Battle success!
Congratulations to the Year 8 Battle of the Books team who successfully took second place in
this borough competition against the rest of the Richmond secondary schools. Congratulations
to the RPA team who just beat us by 2.5 points! This is the first time that Christ’s has made the
top two, so we are thrilled and very proud of our students. The teams were lucky enough to be
presented with their prizes and certificates by Catherine Bruton (author of We Can Be Heroes &
I Predict A Riot) who also gave them an
inspiring and energetic talk about
becoming a writer. Cakes were also eaten!
The triumphant team members were:
Lucy Blitz, Holly Harvey, Leah
Howard, Izzie Lack, Lucas Lagadec,
Carolina Santilli, Julian Wiltsher &
Jack Woodward.
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye
to Mr. Greenwood who has been an
incredible servant to Christ’s School for forty
two years. I am sure that you join me in
thanking him for his dedication, hard work
and contribution to the education of
hundreds of young people who have passed
through our gates in that time. We wish him
well for a very long and happy retirement.

Summer Summer Summer
Holidays!Holidays!Holidays!
Oxford University
Seventeen students spent the day at Oxford University on Friday 19th June.
The day was o and getting places at Oxford. It is clearly hard work but worth it, and the starting point is getting great GCSEs. They also learnt that most degrees can lead to any career so the advice is to apply for something you are really keen to study. We did a tour of the college and had lunch in the grand dining hall. Following that, we walked to the famous Bodleian Library and did a mini research session at the Pitt Rivers Museum. It was a great day with lots to learn.
Christ’s School Digital Library
Use the digital library to read over the summer - down load your e-books onto
your tablet, phone or laptop and read for free! Compatible devices:

Library link. If you don’t know your login details please ask the Librarian.
Important: Changes to the Timetable
From September 2015 we will be following a new timetable
as shown below. Students are expected to arrive promptly
to school at 8.30am for the start of their first lesson so that
they do not cause disruption to other’s learning. The
timetable will run on a fortnightly basis, Week Blue and Week
Gold. When we return to school in September we will be
using Week Blue. Please ensure you check your child's diary
to support them in arriving to school with the correct
equipment for their lessons.
Chocolate, Philosophy & Maths
Ten Year 10 students attended a Mathematical enrichment event at Kingston University this week. Hamish, Dragomir, Alexander, Arthur, Sarah, Hugh, Tom, Henry, Ambra and Sebastian were all lucky enough to be invited to look at the maths in chocolate fountains, teapots and mayonnaise, with Adam Townsend.
Ben Sparks took us on a whistle-stop tour of some of the exciting bits in the history of numbers.
The students found it “inspirational”, “funny”, and “informative”. Mrs Morris and Miss Stewart also joined in, thinking about a simple, yet profound, question; where do numbers come from?
We Need To Talk About Alice
This week our English & Drama Department, expertly directed by
Mr Miller, proudly put on a devised piece of immersive theatre
based on Alice in Wonderland. ‘We Need to Talk About Alice’
showed off the talents of Christ’s students from year 7 and
upwards. Mime, slapstick comedy, musical theatre and spoken
word came together and beautifully captured the essence of
Lewis Carroll’s iconic book. It was an uplifting, anarchic and fun-
filled evening. Mrs Tarrant has clearly been hiding her talent under
a bushel! Thanks to Mr Miller, Mrs Brown, Mrs Hillier, Mrs Tarrant, all
the students and everyone involved for their hard work in bringing
this production to us.

Masterchef
Last Tuesday a group of aspiring chefs were invited to Jamie’s restaurant in
Richmond to learn Italian cooking with Jamie’s chefs, Mateusz and Cetadel.
We had most of the restaurant to ourselves as the staff explained what we
would be cooking, which was pizza and ravioli. The students were kept busy
rolling, mixing, and assembling ingredients together and filling their creations.
There was time to discuss a whole range of food and seasonings with the chefs
and then, of course, we ate what we had made. The day was finished off by
learning to mix non-alcoholic cocktails.
All the staff at Jamie’s made us feel really welcome and we learnt so much
about simple cooking with fresh ingredients.

Two Bespoke Sixth Form Days
We were delighted to take 3 sixth formers who want a career in either mechanical, electronic or
aeronautical engineering ona day to Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. The visit was organised for us
by a member of staff from BAE systems and comprised of being shown round by one of the
engineers who described the work at the docks, from design, to build and finally to scrap. We
were then taken on a tour of the Hunt-class minesweeper and shown the ship from an engineering
point of view, how to build in anti-shock devices, how to design a stainless kitchen that does not
have a magnetic signature, and overall how engines and systems are all maintained. It was
fascinating day and somewhat of a contrast to leave the docks via the Mary Rose museum and
HMS Victory.
Three sixth formers who are interested in taking up nursing/midwifery careers were taken on a
day of simulated learning in the community and clinical skills with 2nd year undergraduate nurses
from Kingston/St. George’s. Our students acted as Health Care Assistants, joining the nurses
going into mock-up flats and meeting patients involved in te role play. The task was to sort out
the priorities, carry out necessary care and then think about on going support for the three
different cases. In the afternoon their work was checked and they had to justify their decisions
and diagnoses. It was an interesting day for the sixth formers and gave them an insight into the
standards expected within nursing care.

Maths Challenge
Earlier this term 10 year 7 students competed in the UK Mathematics Challenge,

From our 10 students we were successful in winning 10 certificates - with 2
claiming Silver and 6 Bronze.
Many congratulations to all who
