Little History of Christmas Traditions It is believed that St. Nicholas was born sometime

around 280 A.D. in in modern-day Turkey. Rudolph, “the most famous reindeer of all,” was the

product of Robert L. May’s imagination in 1939. The first official mention of December 25 as a holiday

honoring Jesus’ birthday appears in an early Roman calendar from 336 A.D.

Christmas tree is introduced by The German religious reformer Martin Luther (1483-1546)

Early Christians did not celebrate Christmas Not all countries celebrate December 25th as Christmas.

Some celebrate on January 6th and others on January 7th

Jesus in History Since Santa Claus is not the origin of Christmas Wonderful celebrations are not essence of Christmas

Then what is the real meaning of Christmas?

Our calendars make this known in the use of B.C and A.D B.C means Before Christ and A.D means Anno Domini means

(in the year of our Lord) referring to Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus story not only recorded in Bible but other historical books Josephus a Jewish Historian tells the birth, life and death.

‘Both Tacitus’ Roman historian and ‘Piny’ a Roman Governor of Bithynia a persecutor confirms the life of Jesus in their secular writings

Meaning of Christmas

Christmas can be broken into two parts Christ - mas CHRIST is the Greek translation of

Messiah MAS - is Latin word translation is “to

send “ when we word put together – “To send the Messiah”

Page 8: Christmas presentation slides dec 15

Who is Messiah (Jesus) God has created man and women and put them in

the Garden of Eden. They walked and talked and enjoyed the fellowship with God. When Adam and Eve sinned against God it broke that relationship.

In God’s love and Mercy He sent His own Son Jesus to earth in the form of a man to perfect sacrifice for the sins of the world, so that we might have forgiveness and relationship with God.

Jesus did not come from west, he was from the east. Born in Israel in the city of Bethlehem

Angles Announce to Mary and Joseph The Angel Gabriel appeared a young virgin girl named Mary and told

her that she would become pregnant and she was to name the baby “Jesus” which means “He Shall save His people from their sins” This was predicted long before Jesus birth by Prophets.

Mary become pregnant and carried a baby without a relation with man. In other words, Mary was conceived divinely. God’s angel appeared to Joseph and told (Joseph was engaged to marry Mary) “do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit”

How does the story of this famous event go To keep the birth of Jesus in secret – Joseph and Mary travelled from Nazareth to

Bethlehem before the day of birth of Jesus, they came to Bethlehem and delivered in an inn and since there was no room He wrapped in cloth and placed in a manger. The Shepherds were living out in the fields near by , then an angel of God appeared him and said “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people today the savior has been born He is Christ the Lord”. They hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and baby Jesus exactly as angel has said. Thousands of angels filled in the sky that night celebrating the birth of Jesus.

God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event. They knew this was no ordinary baby. The prophets had told of His coming hundreds of years before. The star stopped over Bethlehem just to mark the way for those who were looking for this special child.

The Purpose of Christmas is to

celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.
