Christmas Tree Farm Block

Pieced block design made from Triangle in a Square blocks, strip piecing, and fabric squares

Finished size 12” Square, Unfinished size 12 ½” square

Overview

The construction features oversized blocks that are then trimmed. This increases the accuracy of the piecing. Please read each step carefully. The block pattern is made from 8 tree block squares and 8 plain squares. Here is an overview of the steps to make the tree blocks:

1. Make a 3 ½” Triangle in a Square block. This may be done by using the attachedtemplates, attached paper piecing templates, or the Quilt in a Day Triangle in a Squareruler. The instructions will assume that you are using the templates. The paper piecedtemplates are included for those who prefer paper piecing.

2. Cut ½” off the base of the Triangle in a Square block. It is necessary to do this beforeadding the tree trunk strip. Otherwise, your block will be too large.

3. Sew the ½” wide tree trunk strip to the base of the trimmed Triangle in a Squareblock. The strip is slightly oversized so that you can accurately center the tree trunkunder the tree. Trim it to size before sewing it on to the base of the tree. Each tree blockshould measure 3 ½” square.

Requirements Fabrics:

Green 1: Cut 2 of Triangle Template C



Brown Fabric for tree trunks:

Cut 1- 1” x 9” strip

Background Fabric

Cut 8- 3 ½” squares

Cut 8 of Triangle Template A

Cut 8 of Triangle Template B

Cut 2- 2" x 9” strips

Tools:

Sewing machine, rotary cutter, cutting mat, scissors, ruler, water-soluble marker or pencil, iron, plastic sheet or cardboard and paste to trace and cut templates or 8 foundations for paper piecing, or a Quilt in a Day Triangle in a Square ruler

Pattern Notes:

• Use a ¼” seam allowance.• Finished Block size is 12” square, Unfinished size is 12 ½” square.• The templates include a ¼” seam allowance. Cut along the outside edge.• Paper piecing templates are included for those who prefer paper piecing.• Press as indicated.


Safety Note:

Care needs to be used when cutting with a rotary cutter. Blades are sharp. Only cut fabric with rulers that are designed to be used with rotary cutters.

Assembly Make 8- 3 ½” Triangle in a Square Blocks for Tree Tops

1. Trace the outer edge of the templates onto a clear plastic sheet and then cut thetemplates out with scissors. Or, you can cut out the paper template, paste it onto apiece of cardboard, and then cut out the cardboard template.

2. Place the templates on the fabric. Use a water-soluble marker or pencil to trace aroundthem on the fabric. Each 3 ½” block will need one green fabric cut with Template C, abackground fabric cut with Template A, and a background fabric cut with Template B.

3. Sew Triangles A and B to each side of Triangle C to form a 3 ½” square. When sewing,put right sides together and sew with an accurate ¼” seam. Press the seams toward theside triangles as they are added. Please see diagram.

4. Trim ½” from the base of each of the Triangle in a Square blocks. Please see diagram.

Complete 8 Christmas Tree Blocks

1. Make a strip set. Using a ¼” seam, sew one of the 2” x 9” background fabric strips toeach long side of the 1” x 9” brown strip to make a 4” x 9” strip set. Please see diagram.

2. Press the seams toward the tree trunk fabric.3. Cut the strip set vertically to make 8- 1” x 4” Tree Trunk Strips. Please see diagram.

4. Trim the 8 tree trunk strips so that they each measure 1” x 3 ½”, making sure that thebrown fabric square is centered in the strips.

5. Sew a 1” x 3 ½” Tree Trunk Strip to the bottom of each of the Triangle in a SquareBlocks. Please see diagram.

6. Arrange the Christmas Tree Blocks and the 3 ½” background fabric squares together tocomplete the Christmas Tree Farm Block as shown in the finished block diagram.

7. Sew rows and press the seams toward the background fabric squares. Then sew rowstogether to form the 12 ½” block. Press toward the bottom edge of the block. Enjoy!
