Matthew’s passage and Taylor’s sermon about the lamps and brides-maids can spark many thoughts. At times, we grip tightly to the lamp, carry extra oil, trim the wicks, and do “all the right things” in anticipation of the moment we need light. Other times, we bring our lamp, but forget core things like oil in order to have light when we need it. Ultimately, we get left outside in the dark. How we anticipate the future, wait for the arrival of the bride-groom, or even prepare for Jesus’ second coming can paralyze or inspire us. The gift in this passage is discerning how we wait, and, as the late Tom Petty sings, sometimes “the waiting is the hardest part.”

Consider for a moment how our parish grew in lay leadership while we waited for our clergy situation to stabilize prior to the arrival of Derrick and Taylor. Or look at how St. Timothy’s has been engaged in Living Local: Joining God while discerning our future together as a Community in this Community.

Here is wishing that each member of St. Timothy’s this holiday season can find the gift in waiting that brings us all together.

“God Sightings”

The season of Advent is a time of waiting, watching, and praying. It is also a time for reflection on those moments in our life where God is uniquely present. Those moments where we experience the presence of the Christ through a relationship, an event, in nature, or, might I say, in the lights that are prematurely hung to celebrate the Holiday season. Of course, the last statement “prematurely hung” is coming from a liturgical snob that tries to focus everyone’s attention on Advent, not Christmas. Unfortunately, sometime the culture wins. And, yes, it will win in our house, as well.

The Liturgical Art’s Guild working with our Living Local: Joining God guiding team is offering each of us an opportunity to share a moment where God has been present in our life. They are calling these “God sightings.” The directions for sharing these moments in

your life are contained in the announcements (p. 11).

As I shared in my sermon on Christ the King Sunday, I experienced one of those God sightings at an event the Monday before Thanksgiving. The event was 1Table, and it took place on Martin Luther King Blvd. in front of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center (event pictured to the right). You can learn more about the event at http://www.causeway.org/1table/.

Gathered around 1Table were people from all walks of life—city leaders, people without a home, corporate executives, college students, disabled veterans, Christians, Muslims, Jews, Atheists, Agnostics… it was beautiful. Everyone was smiling. It was pure joy. Just maybe what we talk about every week is true—the Kingdom of God begins around a table! Not only at the altar of St. Timothy’s, but wherever bread is broken and stories are shared.

As we enter Advent, I challenge each of you to look for moments when God is present in our lives. Reflect on those moments and share them.

I wish you all a Holy and blessed Advent.

Grace and peace,Derrick+

December Lectionary

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,my spirit rejoices in God my Savior;

for he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed:

the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.

He has shown the strength of his arm,he has scattered the proud in their conceit.

He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly.

He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

He has come to the help of his servant Israel, for he has remembered his promise of mercy,

The promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children for ever.

Register at http://www.etnyouth.org/registration Happening #75 Date: February 23-25 Ages: 9th-12th grades Price: $80

Happening is a spiritual awakening and renewal weekend where high school youth have a face-to-face encounter with Christ through Christian community. This is done through a series of talks, given by youth about their experiences in faith and in life. It’s honest. It’s up-front. St. Timothy’s own Hugh Jackson, a high school junior, is ‘Rector’ leading the weekend.

New Beginnings #3 Date: April 13-15 Ages: 6th-8th grades Price: $55

Middle school is a challenging time both in social and faith development. With so many questions (Who are my friends? Where is my faith? Is it okay to be me? How does this all tie together?), it can be tough to find a safe space to work through it all. New Beginnings provides a time and place in Christian Community to explore those questions and more. St. Timothy’s youth director Elizabeth Burns is helping to coordinate this weekend.

Holiday Service of Light on December 21On Thursday, December 21, St. Timothy’s Circle of Support for Caregivers will host a Holiday Service of Light geared to those who are grieving, experiencing loss, or otherwise finding the holidays a difficult time. Illness, death, divorce, loss of someone we love, or even the instability of current events can cause traditional holiday celebrations to feel hollow and painful.

On the longest night of the year, we will gather at sundown, 5:30 p.m., in the chapel at St. Timothy’s for a service of prayer, medi-tation, candlelight, and music. It will be for anyone, anywhere who could use a message of hope and healing, so we invite you to bring friends or neighbors who may be struggling with loss this holiday season. We will follow with a brief gathering with cider, fellowship and refreshment in the labyrinth narthex. Our music will be provided by harpist Sue Ann Reinisch.

Adult Confirmation Do you, or someone you know, want to be confirmed?

On January 28, our new bishop, The Rev. Brian Cole, will make his first annual visitation to St. Timothy’s to celebrate the Rite of Confirmation. If you want to be confirmed, come and join us for three dinner classes (January 10, January 17, and January 24), where we will discuss the books Welcome to the Episcopal Church and Jesus Was An Episcopalian.

We will order books for those interested, then we will gather for dinner, ask and answer questions, and discuss the impact those things have on us as Episcopalians.

