrances and fl oral notes. Oatmeal, oatmeal-raisin cookies, cin-namon toast, whipped honey butter, and apple pie will never be the same.

Looking for sausage seasoning? Try Bratwurst, Breakfast Sausage, Italian Sausage, Krakow Nights, Tsardust Memories, or Venison Sausage Seasoning. Select the size that suits you: 1.5 ounce (1/4 cup) jar, or a 4

ounce, 8 ounce, or 1 pound bag. Visit the store or their web site www.penzeys.com/ and request a catalog with their signature recipes.

Rachel Albert is a natural foods chef,

cooking instructor, freelance food and health writer and author of The Ice Dream Cookbook: Dairy-Free Ice Cream Alternatives with Gluten-Free Cookies, Compotes & Sauces and co-author of the award-winning book, The Garden of Eating: A Produce-Dominated Diet & Cookbook. PIZZA TRIVIADuring TV news broadcasts, most pizza is ordered during the weather forecast, and the delivery folks report that women are better tippers.

In the 16th century, Maria Karolina, the Queen of Naples eventually convinced her husband, King Ferdinand IV, to allow the peasant dish pizza to actually be made in the royal oven.

36 percent of all pizza orders want their pizza topping to be pepperoni, far and away the most popular pizza topping! We consume around 251,770,000 pounds of pepperonis every year.

Better Nutrition - Organic food helps your body fight off infections and maintain balance by being full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes.

No Toxins - No pesticides means a lower risk of cancer, birth defects, illness and a host of other maladies.

Tastes Better - Those who regularly dine organic will tell you the food has more flavor, fruits are sweeter, etc.

Environment - The lack of toxic chemicals used in organic farming means you won’t be eating the chemicals in your groundwater or your next crop rotation.

Variety - In addition to fruits, vegetables, grains, seeds, meat, eggs, dairy items, and baby foods, it’s possible to buy organic pasta sauces, salsa, fruit juice, soup, cereal, ice cream, peanut butter, tea, coffee, frozen dinners, chocolate, popcorn, snack food, beer and other beverages, to name just a few options available.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

Follow us on and www.worldclassbeverages.com

Just as there is an art to brewing great beer, there is an art to writing about great beer. And while many people attempt it, there are only a small handful that truly do a good job with it. Sadly, I am not in that group, but I do know of several people that are and thought it would be fun to talk about them a little bit and give you an opportunity to fi nd something to read about beer that’s better than this. I mean something besides the back of the bottle. Anyway, here is a look at some of the top beer journalists and writers.

The dean of all beer writers has to be Michael Jackson (not that one, the other one). Jackson is probably the most famous of all beer writers and an inspiration to most current ones. He came to the attention of the beer community back in 1977 when his fi rst book, The World Guide to Beer, was published. This book has been reprinted several times and trans-lated in to ten different languages. More importantly, this book set the groundwork for the modern theory of Beer Styles. In the World Guide, Jackson categorized beers in to styles commonly used today, based on local traditions and names. Jackson was

always very good at putting his beer reviews in context as local culture for each beer was always a prominent part of his writing. It’s this writing that inspired young brewers in many cities throughout the latter part of the twentieth century to create their own local beer cultures. This seminal work, along with President Jimmy Carter’s signing of a small law legal-izing homebrewing provided the base for the craft beer explosion we see today.

Michael Jackson went on to be a prolifi c writer, penning twenty books and providing copious amounts of copy for newspapers and magazines. He also had a show on The Discov-ery Channel aptly titled The Beer Hunter. Others have tried to usurp this name, but there is only one who can claim the title. What has Jackson said about Arizona? He only made a couple of visits here, but in 1997, he spoke highly of the fl edgling McFar-lane Brewing located on South 29th Street in Phoenix. McFarlane’s is no longer with us, but a few years ago, Papago Brewing pulled out an eight year old keg of their barley wine and it was still spectacular. The only other thing he had to say about Phoenix beer was not complimentary, but it should be noted that his disparaging comments were made upon tasting the Chili Beer that seems to be all

many tourists know about beer in this state. Jackson, who was also a world famous whiskey critic, passed away on August 30th, 2007 at his home in London. So this year on August 30th, raise a glass to toast one of the men who has been responsible for us having the incredible beer we have available today.

