• Chronic progressive disease of the lung caused by inhalation of toxic substances and chronic infective lung diseases like tuberculosis

• 4th leading cause of death worldwide, and estimated to become 3rd leading cause of death by 2020.

• Also causes immense suffering, and a huge economic loss for the country (India loses 7.5 billion US $ per year due to COPD)