We hope that you will join us for this more casual approach to adult Confirmation preparation. Please contact Taylor at [email protected] to sign up.

Making Memories at AdventA cherished tradition at St. Timothy’s has been bringing together generations of parishioners to create live Advent wreaths. In addi-tion to this fun seasonal event, the children have made Chrismon ornaments that have adorned the Parish Hall tree. This year, these traditions will be combined into one big Advent celebration for all!

Everyone is invited to come together during the Sunday School hour (beginning at 9:30) on Sunday, December 3, in the Parish Hall. There will be stations for creating live Advent wreaths, making ornaments, decorating the church’s tree, and working on giant coloring posters together. The hope is that all parishioners, no matter their age, will gather around together to make lasting memories.

To make the Advent wreaths as beautiful as possible, the church is asking for donations of live greenery and berries. Please let the Children’s Formation Director, Jessie Pogue, know if you can bring some with you on the morning of the event. Some of the best greenery in years past has come from parishioner’s own backyards!

Year End Reminders from the TreasurerPlease remember to fulfill your 2017 pledge by December 31, 2017. Checks need to be either placed in the offering plate on Sunday, mailed to the Church to Cary Haney, or placed in her mailbox outside of the Parish Hall. If you have any questions, please contact her by either phone or email (contact information listed below).

If you’re new to pledging at St. Timothy’s and would like a book of pledge envelopes, please contact Cary Haney.

If you plan to fulfill your 2017 pledge, prepay your 2018 pledge, or fulfill, all or part, of your Capital Campaign commitment by gifting stock, please contact Cary Haney, for instructions.

If you’re 70.5 or older, and you are subject to a required minimum distribution, you may be able to donate up to $100,000 as a roll-over from your IRA to fulfill your 2017 pledge balance, to prepay your 2018 pledge balance, and/or to contribute to the “Bringing Us All Together” Capital Campaign—all without adding to your 2017 taxable income. If this applies to you, contact either your investment advisor or your accountant to discuss this timely option!

To get in touch with Cary Haney, St. Timothy’s bookkeeper, contact her at 423-886-2281, ext. 305 or [email protected] during her regular office hours (Monday–Thursday, 8:30 – 4:30).

Recognizing St. NicholasDecember 10 is a special day for the children of St. Timothy’s. This is the day that children of all ages are invited to leave the 10:30 service behind the Children’s Chapel banner for a special St. Nicholas chapel service that combines Wiggle Worship and Children’s Chapel. Those who are preschool and elementary-age will line the hallways with their shoes before entering the Parish Hall. The children will then gather together to hear about St. Nicholas and then be joined by a special visitor! As the children exit back to the Nave, they may find a special treat awaiting them in the halls.

Preparing for the Children’s Christmas ProgramThe children and youth will again be putting on a Christmas production during the family-friendly 4:00 Christmas Eve service. The youth and Club 45 kids will be invited to participate in specific roles, while all the younger children will be invited again this year to come to the service dressed as an animal for the nativity portion of the play. St. Timothy’s encourages the children to use their imag-inations! The animals will remain in the pews with their families until welcomed forward at different moments during the produc-tion. Rehearsal for these roles will take place on Sunday, December 17, at 4:45 p.m. in the Nave. For more info, email Jessie Pogue at [email protected].

Late ChurchLate Church will be taking a more contemplative turn as we enter Advent. We will gather in the chapel at 5:30 p.m. for evening worship on the three Sundays of Advent (12/3, 12/10, and 12/17). The service will be a time for reflection and spiritual renewal.

Living Local: Joining God During AdventMany of us have participated in the LLJG activities of Dwelling in the Word and Neighborhood Walks during which we often asked each other, “How has God been present in our lives, nudging us and inviting us?” These “God sightings” become more obvious to us when we take the time to listen to Him and to each other. This Advent season, the Liturgical Art Guild is providing paper stars as part of the Nave decoration. These will allow us to record in words, photos, or other images a God sighting which we have experienced. The stars will be on the side aisle shelves in the nave along with gold and silver pens and glue sticks. Please take time to record your God sighting and leave your star on the shelf to share with others.

MOST Christmas Tree Sale UpdateThe trees, wreaths, and garland orders have all gone out. But if anyone still needs any wreaths or garland, we have some extra and would love to sell them! Call 423-322-8445 to reserve yours today.

Also, starting this year, we included instructions on tree care in a plastic Ziploc bag with your tree. It gives you helpful tips on keeping your tree alive longer.

Each year, we hear from several of you how “this is the prettiest tree we have ever had.” So this year ,we want to start a photo album that we can share online in the future. If you would please send us pictures of the tree when you first put it up (before you decorate it) and then pictures after it is decorated, then we can save them and start a record of the trees and how they look for future sales. MOST looks forward to hearing from you and would like to wish you and your family the Merriest of Christmas celebrations!
