January 1955) is the 11th and

current Chief Minister of

West Bengal. She is the first

woman to hold the office.

Banerjee founded the party

All India Trinamool Congress

(AITMC or TMC) in 1997

and became its chairperson,

after separating from

theIndian National Congress.

She is usually called "Didi"

(meaning elder sister). In

2011 Banerjee pulled off a

landslide victory for the TMC

in West Bengal by defeating

the world's longest-serving

democratically-elected com-

munist government, the

Communist Party of India

(Marxist)-led Left Front gov-

ernment, bringing to an end

34 years of Left Front rule in

the state. Banerjee previously

served as a Minister of

Railways twice and is also the

first women Railway Minister

of India, Minister of Coal,

and Minister of State for

Human Resource

Development, Department of

Youth Affairs and Sports and

Women and Child

Development in the cabinet of

the Indian government. She

opposed forceful land acqui-

sition for industrialisation by

the then communist govern-

ment in West Bengal

forSpecial Economic Zones at

the cost of agriculturalists and

farmers.

Early life and career

Banerjee was born in

Calcutta (now Kolkata), West

Bengal to Promileswar

Banerjee and Gayetri

Devi.[She grew up in a lower

middle class family, and her

father died when she was

young. Banerjee became

involved with politics while

still in school, joining

theCongress (I) Party in West

Bengal and serving in a vari-

ety of positions within the

party and in other local politi-

cal organizations. As a young

woman in the 1970s, she

quickly rose in the ranks to

become the general secretary

of the state Mahila

Congress(1976-80). She was

a college student in the mid-

1970s.

Banerjee graduated with

an honours degree in History

from the Jogamaya Devi

College, an undergraduate

women's college in southern

Kolkata.Later she earned a

master's degree in Islamic

History from the University

of Calcutta. This was fol-

lowed by a degree in educa-

tion from the Shri

Shikshayatan College. She

also earned a law degree from

theJogesh Chandra

Chaudhuri Law College,

Kolkata.[Throughout her

political life Banerjee has

maintained an austere

lifestyle, always dressing in

simple traditional Bengali

cotton sarees called 'tant',

while wearing none of cos-

metics or jewellery and

always has a cotton bag slung

on her shoulder. She has

remained single throughout

her life.

Early Political Career

Indian National Congress:

Congress party, and as a

young woman in the 1970s,

general elections, having set-

tled into the Calcutta South

constituency. She retained the

Kolkata South seat in

the1996, 1998, 1999, 2004

and 2009 general elections.

In the Rao government

formed in 1991, Mamata

Banerjee was made the Union

Minister of State for Human

Resources Development,

Youth Affairs and Sports, and

Women and Child

Development. As the sports

minister, she announced that

she would resign, and protest-

ed in a rally at the Brigade

Parade Ground in Kolkata,

against Government's indif-

ference towards her proposal

to improve sports in the coun-

try. She was discharged of her

portfolios in 1993. In April

1996, she alleged that

Congress was behaving as a

stooge of the CPI-M in West

Bengal. She claimed that she

was the lone voice of reason

and wanted a "clean

Congress".

Trinamool Congress along

with SUCI[citation needed]

and the Indian National

Congress won the West

Bengal legislative assembly

election against the incum-

bent Left Alliance by securing

227 seats. TMC won 184

seats with the INC winning

42 seats and the SUCI

secured one seat. This marked

the end of the longest ruling

democratically elected

Communist party in the

Banerjee was sworn

in as Chief Minister of West

Bengal on 20 May 2011. As

the first woman Chief

Minister of West Bengal, one

of her first decisions was to

return 400 acres of land

toSingur farmers. "The cabi-

net has decided to return 400

acres to unwilling farmers in

Singur," the chief minister

said. "I have instructed the

department to prepare the

papers for this. If Tatababu

wants, he can set up his facto-

ry on the remaining 600 acres,

otherwise we will see how to

go about it," she added.

She has also been credited

to solving the longstanding

"Gorkhaland Problem" by

setting up the Gorkhaland

Autonomous Council.

She has started various

reforms in education and

health sectors. Some of the

reforms in the education sec-

tors include release of the

monthly pay of the teachers

on the first of every month

and quicker pensions for retir-

ing teachers.In health sector

In fact she was instrumen-

tal in the rollback of the petrol

price hikes and the suspen-

sion of FDI in Retail Sector

ation in West Bengal, Police

commissionerates were creat-

ed at Howrah,Barrackpore,

Durgapur-Asansol and

Bidhannagar. The total area of

Kolkata Municipal

Corporation has been brought

Police.

Even before assuming the

role of Chief Minister,

Mamata Banerjee had shown

keen interest in making the

public aware of the state's his-

tory and culture. She had

named several stations of the

Kolkata Metro after freedom

fighters, and plans on naming

upcoming stations after reli-

gious leaders, poets, singers

and the like. One of her

unprecedented moves as

Chief Minister has been to

arrange for the playing of

Rabindra Sangeet at traffic

signals in Kolkata.

On 16 February 2012, Bill

Gates, of the Bill & Melinda

Gates Foundation, sent a let-

ter to the West Bengal gov-

ernment praising Mamata

Banerjee and her administra-

tion for achieving a full year

without any reported cases of

polio. The letter said this was

not only a milestone for India

but also for the whole world.

Mamata Banerjee's Tenure

as railway minister is now

being questioned as most of

the big-ticket announcements

made by her last year when

she was the railway minister,

have seen little or no

she launched a Facebook

lic support for A.P.J Abdul

Kalam, her party's choice for

increased the frequency of the

oping tourism, enabling the

tion with two additional loco-

Thursday decided to publish

a white paper Oct 7 on the

steps taken by it to imple-

ment the 1985 Assam

Accord.