Fred Eckhardt’s primary beat is the Pacifi c Northwest, one of the meccas of craft beer. Eckhardt, now 84 years old, was a contemporary of Jackson and remains an active writer, critic and historian. His reputation for be-ing a bit of a character in his home-town, Portland, has also made him a “beer personality.” He is known as a homebrewer and advocate for craft beer. Most of his articles have appeared in two beer magazines, Celebrator and All About Beer. Eck-hardt also authored a must read book titled, The Essentials of Beer Styles, which furthered Jackson’s earlier

work and covered new ground in con-tinuing to defi ne the many traditional as well as evolving beer styles in the world. Many people know Eckhardt simply as Fred, which is convenient, because Portland brewery, Hair of the Dog honored him by naming a beer, “Fred.” Fred, the beer, is a big, bold, fl avorful product which provides a wonderful drinking experience, and, as further homage to its namesake, ages well. Fred also may be the only beer personality to have his very own beer festival. Fredfest is a small event held in May of each year to commemorate Eckhardt’s birthday. It always features some amazing rare beers and is a great celebration of the life of a true legend in the industry.

In previous articles, we have talked about San Francisco as being a pre-miere beer destination, so of course they have plenty of local bloggers and beer writers. Quite possibly the best of these, and one of the best in the country, is Jay Brooks. Brooks, who was a former corporate buyer for BevMo, maintains an incredibly informative blog titled Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeer-bulletin.com). Prior to that, Brooks was the General Manager of the Celebrator Beer News, a national “brewspaper.” He has also been ac-tive as a freelance writer regionally,

nationally and internationally. The man whom Brooks would consider the top beer writer in the Bay Area was named William Brand, who wrote a regular column in the Oakland Tribune. Brand was tragically killed in an accident in 2008 and Brooks took over the column of his close friend.

On the other coast, Philadelphia is a hotbed of great beer, both high end imports and craft. Somehow despite Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor laws, this city has become one of the best beer cities in the country. Right in the middle of this incred-ible beer scene is Lew Bryson. Bryson is self described as the award-winning, beer-drinking, whiskey-sipping, brewery-visiting, cask-tapping, thirst-creating drinks writ-er. He certainly fi ts that bill. He main-tains a terrifi c blog titled, Seen Through a Glass, has an informative web site (www.lewbryson.

com) and has inked several books covering the history of brewing in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. Bryson also writes from time to time for national publications and is one of the fi rst people called when local media needs a “beer per-spective”. His latest crusade has him taking on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and attempting to bring them into slightly more modern times, if not abolish them outright. These efforts alone are worth check-ing out his web site.

There are many other truly good beer writers out there, each with his or her own specialty and perspective on beer. Many of them are regional in scope and write for blogs, local pa-pers, regional magazines and “brews-papers” (there is that word again, isn’t it kind of a neat concept?). To fi nd them, just look for a copy of Cel-ebrator, Ale Street News, Southwest Brewing News, DRAFT Magazine or any of the others you can fi nd online or at the newsstand. If we all con-tinue to drink and discuss great beer, who knows, maybe someday Arizona will even have a decent beer writer to call our own. Until then, you’re stuck with me. Let’s go have a beer.

This longtime bar derives its name from the old lottery process of obtaining a liquor license. With a recent change of ownership, the new owner combines his experience both as a previous rugby player and as a restauranteur. We can defi nitely expect great things out of the kitchen. One of the fi rst changes made was to focus on offering a wide selec-tion of craft beer. For example, six of Draw 10’s draft handles are dedicated to local breweries such as SanTan, SunUp, Papago, Grand Canyon, Four Peaks and Sonoran. Their selection also includes a large number of bottled and canned beers.

As for the menu at Draw 10, it continues to evolve. Currently comprised of both red and green chili, burgers, sandwiches and such. One thing I defi nitely recom-mend trying is the Mac & Cheese with Green Chili. Hours of operation are 10AM - 2AM seven days a week. Happy Hour 4PM - 7PM Monday thru Friday includes $1 off all craft beers, 32oz domestic beers $5 and $3 well drinks.

The questions seem to outpointthe answers as the world’s best tennistalent gathers in Flushing, N.Y., for theU.S. Open beginning Monday, Aug. 30, onESPN2.

How will the average-of-late Roger Federerrespond to his shocking loss in last year’s final to virtual unknown Juan Martindel Potro, who himself has questions to answer following wrist surgery in May?He hasn’t played since then, but at this writing he was scheduled to make hisreturn in New York.

Similarly, will world No. 1 Serena Williams be a formidable presence aftermissing a lot of time this year with a knee injury and recent foot surgery? If not,who will be in position to take advantage of the three-time U.S. Openchampion’s rustiness?

