The Christmas Tree by Martinus Kleffegård Aaeng

The Christmas tree is one of the

most important traditions. Many

people purchase the tree and some

are going in the woods and cut it

down. They either drag it or drive a

snowmobile, and when the tree is

home it gets decorated and dressed

up. And after it’s done, all the

presents are put under to the tree.

When the evening comes, we get

paid for all the work.

Rakfisk is made of trout. In Norway it’s common with trout

and char prepared to rakørret. Raking of fish is partly a way to

prepare it. The fish is salted and put it into a closed butt in the fall

and in the weeks before Christmas is finished. Rakfisk is often

prepared with lefse, potatoes, sour cream and red onion.

Recipe for ‘’rakfisk’’

1. 80 grams salt pr. litre of water (4 litre, ca.).

2. You need a bucket (10 litres), a plate, a stone and a cover to

the bucket.

3. Rinse the fish strictly and be careful so you don’t destroy

the fish inside!

4. Put the fish close to each other (bottom up)

Next level crosswise. Inside each fish you can put 4-5 salt corns.

5. Strew some sugar on top (just a little.)

6. Pour the brine over the fish, put plate on top, then the stone.

In Norway there is an old custom to dress in old clothes and maybe a

mask and then visit homes and beg for something to eat or drink. This

is done in the days between Christmas Day and New Years. This tradi-

tion is from the Middle Age and symbolises the dead who is led by a

creature dressed in animal hide and have horns and dances and make

noise between the houses. In the old days this could be quite scaring

and suddenly show up at dinner parties even though then new who it

was.

The tradition has been different from parish to parish, from town to

town and from generation to generation. Today it is mostly children that

dresses in old clothes and masks and goes around. The tradition here is

then to guess who it is and then you get sweets. Of course also adults

do it, then you mostly get something strong to drink.

This is more like Halloween, but our tradition.
