President’s Message – by Virginia Taylor

This will be a bitter sweet message. It will be my last one as your President. It does not seem like it has been four years that I have been writing a message every month. Some months they were easy to write and other months it took a long time to figure out what to say. I hope all of you have enjoyed them and maybe learned a little bit from them. I know I have enjoyed writing them.

I want to say a very special Thank You to all my board members. Withouteach of you I could not have done my job. It has been a joy to work with all of you, both the current board, and the past board.

And to all of the members. You are what makes our society what it is. Without you we could not do all the activities we do during the year. I have lost count of all the members of other societies who have come to me to

congratulate us for all that we do. They are amazed that a fairly small society can be as active as we are. Many of the people who have commented belong to societies much larger than ours and they do not do nearly as much as we do. We could not do all we do without the help of all those who step forward when asked. Please continue to do so.

As you know I am not leaving the board, just stepping down to another position. If you know of any speaker in our area you would like to have come give a presentation to us please give me their names and contact information. I am open to all the help I can get to make our future programs topics you are interested in.

Please give Ceasar and the new board as much help and co-operation as you have given me over the past four years.

Next CVGS Saturday Workshop – 7 January 2017

The January 7th Saturday Workshop will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Community Room at the Bonita-Sunnyside Library (4375 Bonita Road). The subject will be the “Finding Your Elusive Ancestor: The Genealogical Proof Standard and Performing a Reasonably Exhaustive Search” presented by Randy Seaver. This event is free for all to attend. A description of the presentation is:

“Are you familiar with the five elements of the Genealogical Proof Standard (GPS)? It deals with information, sources, evidence, analysis and proof, and was developed by the Board for Certification of Genealogists (BCG). It is the 'standard' methodology for professionals proving assertions of genealogical facts. The first element of the GPS is 'to do a reasonably exhaustive search.'

“In this presentation, Randy will explain the GPS, take a whirlwind tour through traditional and online resources that should be included in an exhaustive search, discuss his favorite search strategies andtechniques, and describe a Case Study of one of his elusive ancestors that illustrates the concepts of the GPS.”

November 30 th “Heirloom Show and Tell” Review There were about 30 attendees at the "Heirloom Show and Tell" program on 30 November in the library Auditorium. In the business meeting before the program, the 2017/2018 CVGS Officers were elected.

Jane Strawn introduced the ten presenters of their heirlooms one at a time, with slides on the screen showing the treasures. The heirloom presenters and their heirloom treasures were:

1) Patricia Diane Godinez brought samples of and described her Desert Rose china collection, with the screen photo showing part of her collection.

2) Hazel Radtke brought her mother's glass spice canisters and told of her Hoosier cabinet from the 1920s.

3) Tameron Hodges talked about her great-uncle, Frank Hodges who was a "dirty" Los Angeles police detective from the 1930's. She has his badge.

4) Karen Yarger had photos of her Hepplewhite Pembroke table, made in 1790 and passed down from her Geoghegan and Dill families, which was too large to bring in, but photos showed the lovely satinwood inlays – and Gary Brock provided some interesting woodworking facts.

December 3 rd Saturday Workshop Review, by Susi Pentico

We held a "Shared Names, Times and Places” discussion for the Saturday Workshop at Bonita-Sunnyside Library on December 3, 2016. This event replaced Carole Sobke's talk which she wishes to give at a later time due to her illness.

We had 8 in attendance and it was great to see Jean Taylor back again. We helped each other find many leads. To learn more, read the post on our Educational Blog (http://ancestorseekersbytherootbound.blogspot.com/2016/12/shared-names-times-and-places-bonita.html). Put the URL for the blog (http://ancestorseekersbytherootbound.blogspot.com/) in your Bookmarks or Favorites on your web browser, or in your news reader, and visit the site frequently.

Using Our Library, by Susi Pentico

I'm working on ways to make our members and library resources available to those who can't attend our meetings. Several people at our Family History Day expressed interest in CVGS, but they work 9 to 5 and can't come to our meetings.

If you would like to spend an hour in our library's Genealogy Section using our books and being available to answer questions of others please let me know the days (Saturday or Sunday) or early evenings you would be able to help. We have done this in the past, and it is a good way to reach out to younger and community potential members. Also, you can work on your own research while there. Pleasecontact me with your suggestions at [email protected].

RootsMagic News

There is a new minor update for RootsMagic 7 users, version 7.2.2.0. This update addresses a problemwith changes in FamilySearch which caused RootsMagic to display other relatives as spouses and childrenon the Share Data screen. It also adds a couple of recently dedicated LDS temples. If you want to work in FamilySearch Family Tree, you have to update to this version.

