For something to communicate effectively the typographical solution must communicate quickly while remaining original. It must also be easily understood by the intended target audience. The final solution is seen by many, however the process behind the solution is the most crucial aspect of design.

Team Tactical Insertion decided that their pixel would be made up of bullet shells. Those in the military or police force go through rigorous training and preparation before they set out to complete their goals. Their intense training prepares themselves to be successful in whatever they do. The same is true for design. Proper training and planning in design sets the solution up for success. The bottom design was chosen because it can be read from both sides.

The bullet shells were donated by St. Johns County shooting range. Thousands of bullets were sorted through until all of the .45 caliber shells were separated. Each pixel is represented by a single .45 caliber bullet shell which is rotated from top to bottom to create a diagonal design in the word. To build the word, the group used hot glue guns to glue 4 pixels together. They then glued 3 sets of 4 to make rows of 6 x 2 bullets. Finally, the rows of 6 x 2 bullets were glued together to create each letter.

Each letter is made up of straight rows of bullets. The lengths of these rows varied from rows of 30 bullets to rows of 18 bullets. They were then pieced together to spell out the word TACTICAL.

Finally after all the hard work of gluing the bullets together, “TACTICAL” was pieced together in its final resting location. The word was placed into a busy section of Saint Augustine, Florida. The final word was 10ft x 1.4ft and contained 3,312 bullet shells.

Secret of Light is a lighting system whose appearance and operation is based on the dandelion flower and our typical interaction with it. This lamp, designed by Qin Xue, Cao iXiaoxiao and Wei Hangshuai, is a unique lamp that requires interesting interaction. The bulbs can be lit up by shaking the lamp. Each bulb can then be

turned off by blowing on it. Secret of light is a Red Dot award-winning concept.

Secret of light typeface has many characteristics that mimic both, a dandelion flower and the secret of light lamp. The typeface features large counter spaces to provide the airy feel of the flower and the Secret of Light lamp. Tall cap heights were used to translate the proportions of the stem and flower to the typeface. Lastly, circles are used to represent the shape of a dandelion flower and the motion censored bulbs of the lamp. The choice of yellow on the packaging was also influenced by the colors of

a dandelion flower.

ProLiteracy is a nonprofit international literacy organization based in Syracuse, New York. ProLiteracy champions the power of literacy to improve the lives of adults and their families, communities, and societies. They envision a world in which everyone can read, write, compute, and use technology to lead healthy, productive, and

The Type Factory museum is a museum in New York City that show cases all things typographic. Each month the Type Factory features typefaces from different decades. This month will feature Caecilia Lt Standard from the 1990’s. This Linotype typeface was designed in 1990 by Peter Matthias Noordzij (PMN), and named for his wife, Caecilia.

The name of the show is “Break Tradition.” This name was created to relate to the new types of design that emerged in the 1990’s, such as the grunge style of David Carson. This grunge style was used in the advertising of the Type Factory show and in the Caecila Lt Standard type anatomy book. This booklet will be given out upon

entering the 1990’s Type Factory event.
