Road Trip160 Municipal Wharf 2Monterey, CA 93940USAGeocode: 36.60268800 : -121.88910700

We’re off to Point Lobos to capture some photos, videos andsoundscapes for use in this Chronicle. With a fringe benefit - PointLobos has the inexplicable ability to cure whatever ails us. It is a greatplace to recharge your sprit.

On the drive down from San Jose we were rocking out to KPIG FM ofFreedom California. That is “one ‘oh seven oink five” on the radio dial(107.5). It is one of the last great independent radio stations. Theyplay an eclectic selection of rock, country, and what ever music a realDJ wants to play!

A great place for a “pig-out” is Lou Lou’s “griddle in the middle” for“good eats and crazy waitresses!” Which just about says it all. It islocated on the real wharf – Municipal wharf No. 2 in Monterey CA. Notthe wharf for tourists. Lot’s of great food, huge pancakes and whenavailable the best crab Louie salad I have ever had. A tiny place withfew seats – do not be in a hurry.

Cypress Grove TrailPoint Lobos State Natural ReserveCarmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93923USAGeocode: 36.52054900 : -121.95048400

The Cypress Grove Trail winds through one of the two naturallygrowing stands of the Monterey Cypress trees remaining on Earth. The other grove is across Carmel Bay at Cypress Point.

These cypresses, which formerly extended over a much wider range, withdrew to these fog-shrouded headlands as the climate changedwith the close of Pleistocene epoch 15,000 years ago. The outermosttrees mirror the forces of nature and time; they survive the salt sprayand wind, with their roots seeking nourishment in cracks and crevices. It is not clear how much longer they will survive.

Point Lobos State Reserve was originally acquired to protect thesegnarled trees from developers. This particular grove is memorial to Mr.and Mrs. A.M. Allan, was the owner of the land in 1898 and wasinstrumental in Point Lobos becoming a part of the new Californiastate park system in 1933. The developers wanted to make the parkarea a residential area like 17 Mile Drive.

On this trail you get to go to an “other worldly” place. You walk throughan area of trees and rocks covered with very strange orange, velvety“stuff”. It is “green” algae. Its orange color comes from carotene, apigment that also occurs in carrots. The plant does not harm the trees.

Between the loop trail and the parking area and amid the denseshrubbery off trail, if you focus you may discover a dozen or morelarge mounds of twigs. These are Dusky-footed Woodrat houses, which may achieve great age and size as successive owners add tothem.

You can wander forever along the rock and inlets of the long westernface of the park with wild rock forms and dramatic surf, which includesthe famous Weston Beach. Brett Weston son of pioneeringphotographer Edward Weston made Weston Beach famous. PointLobos is where both Weston’s became supreme landscapephotographers.

After Edward’s death in 1958 his ashes were scattered at Point Loboson Pebbly Beach, since renamed Weston Beach on the Point Loboswestern face.

Go barefoot, you can feel all things that are good through your toes. And things that are cold – at all times of the year the Pacific watersare cold. If you go on a sunny day (fall and spring) you will warm rightup. We usually go her first, to get as much solitude as we can. Thelong rough staircase down the cliff to the beach discourages mostvisitors and it is worth the decent and climb back up.

The turquoise water and kelp forest of China Cove are amazing.China Cove’s sparkling jade-green waters are framed by hangingcliffside gardens. Into these cliffs the sea surges, cutting through thetiny cracks and faults in the brittle granite rock and in time createscaves that slowly become archways. These eventually collapse –forming islands like Bird Island, which is just around the point to thesouth.

We had to stop and have dinner at Pepper Mexicali Café in PacificGrove. I measure a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa,Margaritas and their Chili Rellenos. Pepper’s never lets us down. Ifyour inner carnivore is stirring, go for the Tacos al Carbon. TheMargaritas are killer, we splurge on one of the special versions – becareful they are mighty. You might have to stay in Monerey and sleepthem off. Oh darn!
