Behind the Spray Gun
As some of you will know apart from editing the magazine in my spare time I also work in body repair and refinishing. Having decided to make a career out of “paint” I have refined my career choice down to restoring the paintwork on “interesting cars” rather than the general run of the mill family saloons. To date I have painted several MGs,
TVRs as well as carrying out blending repairs on several more modern vehicles. I have even stretched to painting a motorcycle fairing and panels. Since the last magazine I have been working on a beautiful Jaguar XJS. Although it only had minor blemishes
they were all over the front of the car (stonechips) as well as the door and rear quarters
(car park dings and several deep scratches). They certainly let the appearance of the Jaguar down and did not reflect the otherwise mint condition of this low mileage (16,000
miles) V12 big cat. It was definitely worth while getting the body work perfect.
My most recent project has been a more modern BMW M3 (e36). The BMW was showing its age and there were a few paint defects letting it down including scratches
dents and rust on the bonnet edge and a colour mismatched boot lid and spoiler. I ended up painting the bumpers, mirrors, front panel, bonnet, tops of the front wings front
wings, offside rear wing, boot and spoiler. The colour is a deep purple called 'technoviolett' and is specific to M3's.
EVENT BOOKINGThe Club's membership has exceeded 100 as I write with still more completed applications coming in. At the last event, The Pannier Market (November) we had over 50 members cars, probably more than we have had for quite a while. The upshot of this is that we must know which members are intending to support an event beforehand to ensure we have sufficient room. We are also hoping to take the club marquee and B-B-Q to more events this year.......so if you don't want to miss out on a bacon roll let us know beforehand so we can literally cater for you!
A new section in the magazine designed to increase oil pressure. One of the many topics that have been raised at Club Meetings is “what cars do the NDSCCC think should be at our events?First off as the name of the Club states we are a Sports and Classic Car Club rather than simply a Classic Car Club so that rather complicates matters as now we have to define 2 separate terms! :I mean would we turn away a new Ferrari? Is an MGB more acceptable than an MX5? We have one member with a modified Vauxhall Corsa that puts out around 375Bhp, he drag races it and it is arguably quicker than the Ferrari.........until he meets a corner! How old does a classic car need to be to be judged “classic”, what about modern classics like the Rover BRM or Ford Puma? Going even more “modern” for example an Abarth Fiat 500?There will always be a difference of opinion on the matter . To me at least the questions I would ask is “Is it an interesting car ?” , “is it a car that get's people talking in a nice way?”, “Is it a car that you would probably not see in the supermarket car park?”, “is the owner enthusiastic about their car?”So there you have it a new name for the Club.......The nice talking, enthusiastic, non supermarket and interesting car club.
