Eddie’s WelcomeWe were very privileged to welcome HRH The Duchess of Cornwall to Little Harbour, a joyous and uniquely uplifting experience for everyone present. It was a wholly memorable and truly outstanding visit, which brought joy and recognition of the work of Children’s Hospice South West in Cornwall and throughout the South West.

Notwithstanding the huge success of the visit, it is a real regret that we were not able to invite more of our supporters. As the visit was a private event, the numbers of guests had to be small. I hope this limitation has not caused undue offence, if so, I do apologise.

Her Royal Highness also expressed a wish to visit Little Bridge House and Charlton Farm and needless to say it would be a real pleasure to welcome her!

Whilst the Royal visit is a key focus, there is much to celebrate and share from Little Bridge House, Charlton Farm and our supporters in this newsletter.

Thank you for your ongoing support, which is a lifeline to those in such difficult circumstances.

With best wishes,

Eddie FarwellCo-Founder & Chief Executive

“Can I just say a few words, really to congratulate you, Eddie and all of the team whose work has made this very, very special place.

As you know I am patron of Helen and Douglas House so I know a bit about children’s hospices but the thing that always amazes me about them is when you arrive.

Before I visited one before I always thought they might be sad places but it’s completely the opposite they are uplifting and very, very special and I think this one is one of the most exceptional places I have ever seen.

Congratulations to everybody.”

Teenage Weekend fun A wide range of exciting activities at accessible family friendly destinations are generously offered by local businesses and enjoyed by our families.

Charlton Farm family story

12

Jack’s parents Dee and Jamie have always been passionate supporters of CHSW and endeavour to raise funds so other families can receive the same level of care and support. They are doing this through Jackfest.Jack died at the age of 16; his family described his life as full of happiness and joy, despite the difficulties he faced.

Charlton Farm has provided a lifeline for Jack Coogan’s family through many difficult periods. For Jack and countless others it has been a sanctuary to receive one-to-one specialist care in a relaxing, tranquil setting that encourages self-expression and allows children to gain the maximum enjoyment from life.

He was known as a lively character, full of smiles

and loved being around people, sharing laughs and the occasional cheekiness

Gifts in WillsOur supporters often mention how being part of the CHSW family enriches their lives. From volunteering in our offices or at events, the ways they help are numerous and vastly beneficial to us.One recently introduced volunteer role is that of Legacy Ambassador.

The Ambassador helps us in our mission to ‘leave a smile for the future’. Wendy Leach is our Ambassador based at Little Harbour and is

on hand to offer guidance on leaving a gift in your Will, a talk,

or a tour of the hospice and show how legacies make such a difference to the work that we do. Legacies are vital to us as they enable us to make plans for the years ahead, something our families are not always able to do. Remembering us in your Will means you will be part of our future. For further information contact our Legacy & Remembrance Officer, Rob Emery, on 01271 325270.

Knitters pull togetherCornish Knitters created colourful wool squares blanketing Lemon Quay, Truro, and raising £1866. Thanks to Nikki Jenkins of Truro Wool who came up with the idea and co-ordinated it all.

A Grand Day out This annual South West tour of Minis has raised a magnificent sum across our hospices over the years. This year ‘s tour raised over £16,000.

It’s a Dog’s Life Roo’s Whippet Tea Party welcomed over 600 dogs to the Port Eliot Dog Festival and made over £4500. Guests came from as far afield as Cheshire to take part.

I have been working in the shop for

10 years and still enjoy each day because of the variety it brings.

Working for this local charity is so worthwhile and I appreciate being able to

give something back in a way I relish.

Daily life can be challenging for the families of life-limited children but we are here to help give them a break. Our 24 hours a day, 365 days a year service enables families to take a well-earned rest, safe in the knowledge that their children are being well looked after by our care teams. The challenges faced by our families are soon to be reflected in the challenge Chris Walters and Elliott Dale are undertaking. In 2014 they will embark on a tough transatlantic rowing challenge, across one of the most unpredictable and dangerous oceans from New York to the Isles of Scilly.

At a time when

we felt completely alone and scared the

hospice helped us through some of our darkest

times; providing support, comfort, reassurance.

- Invaluable.

What our families say about their journey:

A place where a precious child is cared for with as

much love and compassion as a parent could offer.
