Christmas morning is one of the most exciting mornings of the year, especially for children, but
often the anticipation of gifts galore results in a whirlwind of wrapping paper, and before you know it, all the gifts are opened in a flash.

Tips from Santa All editorial supplied by Amanda Wright
1. Imagine the excitement your children will have if a special letter is left by Santa, explaining that Rudolf has hidden one of your gifts outside, and Santa hasn’t been able to find it. Leave a wee trail of bells and other decorations which look like they could have fallen off a reindeer to lead to a secret stash of gifts.
To extend the joy for longer in the morning, here are Santa’s tips on how to make the magic of Christmas morning
linger.
2. The never-ending gift! Multi-wrap presents with a ‘wee surprise’ in every layer. Place a toy, message or sweets in each layer of wrapping to be discovered before the main gift is finally revealed. Mix it up with jokes or other novelties which will lengthen the unwrapping process.
3. Begin the gift opening with a single gift which also includes a clue to a treasure hunt. The children will be sent on an adventure all over the house as they retrieve ‘mystery gifts’ which have to be opened one at a time to reveal the next clue.
4. Save a gift for the evening. If you have a particularly special gift that you want to remain as a cherished Christmas memory, tuck it away until Christmas evening. When the tummy’s are full, the excitement is winding down and everyone is glowing after an amazing fun day, inject one last piece of Christmas magic by giving one final gift before bed time.

Getting creative is a great way to capture the Christmas spirit throughout December. Not
only will you and your children create memories, it will save you money right when you need it most.
DIY decorationsPersonalise the festive season by adding an
element of handmade to the mix, with these
crafty ideas.
Tree tradition Every year, celebrate all that you
are thankful for by placing a personal decoration on your tree to represent your year. It doesn’t matter if you are single, married or have children, it’s a great tradition to begin. Make your decoration from scratch, or buy one that is symbolic to you. Add the
year onto it, and you have a keepsake forever.
If you start when your child is young, by the time they are ready to move away from home, they will have a collection of decorations for their own tree to continue their tradition with.
Classical gold Using out of date school
books, cut strips of paper of varying lengths to create a decorative effect when stapled top and bottom. Shorter lengths in the middle, longer toward the outside. Stain the paper with
tea to give it an aged look, and then glue and glitter the edges to add a shimmer.
Not just for the tree, these decorations look great dangling from various lengths in a window.
It’s a wrap
One of the simplest, yet prettiest table-top decorations
are artificial gifts. Take a gorgeous wrapping paper and wrap three boxes of varying sizes. Decorate with elaborate ribbons, and then glue the arrangement together in a way which looks great. Add other decorations such as baubles to your arrangement for an added Christmas touch.

Take a rubber foam tube, and glue the ends together to create a circle. If this isn’t possible, use a round object like a pot or dinner plate to draw a circle on cardboard and then take a smaller object to create a hole.
The rest is as simple as glueing your left-over baubles onto the circle. Use ribbon to create a hook to hang the wreath, and if desired, use sprigs and crystal beads to add extra features to the wreath.
Pinecones Take your children on a pinecone hunt
and let the fun begin! Use silver spray paint and shimmery bows to make beautiful decorations, or paint the tips white to create a snow effect. Glue pinecones together to create a wreath, or glue two or three together and hang ribbon and beads for window display decorations. Use decorated pinecones arranged in a ‘nest’ and place a candle in the middle for a beautiful table decoration, or simply arrange in a bowl.
Candy cane sleigh Attach candy canes to the
bottom of gifts to turn them into instant sleighs. Attach a chocolate Santa for extra effect. Or attach a small decorative box to the candy canes, to make a sleigh gift box. Fill with lollies, chocolate or other decorative items for a sweet sensation.
Wonderland in a cupTake some stiff cardboard and
cut a circle slightly larger than the circumference of the top of a clear, plastic cup. Make your own little winter wonderland characters, or purchase wee figurines to place inside. Use cotton wall or polystyrene balls to create the snowy floor, and add glitter for sparkle. Once the winter land scene is secure on the base, carefully glue the plastic cup over top.

O Christmas tree…When the Christmas
trees, adorned in sparkling glory, begin to make appearances in every corner of the globe, it’s a universal sign that the festive season has begun.
The Christmas tree is a symbol of life and hope. A beautifully decorated
evergreen tree, with colored lights which twinkle against
the tinsel, brings to life many warm memories of Christmases past.
The Christmas tree has become one of the most beloved and well known
holiday symbols.
But where did this tradition come from?
It is somewhat appropriate that the Christmas tree remains as a symbol of festive joy over most of the world, as it seems that it originates from a combination of many Northern Hemisphere practices, long before the birth of Jesus Christ.
Christmas trees are part of a long tradition of greenery being taken into the home during December to brighten the dreary winter. In the
Northern hemisphere, the shortest day, known as the winter solstice, happens on or close to December 21. People during these times believed that the sun god had grown weary, but this day represented the time that the god would recover and become strong again, bringing the farmers longer days, more light and green pastures to grow their crops.
Many ancient pagan rituals and celebrations happened over this time, including the Halcyon Days in Greece, a period of calm and goodwill when it was believed the sea was calm for birds to lay their eggs; and the Roman celebration of Saturnalia, a celebration of the god Saturn. These celebrations resulted in an exchange of gifts, a feast and the temporary suspension of social divisions between slaves and masters, hence the peace and goodwill element of this time of year.
Along with the giving of gifts, the feast was later Christianized with the selection of December 25th to announce the birth of the Son of God, Jesus Christ, to the world.
The Christmas tree as we know it today had not yet developed, and many believe it originated in
Germany. One legend, says that the German priest, Martin Luther, was inspired by how the stars twinkled through the trees during an evening walk through the forest, and he wanted to bring this beauty home. He cut down a fir tree and took it home to his wife, and placed small candles on the branches to represent the beautiful Christmas sky.
In later years, apples were used to decorate fir trees to represent the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden.
In the early 19th century, the custom became popular among the nobility and spread to royal courts as far as Russia. In 1846, Queen Victoria, who unlike previous royals before her time, was extremely popular, and dictated much of what was considered fashionable for the time. The Queen and her German Prince, Albert, were sketched in the Illustrated London News standing with their children around a Christmas tree. It caught the attention of royal followers all over the world, including the fashion-conscious East Coast American society.
It was that single event which propelled the Christmas tree into fame, a custom which soon became adopted and practiced all over the world, not just within royal families, but all families regardless of class or society.
Artificial or real, crackers and candy canes or baubles and bells, every family has their own traditions when it comes to their modern-day Christmas tree, but one thing remains constant across the globe, the symbolism of hope, joy and peace on earth that this humble tree represents to us all.

