Our new resident, June Mary Tozzo isfrom “across the pond” having beenborn in Leeds, Yorkshire U.K. (Be-cause of her name, one would expecther to be born in June but she was ac-tually born in August!!!.) Her motherand father were both English.. Hermother volunteered in a Rehab. Hos-pital for WWII veterans. Her fatherwas a decorative painter sometimespainting murals on walls for those thatdesired them. He had been woundedin WWI but fulfilled his life by painting.June’s early years were spent in Leeds, Yorkshire, U.K. whereshe attended Crossgate Girls’ School. Early life in England isa little different than here in the US. June’s education startedat age 4 as children in England had to complete their school-ing young enough to help mothers who were volunteering towork jobs once held by the men before the war. Male studentswore short pants until they reached 11 years of age at whichtime they were expected to act mature. June was not allowedto wear stockings or slacks until she was 18. June, received her BS at Westminster School of Nursing. Sheworked for 6 years as OR nurse in London with doctors spe-cializing in plastic surgery. In 1964 she applied to be a spe-cial exchange post-graduate nurse in the United States andwas assigned to St Lukes in New York City for one year. Shealso, for 3 years, was Financial Advisor for the AustralianConsulate in New York City. until 1967. After that time shedecided to continue her education and she received a BA andan MA in Literature and Humanities. at Manhattanville Col-lege in Purchase NY. She then taught literature for 10 years. While working in the OR, it was there that June met a hand-some Italian doctor, Pellegrino (Bill) Tozzo, a Urology Resi-dent. Surgeon. When she was assigned to work along sidehim in the OR, June was not thrilled. She really loved plas-tic surgery OR, so it was NOT “love at first sight “ workingwith a urology surgeon. She was, however, impressed withDr. Tozzo’s expertise in the OR and soon their relationshipdeveloped into a life-long commitment. They were married inNew Rochelle, NY in December 1965 by Father John Ca-vanaugh. Bill and June lived in New York City for 3 yearsthen moved to New Rochelle where they lived for 30 years. They have a son, William, a PHD, head of the BedfordSchool District Math Department in Westchester County, NY.Their daughter, Marissa, is now living in Palm City has beena great helper in June’s move to Sandhill Cove. While in New Rochelle, June involved herself in tournamenttennis and golf, besides volunteering at the New Rochelle Med-ical Center. She was also an adjunct Professor of Literature atthe College of New Rochelle. Dr. Tozzo continued his practiceincluding many trips as a lecturer on urology with the AMACU.In 1997 they both retired and moved to Evergreen CountryClub in Palm City where they played golf, travelled abroadand volunteered at VIM (Volunteers in Medicine) in Stuart.

RESIDENT SPOTLIGHTJUNE MARY TOZZO

Dr. Tozzo eventually needed physical therapy so he choseWater’s Edge. at Sandhill Cove . They both were greatly im-pressed with SHC. After Bill died in 2017, June then movedto the Island of Cyprus as there were many family membersliving there. Even though she had a beautiful home with a viewof the Mediterranean Sea, she soon realized how much shemissed community living. Thats when she came to SandhillCove. She already had some friends here for a long time soshe moved here too . She is on the 3rd floor of Waterside witha great view of the river. She looks forward to playing golf again at Evergreen but firstneeds to finish unpacking !! We”ve all been there, right??
