CONCEPTUAL DESIGN COMPETITION FOR COMPONENTS OF A COMMUNITY CENTER IN AN EASTERN SUBURB

OF BANGKOK: HUA TAKAE, LADKRABANG

Organized by Bangkok Metropolitan Administration in collaborationwith Thai Urban Designer Association

In designing community center of Ladkrabang which located adjacent to Suvannabhumi International Airport, our ideas were to propose “ a smooth transition” from fast speed, global travel-ing mode by planes to a more slowing down, local trains, boats, and our feet. New public space and facilities were proposed to accommodate new users such as tourists and university students while paid great respect to localculture of Muslim communities.

URBAN DESIGN

Suanluang market is one of the most famous food streets in Bangkok. More than 50 restuarants and food stalls attract Chulalongkorn students and communities nearby every day and night. We proposed to enhance its spirit by keeping existingurban fabric and improving quality of public space including sidewalks, building facades and an old shrine. Old car parking structure was to be redesigned as a new center of Suanluang Food Street.

CONSERVATION PROJECT WATERFRONT AREAS: BANGKOK NOI CANAL COMMUNITY, BANGKOK

This project aims to establish urban conser-vation in Waterfront areas: Bangkok Noi canal community,Thonburi in order to effectively conser-vation an original waterfront area to be able to link the unity with the new type of land use which has an importance in the city level. This study is conducted to analyses the physical economic and social in order to lead to the problem indica-tion, potential, limitation and menace existence of the area.

BANGKOK CULTURAL HERITAGE MAPPING PROJECT

Bangkok Cultural Heritage Mapping Project was initiated by the Association of Siamese Architect under the Royal Patronage in 2007. The project aimed to (1) survey and record cultural heritage nd translate into geographical data, (2) use as a medium for exchanging knowledge to further un-derstanding of cultural heritage, and (3) utilize as a reference data for future development plans. Kudeejeen neighborhood and Banbu community were selected as our pilot areas as they are some of the oldest communities of Bangkok along Chao Phraya river and facing great challenges in losing their rich cultural heritage.

In 2002, Satapat Asa Project (the Architect Volunteer) was initiated in Amphawa community by the Facultyof Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. The project used a pragmatic and action-based approach which aimed to promote student’s experimental learning in field related to community conservation and design as well as to stimulate awareness on local cultural heritage con-servation among the community especially the younger generations.