They also announced that the planned synchronization with an Ancestry Member Tree will not be ready by the end of December. Stay tuned for a further update.

November 9 th Research Group Meeting Review

The 9 November 2016 meeting of the CVGS Research Grouphad 20 attendees.

In the first hour, Randy discussed:

* Three recently published books - Advanced Genealogy Research Techniques; Organize Your Genealogy; Genetic Genealogy in Practice - and passed them around the group.

* Finding his grandsons' 2nd great-grandparents birth and marriage records in Italian Civil Registration records on FamilySearch.

* Solving the mystery of Edward E. Seaver's parents using two newspaper articles and several onlinerecords, including an article that was about a man dying in a factory accident and leaving a pregnant wife.

* MyHeritage announced MyHeritageDNA service with ethnicity estimates and member matches.* The We're Related mobile app by Ancestry.com.

In the second hour, group members discussed their research problems and successes, including:

* Karen S. has found interesting relatives on the We're Related app, including Barack Obama and Marilyn Monroe.

* Ralph enjoyed the CVGS Family History Day. He commented about the new system at 23andMe - he wrote a match who didn't respond, but the match was able to obtain his name and information.

* Karen Y. noted that the day was the 396th anniversary of sighting Cape Cod aboard the Mayflower.

* Ana found 1890 tax records from New Mexico in a book on the Chula Vista library shelf.* Ceasar took the FamilyTreeDNA Big Y test, and needs to work with it more.* Linda bought three autosomal DNA kits at the 10/22 genetic genealogy conference and will test her

family members.* Arlene read the book Seven Daughters of Eve and recommended it to her family.* Susi and Mary went to the FamilySearch Library to investigate how to obtain the 1899

naturalization record for Antony Casper. They were told they need to contact the county probate court for the record.

* Sam took a research trip to Tennessee. He met a cousin at the library, and found a naturalization record and a marriage record immediately. He also went to the State Archives and determined that vital records started in 1908.

* Shirley is putting information from an 800 page surname book for the Greene family in Rhode Island into a separate family tree database.

* Bobbie is regrouping and has decided to work on three brickwall problems.

The next CVGS Research Group meeting will be 11 Janary 2017 at the Chula Vista Civic Center Branch Library (365 F Street in Chula Vista) at 12 noon in the Conference Room.

NOTE: There is no Research Group meeting in December on 14 December - that is the date of the Annual Holiday Luncheon at South Chula Vista Library.

Bobbie Lane has a correction to last month's Research Group summary: “It is my daughter’s son who is one-fourth Native American from his father’s side. Dennis and I do not have a one-fourth Native American son.”

November 30 th “Heirloom Show and Tell” Review (continued)

5) Linda Seaver shared a portrait of her great grandfather’s McKnew family in front of their home just after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Randy provided some family background.

6) Randy Seaver displayed a handsome ‘Union Case’ from the 1860’s, containing ambrotype portraits of his ancestors Isaac and Lucretia Seaver. Isaac was a Civil War soldier.

7) Virginia Taylor brought an elephant toy/doll – it started her on a lifetime elephant collection (she has over 500!).

8) Ceasar Castro brought his cell phone collection in a silver suitcase - it dates to the 1980s.

November 30 th “Heirloom Show and Tell” Review (concluded)

9) Bobbie Lane reminisced about the old family farm in Lake County, Illinois. One of her souvenirs is a birdhouse made from the wood of the 1902 barn; and she is so fortunate to have a 1995 video recording of her brother walking around the property, filming and recording family memories.

10) Susan Zimmer's treasure was her father’s World War II Army uniform from when he was stationed in Australia and New Guinea. She also showed off an authentic boomerang, which she no longer is able to master.

Fun Facts and Links

* Go to http://familyhistorydaily.com/genealogy-resources/50-free-genealogy-sites/ to see fifty freegenealogy web links.

* Divorce may have been forbidden in certain families and religious tradition, but that does not mean that married couples always got along or continued to live together. Your relatives may have never divorced, but instead may have lived separately based upon some legal arrangement.

* Interviewing relatives should never be a "one time and you are done" thing, even if the person insists they cannot remember anything else. Use documents you have located to get the interviewee's memory going.

* Newspapers from the past can provide critical clues about our ancestors’ lives. As a family historian, you’ve likely spent some time searching old newspapers for birth and marriage announcements, as well as obituaries.
