SALT A Look at Seniors Learning Together, Inc.

This is the seventeenth year that SALT (Senior Adults Learning Together), a non-profit corporation, is offering “enrichment learning” to people over 55. Sponsored by a coalition of churches in Dakota County, the program is, however, open to people of ALL ages! Sessions are held on four consecutive Mondays every Spring and Fall. Our goal is to appeal to a broad spectrum of interests with four presentations on various subjects scheduled each day (two speakers each hour). Participants choose one session to attend each hour. The first hour begins at 9:30 a.m. There is a 15 minute refreshment break between the first and second hour. The program is followed by an optional lunch at 11:45 a.m. that includes entertainment. Enrichment learning is an important factor in promoting good health for everyone. It provides mental stimulation and a curiosity about the world in which we live. Our life experience, combined with a natural curiosity, makes us valuable assets to our community. SALT’s emphasis is “salting minds,” that is, providing opportunities to enrich and season people as citizens in our democracy and contributors to the public good. For complete, up-to-date information on the SALT sessions each Spring and Fall go to the Risen Savior website at:

Minnesota As a Digital State presented by Thomas Misa

Minnesota was the nation’s first “Silicon Valley,” a region with a high-tech economy built on computing. Following the pioneering Engineering Research Associates (ERA) in St. Paul, a set of innovative computer companies—Univac, Control Data, Honeywell,

IBM Rochester and others—anchored a computer-centered industrial district. Computing gave rise also to the state’s medical device industry as well as high-tech prospects for today and tomorrow. Thomas Misa is a historian specializing in the interactions of technology and modern culture. He has published nine books, including ‘Gender Codes: Why Women are Leaving Computing’ (IEEE Wiley 2010); ‘Leonardo to the Internet: Technology and Culture from the Renaissance to the Present’; (Johns Hopkins 2011) and ‘Digital State: The Story of Minnesota’s Computing Industry’ (U of M Press 2013).

Life’s Journey—What’s in your Suitcase? presented by Chuck Tindell

Join Pastor Chuck Tindell for this engaging hour which focuses on what life lessons you are passing on to your children and grandchildren. Pastor Tindell will speak about how your traits will impact the futures of your family members. What is in your suitcase? Could it be a positive attitude, a sense of humor, a spiritual anchor, a sense of meaning or a purpose in life, adaptability, etc. You will be inspired, and your questions and concerns will be addressed.

Chuck Tindell is a Lutheran Minister who retired from 13 years of service as Director of Pastoral Care at a large senior care facility. He is presently working part-time as a visitation pastor for a church in Apple Valley and is a chaplain for the Apple Valley Police Department. History of the Ford Plants presented by Brian McMahon

The Ford Motor Company assembled cars at a ten-story factory in Minneapolis and two locations in St. Paul, including the recently demolished Twin Cities Assembly Plant in Highland Park. This illustrated presentation will examine the enormous impact Ford has had on the economic, social, and cultural life of the region for the past century. Henry Ford personally visited the Mississippi River site and shaped the design of “the most beautiful industrial plant in the world.” This hour will include stories from retired autoworkers who worked on Model A cars in 1927, several women who worked at the plant during

WWII, and workers who mined the sand in tunnels under the plant to make glass.

Brian McMahon is a trained architect who has received a number of research grants from the Minnesota Humanities Commission, the Minnesota Historical Society, the Minnesota Legacy Project, and the Minnesota Sesquicentennial Project. He has lectured and written widely on the subject of urban history. His most recent publication is the e-book, ‘A Short History of the Ford Plant: Industrial Archaeology and Economic Change in St. Paul.’ McMahon is currently completing a book on the history of the Ford Motor Company in Minnesota for the U of M Press, and is also working on a book documenting the history of industry in the Twin Cities.

Rosalie Wahl and the Minnesota Women’s Movement presented by Lori Sturdevant

Rosalie Wahl, the first female justice on the Minnesota Supreme Court, would be worthy to be remembered solely as a feminist pioneer. But she was also a reformer of both the judicial system and American legal education and a vigorous advocate of justice for all. She was also a product of what she would call a “yeasty time” of change for all Minnesota women. Journalist and author, Lori Sturdevant, will discuss her latest book, ‘Her Honor: Rosalie Wahl and the Minnesota

Women’s Movement,’ and invite participants to join her in considering the 20th century movement’s unfinished business. Lori Sturdevant writes editorials and a weekly column about topics she has covered for more than 30 years, including state government and politics. She joined the Minneapolis Tribune as a summer replacement reporter in 1975, returned as a reporter in 1976, and was lead Capitol reporter and a newsroom assignment editor before joining the editorial staff in 1992. She has been the editor or co-author of eight books, including her latest book ‘Her Honor: Rosalie Wahl and the Minnesota Women’s Movement.’

Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes presented by John Rosengren

One man modeled assimilation for a generation of Jews struggling to find their way in the New World: Hank Greenberg. With his broad shoulders and mighty bat, the Hall of Fame ballplayer transformed the way Gentiles viewed Jews and the way Jews saw themselves. During a time of intense persecution abroad and at home, the six-foot four-inch Greenberg stood tall as a beacon of hope, and ultimately, became a hero to all Americans. From his dilemma on whether or not to play on the High Holy Days to the controversy surrounding Greenberg’s induction into the army, Rosengren

captures the essence of the most important Jew of the 20th century and the greatest Jewish athlete of all time. John Rosengren is an award-winning author whose books include ‘Hank Greenberg: The Hero of Heroes.’ His articles have appeared in Men’s Journal, Reader’s Digest, Runner’s World, Sports Illustrated and Utne Reader, among other publications. He is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research, The American Society of Journalists and Authors, as well as Biographers International Organization. He earned his master’s degree in creative writing from Boston University where he studied with Saul Bellow and Derek Walcott. He lives in Minneapolis with his wife Maria and their two children.

Think Like a Dog presented by Julia Manor

Join Dr. Julia Manor as she reveals what may be going on between those two fuzzy ears of man’s best friend! This talk will explore what science is learning about the way dogs think and learn. Dr. Manor will answer these questions: How are dog senses different than human senses? What thinking can your dog perform that apes cannot? Can dogs learn complex language? You may be surprised to discover some fascinating facts.

Julia Manor graduated from Macalester College in 2004 with a degree in Psychology and a focus on Animal Behavior. She continued studying animal behavior in graduate school at the University of Minnesota where her thesis was on pigeon memory abilities. Food and Climate presented by Roger Salway

P-HT is a privately-funded limited company based in Chicago. The company primarily focuses on increasing the yield and productivity of cereals indigenous to Africa by adapting proven, yet-basic, pre- and post-harvest mechanized agricultural technologies developed in Asia and The Americas. Today many African communities experience food insecurity; this poses a real risk of devastating famine, which would be addressed by significantly increased crop yields.

Roger Salway is President of Post-Harvest Technologies Ltd. (P-HT). In 2008, he joined Compatible Technology International (CTI) as Executive Director. His background includes senior management experience in Europe and North America for Deere & Co. and more than 25 years of global manufacturing and leadership experience. He was Chief Operating Officer of Paper Calmenson & Co. and Executive Vice President for Capacity Web, a technology based company that facilitated efficient global industrial manufacturing and sourcing. Mr. Salway served on the Board of the Rose Ensemble.

How the Bible Came to Be presented by Pastor Emeritus Paul Harrington

“How the Bible Came to Be” is a fascinating and complicated story. It did not simply fall down from heaven. Rather it has a 2000 year history derived from written and oral traditions. How did the various

books of the Bible come to be? Who wrote them? Is it historical? Join Pastor Paul Harrington as he explains this “wonder-filled” book and the lessons we can learn about God’s faithfulness to his people. Paul Harrington, Pastor Emeritus at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Apple Valley, graduated from Luther Seminary in 1972 with a Masters of Divinity and Masters of Theology. He initially served in Pontiac, Michigan, and began his ministry at a new mission congregation (Shepherd of the Valley in Apple Valley) in 1981. Over the years SOV has grown to 9100 members. After 37 years of parish ministry, Pastor Harrington recently became Pastor Emeritus which allows him more time for family, travel, reading and writing.

Winston Churchill presented by Tod Worner

How does a man who was a love-starved son, a failing student, a stuttering speaker, and a reputed alcoholic become one of the most revered figures on the 20th century? Through vivid anecdotes, stirring speeches, and entrancing images meet Hitler’s greatest nemesis, Winston Churchill—a Titan in a Tyrannical Age. Tod Worner is a practicing internal medicine physician who has created five lectures (with more coming) in the Titans & Tyrants Lecture Series dedicated to telling the stories of the giants of World War II. He has also produced a theological series called ‘Bright Lights &

Luminaries’ and spoken nationally on Winston Churchill and G. K. Chesterton. He writes a blog on history and theology at Patheos known as “A Catholic Thinker.” “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

Preserving Ancient Words: Irish Scribes in The Book of Killowen presented by Erin Hart

Erin Hart has a special connection to Ireland, its people and its legends. A real-life discovery of a ninth-century book of Psalms was discovered in an Irish bog. Its discovery and the images and stories of the Irish people and places stirred Erin to write her latest novel ‘The Book of Killowen.’

Erin Hart writes archaeological crime novels set in the mysterious boglands of Ireland. Before a wayward detour into crime fiction, she worked as an arts administrator, editor, copywriter, journalist, and theater critic. Her books have won numerous awards. Erin lives in St. Paul with her husband, Irish button accordion legend Paddy O’Brien, with whom she frequently travels to Ireland to carry out essential research in bogs, cow pastures, castles, and pubs.

Prohibition: A Grand Misadventure presented by David Jones In 1920, the United States entered a period during which the manufacture, sale and transportation of intoxicating liquors was banned. As it turned out, the U.S. also entered a period of

lawlessness and corruption, unequaled in its history. Many Prohibition supporters felt that the passage of the 18th Amendment would bring about law and order and restore the family. However, numerous unintended consequences make this period one of the most fascinating misadventures of all time. David Jones, a resident of Minneapolis, is a native of St. Peter, MN. He graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College and spent 24 years in the financial services industry, three years in the nonprofit sector, and is now semi-retired. He has been speaking to a wide range of audiences on four different historical topics since 1996: JFK Assassination, Lincoln Assassination, Apollo Moon Mission and Prohibition.
