A PLACE FOR THE LIVINGin the “city of the dead”

The building is about polarity and inversion.

Throughout the cemetary we can see plant life threatening to disrupt

the enclosure of the tombs.

In the inversion, the plant life completes the enclosure rather

than disrupts it, the trellises providing opportunity.

Likewise with sunrise and sunset,

the trellises act as a frame.Projecting light into the space for the living at sunrise, and into the

space for the dead at sunset.

The only day-use homeless shelter in the city of New Orleans, Ozanam Inn has been serving the homeless since 1955. The site is a parking lot, adjacent to the building that sleeps 120 men every night and serves 500 meals a day. The project was to re-imagine the under-considered, chainlink-fenced day space into a place that might bring a sense of dignity those who use it.

The City of New Orleans lives in a paradox. To keep the city dry, the city runs the pumps. Running to pumps adds to subsidence, sinking the city. Closing the Loop is an intervention. By taking an underused service alley on campus and re-imagining it as an agent to hold water, we can stabilize our soil, alleviate pressure on the pumps, and teach a community how to live with water as opposed to pumping it away. The project was a submission to the EPA’s Rainworks Competition in collaboration with graduate students from the LSU School of Landscape Architecture.

The Higher Power House is an exercise in creative reuse. Previously serving as a facil-ities plant, the building has an iconic character, defined by three towering smokestacks and an attention to craft and detail. The ambition of the project is to take a building designed to house machines and turn it into a public amenity, introducing new program and breaking down the scale while preserving the attributes that make the building ep-ochal.

Programmatically, the renovation seeks to take that building that is specific in use and create a space that is flexible and adaptive. The Higher Power House will contain a concert hall, event spaces, offices, and serve as a place of worship. It can accommodate events scaling from a gallery show to an outdoor music festival. It will sit as the only building in a public park, a privileged site for an important institution.

The Tree House Memorial is an amalgamation of two typologies: a tree house and a path. While a tree house is used by children as a refuge that fosters imagination and excite-ment, a path is utilitarian, a line connecting points through which things move. The combination of these two programs creates a unique journey through space that pairs the function of a path with the excitement and playfulness of a tree house.

The Tree House Memorial aims to strengthen the connection between the Children’s Gar-den and the rest of the Botanical Gardens in Clemson, South Carolina. The utility of the path, a 1:12 slope, establishes a physical connection for all, while the whimsi-cal form of the treehouse draws the eye, fostering a visual connection. The structure runs through the tree line allowing users to experience the tree canopy while framing a grassy meadow to the North. The path is a function of the site; bending around nine trees and selectively revealing itself to the meadow below.

The Exell Recruiting Center is a metal building that needed a new face to embodied the contemporary ideas of the company it housed. The project was to re-imagine the first twenty four inches of this building, to give face to the face-less.
