Chronology of Persepolis:

Reza Shah is put into power by westerners, and controlled by the

English/Americans

he Shah is his son, he creates a disparity between the rich and poor,

many re!olutionaries were against him due to his policies" #e was a bitdictator$y

he beginning of the boo% starts after the &slamic re!olution, hops bac%

in the ne't chapter to before, and starts telling the tale of the

re!olution and how (ar)i grew up in that time

(ar)i*s parents were wealthy, part of the discrepancy, (ar)i

doesn*t li%e the di+erence between the classes they ha!e a car,

maid etc"-

he re!olution wanted to absol!e social class, communism was in

fashion at that time-, and those who supported communism disli%ed

the shah e"g" mar)i*s parents-, they got sent to prison often

.i+erence in social class e'emplied by child labour 0 told by a

local author she li%ed, she realizes the di+erence, and her

shame of her father*s Cadillac

1urthermore by her maid came to her house at 2, raised her,

ne!er went to school, 3peasant*-

(ar)i 4the reason for my shame and for the re!olution is the

same: the di+erence between social classes5

(ar)i is growing up through this, can see character de!elopment fromchid to adult childish attempts to sympathize and understand the

troubles around her, she often got distracted when tal%ed to e"g" &*m

hungry during grandmother description of the failures of the shah-

Character de!eloped from early on 6 when not understanding,

she would read lots of boo%s about it

4& %new e!erything5 but doesn*t understand

47lac% 1riday5 a day where numerous were %illed, attac%ed by the

soldiers, so many were %illed that it was almost thought to be an

in!asion8 start of massacres 6 endlessness embodied by the mass of

identical bodies in the panel, seems li%e it ne!er ends

Afterwards, the re!olution ended and the Shah left in e'ile cuz he tired

for democracy-

After the re!olution e!eryone changed, all said that the Shah was shit

conformity, asch, unanimity-

Childishness of (ar)i as she tries to stic% nails into ramin, who*s

dad might*!e been part of the shah*s secret police, a childish

attempt to reconcile her ideas with the people around her

9earns about forgi!eness in tal%ing to more people, she grows a

bit older in understanding that people aren*t always in charge of

their actions

Child in that she has diculties empathising/understanding

She learned about torture, which a+ects a lot of her actions later on

4ga!e ;her< new ideas for games5

&rony of torture right after trying to forgi!e

#er mother*s trying to teach her two things, after the

re!olution things changed for her mother after she found

out what torture her friends went through

4=ou ha!e to forgi!e5 0 47ad people are dangerousbut forgi!ing them is too5

Childishness in that she would ha!e her father )ailed and

tortured so that he could be called a hero than ha!e him safe

>?C9E A?@@@@S#### She saw him as the hero her father wasn*t, childish ideas of one

upping by other people*s achie!ements e"g" during anoosh*s

story, she %eeps comparing him against 9aly*s father

She*s willing to tell her friends all about the 3hero*s* of her family

&n a country with half the people illiterate, can*t unite around mar'

reBuires religiousness

Childish in that she belie!es e"g" belie!ed that the shah was

chosen by god, belie!ed that DD"DD !oted for &slam, !s" her

father, he brings doubt into her life and showed her that things

weren*t always as they seemed, tells her what*s really

happening in all cases-

3the end of the world* when a boy she li%ed left

As more stu+ in &slam go to )ail, re!olutionise against the shah are

hunted down the fundamentalist regime

Anoosh repeats 3e!erything will be alright* at the end of pages

FG and FF, but with a di+erent image deant and sad 0 shows

progression and impact, also disbelief in his own words-

 hings change after Anoosh*s death, (ar)i e'plosi!ely re)ects and

abandons god8 the war beings

H year of passing between Anoosh*s death and the start of the ne't passage

As the fundamentalist regime sets in, gender roles start coming in

(ar)i wants to become an educated, liberated woman

he fundamentalist oppression of women parallels the panels in the

beginning of the no!el, threaten to rape (ar)i*s mom, start to

implement necessity of the !eil

4modern woman5 4progressi!e man5 pg IG

See another change of the people li%e when the re!olution against the

shah succeeded, sees how Buic%ly people change ideas and sides

Starts the re!olt against fundamentalism

Reach the point where the no!el started half way through the boo%

&raB$&ran war begins

See character growth that e!en though she said she wanted to be a prophet,

it ends up fading into her past$

She brea%s the Jth wall sometimes""" not signicant-

#orrors of war present in the %ey, sacrice for a chance at hea!en

4the %ey to hea!en was for poor people5

(ar)i*s family is also against the &slamist regime, and ghts it by doingbanned things li%e cards parties and wine

Character de!elopment in that she matures, doubts the

maternal instinct as her aunt abandons her baby on mar)i

(ar)i*s character, despite being more introspecti!e, was still a child

e"g" she went out for burgers cuz she wanted to be cool

7oo% focuses less on her personal narrati!e the older she gets, but

more on what*s happening around her she becomes more in!ol!ed the

older she gets-

4you are the guardian of the re!olution of this house5

Shows an understanding of what happens around her, but still childish

as belie!es a cigarette ma%es her a grown up

4loo% at how little mar)i is growing up" @ne day she*ll lea!e and you*ll see how

hard it is to lose your %ids5

(ar)i*s dealings with the female guardians of the re!olution

Sometimes highlights numbers and loss of identity through identical images

repeated

0pg HQ especially haunting as it contrasts with the images

immediately after

7ombing and %eys around each nec% !s" a happy party

Also produced a sudden change in tone

Showed Q sides to the war, as this story continually does

>sage of images sometimes pro!o%es more powerful images than words

e"g" (ar)i*s family at the hospital and truly seeing the horrors of war on

the people for the rst time

Khen her friend died, a completely blac% panel was used to depict heremotions, because she didn*t %now what she was feeling, or she was

feeling e!erything, or it was up to the readers to decide and to feel

without any hindrance 4?o scream in the world could ha!e relie!ed my

Sometimes sees things from another perspecti!e one usually wouldn*t

see from, e"g" last panel from another person*s perspecti!e"
