Standing Stones by Jasper Spires
I have arrived in a truly wild place. Even though the sun cast its rays as best it
c ould , there is still a c hill in the a ir: a c hill of d esola tion, a c hill of lone liness. I
be gin my journey on a d am p de solate p lain as I wa lk awa y from the villag ethe c hill ge ts strong er.
Up on the Moo rs I am aw are that I am not a lone, the sheep bleat ing serve a s
a c onsta nt rem inder and this c om forts me . Ahead I c an see large stone s
protruding from the g round , they form a c irc le of sta nd ing stone s and look as
if they have b een p ut there b y some alien rac e.
The statues of granite p rec ariously ba lanc ed on to p of ea c h othe r on a high
pea k, form a silhouette of g iants on the ho rizon. I c ontinue, the c hill dee pens
pene trating, sap p ing m y strength. I arrive a t the foo t of the p ea k and
encounter a horse, its coat is jet black and it has a wild, haunted expression in
its eyes so I take a n alternative pa th a nd be gin my asc ent up a hard a nd
unforgiving boulde r field. Eventua lly, I ma ke it to the top ! The view wa s wo rththe effo rt, I c ould see for miles a round , I fee l exhila rate d . Sta nd ing on this
mo nume nta l struc ture I fee l the history flow through me ... I see anc ient
peo p le worshipp ing the ir God s. A ma n is laid on the la rgest stone, a sha rp flint
raised ab ove him! I withdraw ... there wa s no nee d to m ake a n enem y of my
imagination, not here.
I am c omp letely unaw are that the land sc ap e b elow me is be ing swa llow ed
up, engulfed by a sea of fog . My view is now c om pletely c overed in a
b lanket of white. I feel c laustrop hob ic; I have to lea ve b efore it swa llow s me
up too . It sta rts to ra in a s I be gin my d esc ent; the smo oth, wet g ranite has
turned the b oulde r field into a de ath trap . The fog c law s hea vily around m y
ankles and I am unsure o f wha t lies be nea th.The fo g is incredibly de nse o n the low er ground there seems to be mo re
mo isture in the a ir tha n oxygen . Cold, we t a nd d isorienta ted , it is ea sy to
understa nd ho w so ma ny peop le have p erished on these mo ors.
Eventua lly, I am ab le to feel grave l unde rfoo t a nd I am relieved to find m yself
on a pa th. I sme ll woo d smo ke and see it is rising from the ruins of a n
abandoned eng ine house, I de c ide to seek refug e until the rain subsides. I
c limb through a c rumb ling arch to find a ma n wa rming himself by the fire.
Excuse me, would you mind if I took shelter here? I ask. I take a step closer
and c an see tha t he has thic k, blac k hair and a w ea ther-be ate n fac e. His
heavy, woollen jacket is littered with dust. He turns to face me, No night to be
out on the Moors he replies. His voice is ragged and broken, his eyes areem pty: he exudes a d ea thly aura . Sudde nly any threa t on the Moors seems
insign ific ant c ompared to the p resenc e o f this ma n, I am filled with fea r. I
sc ram ble b ac k through the a rc h, as I look b ac k I c an see no e vide nce of him
or the fire eve r having b een there. I summ on everything in my be ing to p rop el
myself a long the p a th and b ac k onto the M oor. I see the sta nding stone s and
know tha t I am running towards c ivilisa tion. My foo t sna gs on som ething, I fa ll
to the g round and hit my hea d on a slab of g ranite. My vision b lurs, I c lose m y
eye s and fa ll into the da rkness.
Som etime later, a loc al would c om e a c ross a bo y lying on the ground. He had
susta ined a b low to the hea d , he was de ad . The m an with thic k blac k hair,
wea ring a heavy woollen jacket c rouched over the b ody. He e ma nated ac hill that w ould d rive a ll life a wa y. He sc oo ped the boy into his arms, turned
and hea de d ba c k towards the fog gy Moo rs. Lea ving in the boys plac e, a
large stone .