The decision was taken

during a meeting of party leg-

islators and senior leaders,

held at Chief Minister Tarun

Gogoi's residence at

Koinadhara Hills here.

Party leaders, present at

the meeting, said it was also

decided that the Congress

will put in efforts to build

public opinion across the

state about the steps taken by

it to implement the historic

Accord in the past 11 years.

"The white paper will

clear all the points which

have been raised by several

sections - the steps taken by

the government to stop infil-

tration from the neighbouring

country (Bangladesh), seal-

ing of the India-Bangladesh

border, detection and depor-

tation of Bangladeshis and

other related issues," said a

senior party leader.

He said that the party has

also appealed the Asom Gana

Parishad (AGP) to publish a

white paper on the steps

taken by it in implementing

the accord during its ten

years of rule in Assam. The

Assam government was

under pressure from several

quarters over the issue of

alleged non-implementation

of the historic Accord, which

marked the ending of six-

year long Assam movement.

Although the Accord sug-

gested sealing of India-

Bangladesh border and

detection and deportation of

illegal Bangladeshi infiltra-

tors, a large portion of the

international border is still

porous.

Similarly, there has also

been allegation that not

much has been done by the

subsequent state govern-

ments since last 27 years to

detect and deport the illegal

foreigners, mainly

Bangladeshi nationals from

the state.

The issue of Bangladeshi

infiltration has been in the

news headlines in Assam

since last month - particu-

larly after the clash between

the Bodos and Bengali

speaking Muslim settlers in

Assam's three districts of

Kokrajhar, Chirang and

Dhubri, which left 97 peo-

ple dead and rendered over

four lakh people homeless.

coalition, BJP on Friday said it has no intention

of toppling the government and will "wait and

watch".

"I don t want to talk about instability in the

government. They (Congress) should take care

of their alliance partners. We don t want to top-

been asked to expedite pro-

cedure to withdraw cases

He said that till now

3000 such instances, in

which fake cases were

lodged, had been identified.

When much political connotation was being given

to the meeting between SP chief Mulayam Singh

Yadav and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal in

Delhi on Saturday, the UP strongman had suggested

frequent meetings between the latter and UP chief

minister Akhilesh Yadav to ensure "exchange of ideas

between the two young leaders". Punjab deputy chief

minister Sukhbir, too, denied any political signifi-

cance into the meeting on Sunday.

It is learnt that they discussed the political situation

and felt that it was getting 4

fluid and Congress was getting weaker.

"After the meeting, Yadav told me that Sukhbir has

very good ideas and he and Akhilesh should keep

meeting and exchange them (ideas)," SAD vice-pres-

ident and former Union minister Balwant Singh

Ramoowalia told. Ramoowalia and Bathinda MP

Harsimarat Kaur Badal were also present in the meet-

ing between Mulayam and Sukhbir.

"Mulayam held that both of them have long

innings to play and should know each other well," he

said. Another point which the UP satrap felt very

strongly about was that Badal Senior should enter

national politics. It is learnt that it was Yadav who

wanted a meeting with Sukhbir and roped in his for-

mer Cabinet colleague of the United Front govern-

ment, Balwant Singh Ramoowalia. Sources said that

Yadav was improving his rapport with strong region-

al leaders, to take them along if both Congress and

BJP remain weak in the next parliamentary election.

Islamabad: India and

Pakistan on Friday signed

three agreements aimed at

redressing trade grievances,

maintaining quality standards

and cooperating in customs

issues to normalise trade rela-

tions.

The commerce secretaries

of the two countries signed

the agreements here after two

days of talks on commercial

and economic cooperation.

"Both sides expressed sat-

isfaction on signing of the

three agreements i.e.

Redressal of trade grievances

agreement, Mutual

Recognition Agreement and

Customs Cooperation

Agreement and directed the

relevant authorities to frame

rules and procedures to fully

implement these agreements.

These agreements are expect-

ed to substantially facilitate

bilateral trade mechanisms,"

said a joint statement issued

after the Sep 20-21 talks.

Both sides voiced satis-

faction over the progress

made in the bilateral trade

relationship, since the last

round held in November 2011

in New Delhi.

Noting that better trading

opportunities had opened up

through the land route, the

two sides agreed on the need

to strengthen the infrastruc-

ture further.

The commerce ministers

of India and Pakistan along

with the chief ministers of

Punjab on either side of the

border had in April jointly

inaugurated a new Integrated

Check Post (ICP) at Attari on

the Indian side of the Wagah-

Attari border.

On exploring the possibil-

ities of opening new land

routes for trade, Pakistan side

informed that a working

group on Munabhao-

Khokhrapar has been consti-

tuted.

"Indian side has already

conveyed constitution of

working group. It was agreed

that meeting of the JWG on

M u n a b h a o - K h o k h r a p a r

would be held in the fourth

week of October, 2012 at

New Delhi," the statement

said.

The need for more trade

traffic to be carried through

the Railways was emphasized

during the talks.

"For this purpose, it was

agreed that the railway min-

istries would hold joint coor-

dination meetings on a

monthly basis, at the appro-

priate levels."

The Pakistan side

expressed appreciation of the

steps taken by India to reduce

its South Asia Free Trade

Agreement (SAFTA) sensi-

tive list by 30 percent from

878 tariff lines to 614 tariff

lines as agreed earlier during

the sixth round of talks.

"To further deepen the

preferential arrangements

under SAFTA and to provide

level playing field to

Pakistani exporters in com-

parison to concessions

allowed by India under

SAFTA to rest of the coun-

tries in the SAARC region,

both sides developed a long

term plan," the joint statement

said. The next round of talks

is scheduled to take place in

India in April 2013.