It didn’t happen by accident. With pre-planning and careful consideration, your tree at home
can look like it was decorated by a professional.
Make those tips sparkleEver wondered how
department stores get their Christmas trees
looking so perfect.
Step 1 - Colour
Choose a colour theme to suit your home.
A tree that covers all the colours of the rainbow can look just as great as a colour-themed tree, but if you want a new look, try red, green and silver; or blue, silver and black on a white tree for a funky change. If you have children, you may want to opt for a fully coloured traditional tree, to incorporate their hand-made decorations.
Step 2 - Fill the inner
Start with your tinsel, and thoroughly wrap it closely to the inner of the tree, bulking out the gaps between branches.
This is designed to make your tree look full and lush, to emanate sparkle from depth.
Step 3 - Light it up
Next comes the lights. Again, the colour should be chosen to match your theme. Like the tinesl, start in the inside of the tree, giving the tree depth, ensuring that there is an even distribution from top to bottom, from the inside to the outside of the branches.
Step 4 - Strings of beauty
Crystals and other sparkly beads can look gorgeous strung throughout the branches of the tree for extra glimmers of light.
Step 5 - Baubles and
A beautiful tree has depth, so start by hanging your decorations from within the depths of the tree first. When hanging the decorations that will be seen clearly on the outside of the tree, start with your largest ones first, ensuring an even size and colour distribution. Then repeat with medium and small.
A tree-topper should be magnificent, so choose one which will stand out. Whether it’s a star, an angel or something more unique, if it shines, then so will your tree.
Step 6 - Top it off

Simply festiveYou don’t have to be
Nigella Lawson to make your treats festive. Here are some simple ideas that require next to no preparation, and hardly
any skill at all.
Jellybeans A simple bowl of red and green
jellybeans look great in a bowl, or spread on a platter to be used as the base around a dessert, such as the pavlova.
Strawberry Santa
Simply cut the top off to use as the hat and slice the leafy part off so the strawberry stands upright.
Squirt or pipe a blob of whipped cream or icing, replace the tip for the hat and pop a tiny bit of cream on the top. Use little chocolate sprinkles for the eyes, and you’re done!
Candy cane pops
The simplistic version is to push a fluffy marshmallow onto the end of a candy cane, but to spruce it up a little, use melted white chocolate to securely attach the marshmallow, and to dip the bottom of the marshmallow in before scattering red sprinkles on top.

A feast for all senses
Lovingly embellished in traditional green, red and gold, or inspired by the fun feel of a decadent
candy buffet, capture the magic of the holiday season in festive touches for your dining table.
If you are hosting a glorious Christmas spread this year, enhance the beauty of the season with a lavishly adorned table to set a merry mood. While the Christmas tree is often the star attraction of a home, the dining table is the scene of decadence and conversation, and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Traditionally, decorating a dining table can be complicated, as often platters and plates of food are delivered to the table, for guests to share.
This year, consider a separate serving area, perhaps by hiring a second temporary table, to place the prepared food. It’s easier to keep hot food hotter and cold food cooler if you have a table set specifically for the occasion, much like a buffet setting in a restaurant.
This will leave your dining table clear for conversation and decoration, and your guests will appreciate having additional room.
Now that you have the entire table clear to work with, begin in the centre.
Either you will have a magnificent centerpiece to work from, or if not, then firstly choose a colour theme. Red and green allows you to incorporate rustic and traditional enhancements such as frosted pinecones, sparkling fruits and sprigs of evergreen.
A gold or silver theme allows the occasion to be regal, with gold-trimmed plates, gold napkin bows and a golden table runner.
Goblets would complement a regal theme nicely, anything that encompasses the feel of a royal banquet.
A winter wonderland theme is always fun, with white on white, with touches of sparkling silver, crystal and hints of pale blue. If you have overhead lighting, dangle sparkly snowflakes and baubles from above to complete the scene.
For a fun and funky twist, incorporate a lolly theme, from the bright colours of licorice allsorts and M&M’s, through to the red and white stripe of a candy cane. The centerpiece can simply be
a large glass bowl filled with candy, with fun Christmas-themed treats throughout the table.
Crockery, cutlery and glasses should all be of the same set. Think of it as an early Christmas present to yourself if you need to buy a new set. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but having everything matching will add elegance no matter your theme.
Consider incorporating edible elements to your decorations where possible. If there is a delay with the turkey, your guests will have something to nibble on.
Traditional themes look great with candy canes, a gold theme could incorporate Ferrero Rocher chocolates, or a silver theme could utilise white marshmallows and silver Hershey’s Kisses.
Don’t forget the cracker for a cracking great evening. Get original and include fun props, such as fake moustaches, eye patches, silly teeth and googly eyes to create memorable photos as the wine flows into the evening.
