Chromebook Resources for Secondary Students
Secondary students that receive devices from DoIT during the COVID 19 closure will getting
Chromebooks. While these devices are slightly different from Windows machines they may be
used to, they function in much the same way.
Students will use their BCPS credentials to log into the Chromebooks and utilize Schoology and
Google Meet on the Chrome browser.
The following support documents are available for teachers, parents and students. These
documents are in order based on the order in which they should be followed.

Chromebook Wi-Fi Connection
When used off the BCPS network users must connect to a public or private network to use a
Chromebook. Users that have already signed into a specific Chromebook can log in without
connecting to a wireless network. Functionality will be very limited.
1. Restart the Chromebook if needed.
2. When off network the following screen will appear to indicate that no network is
available. Note the different icons for “open” vs. “Private” networks. Touch the name of
the network that you wish to connect to.

3. If connecting to a private network, the password will need to be provided (1). The shown
default Security setting (PSK (WPA or RSN)) (2) should be enough. There are other
choices if home routers are set up differently. Finally click Connect (3) to access the
wireless.
4. Log into the Chromebook with your BCPS username and password.

Exploring Chromebook Functionality (Off BCPS Network)
As you explore the Chromebook try out some of the following task to test out functionality.

• Go to a previous page on your browser
• Zoom in or out
• Open Launcher
• Show your row of apps (shelf)
• Hide your row of apps (shelf)
• View two apps side by side
6 Camera and Video Use the following support materials for the following tasks:
• Take a picture
• Take a video
• See your photo or video from the downloads folder of your files

Connecting Your Microsoft OneDrive in Schoology
Connecting your Microsoft OneDrive in Schoology allows you to access your OneDrive files to
upload and attach to assignments in Schoology.
To connect your OneDrive:

1. Log in to Schoology and click Resources in the
top menu bar.
2. Click the Apps icon on the left side menu.
3. Click on the Microsoft OneDrive Resource
App.
4. Click Approve and then click Authorize.
5. Log in to Microsoft with your BCPS credentials.
Be sure to include the @bcps.org after your
username.

6. You will see that your OneDrive has been
connected and your files will appear on the right.
Your OneDrive files will now be accessible from
the Resources tab in the App section.

Apps and Extensions for Chromebook The WAS column of this chart identifies the apps/extensions that students were using on the
HP device. The IS column identifies the comparable application, without loss of functionality,
that students can now access on the Chromebooks. The Student Access column provides basic
details about where students would go to access.

*Narrated PowerPoint files shared with students can still be accessed and viewed from a Chromebook; however,
students using Chromebooks will not have the ability to narrate a PowerPoint to create a screencast, as this
functionality is not supported in PowerPoint Online.

Using Office Online via BCPS One and the Chrome Office Extension to Submit Files in
Schoology
The instructions in this document are intended to support the use of Microsoft Office in a virtual
environment of mixed devices (PC, Chromebooks, etc.).
Instructions are provided for the following scenarios:
1 – Access, create, and save a file in Microsoft OneDrive using BCPS One
2 – Access, create, and save a file in Microsoft One Drive using the Chrome Office extension
3 – Uploading documents saved to OneDrive to submit assignments in Schoology
To access, create, and save a file in Microsoft OneDrive using BCPS One:
Tasks What You’ll See
1. Log in to BCPS One
2. Click Instructional & Productivity Tools
3. Click Microsoft Online and sign in with your
BCPS credentials. Then click OneDrive to access
your files.
4. To create a new file, click the + New file icon

5. Use the menu to choose the type of resource you
want to create. It is best to organize your
resources in folders so you can find them easily.
6. Click in the title box to type a title for your file.
Be specific so you can easily find the file later.
7. Continue working on your file. Your changes will
be saved automatically.

To sign into the Office Online Extension (student only needs to complete once/device):
1. Click on the Office Online Extension icon in the top right corner of
the Chrome browser.
2. Click the Sign in with a work or school account icon.
3. Enter your BCPS Username followed by @bcps.org and click
Next.
4. Select Work or school account.
5. Sign in with your BCPS account. Again, use your BCPS username
followed by @bcps.org and your BCPS log in credentials.
6. Once you are signed in you will now be able to use the Office
Online Extension to upload and open Microsoft files with Office
Online.

To access, create, and save a file in Microsoft One Drive using the Chrome Office extension
(intended for Chromebook users):
1. Download file to your computer from Schoology or
another online source.
2. To open an Office file, click on the Office extension
icon in the top right corner and click Upload and
Open.
3. Find the file you want to open in the list, click it, and
click Open.
4. The file will open in Office Online and you can click
Edit in Browser to make changes.
5. Files you upload and open are automatically saved in
the Office Online Extension folder in your One
Drive.
6. To return to your file, click on the Office Online
Extension icon in the top right corner and click
OneDrive. Your file will be saved in the Office
Online extension folder.

To upload one of your saved files from your Microsoft One Drive to Schoology:
Tasks What You’ll See
1. Log in to Schoology and open your course.
2. Navigate to the assignment you want to submit.
3. Click Submit Assignment.
4. Click Resources.
5. Click Apps on the left side bar and click
Microsoft OneDrive Resources App to find your
Office Online extension folder.
6. Open the folder to find your file.
7. Click the checkbox next to the file you want to
upload and chose Import and then Import File.
8. You will see that your file has been submitted.