PHX Gives Sat Aug 28th Everyone likes a good water park, especially out in the Arizona desert, yet somehow we never get around to actually going. This Saturday we have two good reasons to do just that. Phoenix Gives has teamed up with Wet’n’Wild water park to support two very IMPORTANT causes; the preven-tion of child sex slavery and domestic abuse. Streetlight is an organization bringing awareness, prevention, and healing to child sex-slavery victims. Most people think this problem is overseas yet, a staggering amount is in our own neighborhoods and on sites like Craig’s List! The Purple Ribbon Council aids children who have been orphaned by domestic violence and seeks to prevent abuse. By purchasing your Wet’n’Wild tickets through PhxGives.com, $3 of each ticket will go to the charity of your choice. Adding to the event are the Tractor Pull Divas who will be host-ing a series of live band performances starting at 1:30pm-5pm. The Trac-tor Pull Divas have mixed bluegrass, americana and modern rock to a successful sound labeled “New School American.” Come splash around, listen to your new favorite songs and help contribute to a cause that is not just a “good idea” but is necessary in preventing a forced loss of innocence every passing day. www.PHXGives.com

Hell City Tattoo Fest Aug 27-29th The Hell City tattoo festival is making its way to the West, specifi cally to the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa. My immediate thought was this would be of interest to only those in the indus-try. However, after much exploration I discovered that this festival offers more than tattoos. The convention boasts some of the most talented artists from around the country who

will not only be showcasing tattoo art but fi ne art as well. Events such as the Wet Paint Project, lets you watch as artists create art on canvas as they paint live. The Art Fusion Experiment lets you watch as a team of artists start paintings and switch off to com-plete each other’s every few minutes. There will be live bands too! Friday night The Father Figures, who have a post-punk sound, will be playing live. On Saturday, the music will be coming from The Green Lady Killers, a sexy female trio who blast high-energy garage-band rock and a bad girl at-titude. Sunday’s band will be Sursum, modern music that combines elec-tronic, rock, dance beats, virtual funk, guitars and synthesizers into a whole new sound. Other entertainment will include girl vs girl roller boxing, tat-too competitions, the lovely Suicide Girls, fi lm and educational seminars for those out to learn a thing or two about tattoos. And even a vaudeville-style “Freak Show,” consisting of all things sharp, pointy, death-defying, and well, on fi re. This promises to be sheer entertainment no matter if you have a tattoo or not. www.hellcity.com

BY JAY BOBBIN

Jimmy Fallon is about to get his biggest single audience yet, and he has Emmy tothank for it.

The “Saturday Night Live” alum and current host of NBC’s weeknight “Late NightWith Jimmy Fallon” gets an earlier showcase by presiding over the NBC telecast of the62nd Primetime Emmy Awards from Los Angeles’ Nokia Theatre on Sunday, Aug.29.

It’s a big deal for Fallon, who clearly likes to be liked; not only will he be seen bymany people usually not up late enough to catch his own show, but he’s an avowedtelevision fan.

“I don’t want to push too hard,” Fallon says of the one-liners he’ll deliver on Emmynight. “I want the Academy (of Television Arts and Sciences, which decides who wins)to be happy, I want (Emmy show executive producer) Don Mischer to be happy, andI want NBC to be happy. It’s not really about me. It’s more about celebratingtelevision and getting all of those (winners) face time.”

Fallon certainly is going into his Emmy gig well-armed with material. “We gavethem, I think, six or seven scripts,” he says. “They were like, ‘OK, stop it! That’s morethan enough. We have to give out awards at some point.’ I think that coming from‘Saturday Night Live,’ we kind of know how far you can push things, and what’senjoyable. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable. I want to make people laugh.

“We do throw away jokes sometimes if they’re a little bit too mean,” Fallon adds,“but they’re funny, and I get the laugh just in the office. When I ‘hit’ people, I do itin the nicest way, because I don’t dislike anybody. I love everybody and the wholebusiness that we’re in, so (I just make) a little playful jab here and there.”

The HBO miniseries “The Pacific,” with Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks amongits producers, leads this year’s Emmy nominations with a total of 24. The most-nominated regularly scheduled series is Fox’s freshman year comedy “Glee” with 19bids, including separate ones for stars Lea Michele, Matthew Morrison, Chris Colferand Jane Lynch.

TIONJimmy Della Valle

Jimmy Della Valle’s streetwise edgy flare, macho vulnerability, and his blue-collar twists always keep you on the brink of laughter. Don’t let his young looks fool you, he is a true professional who has been making people laugh long before he stepped onto the comedy stage over a decade ago. He has been headlining at major comedy clubs and colleges in the United States and Canada. Jimmy’s act has evolved from personal topics such as his hot-tempered Italian father, his neurotic Irish mother, his sister’s African

American husband, and his family’s gambling problem. His act takes you through his wild experiences with women and life’s many adventures. Jimmy is a member of the clean comedy division of EntertainmentMax.
