Our Christmas cookie gift baskets are the way to say “Happy Holidays!”
Available in many sizes!
Holiday Living Made easyWith so much on our plates between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortu-nately, there are many ways to save time and make the holiday season more manageable.
• If you don’t have plastic clips to hang lights around windows and to the eaves of your home, inexpensive clothespins will work just as well. If you’re concerned about the color of the wooden clips, paint them holiday hues before stringing the lights.
• Put a bath mat, rug-side down and rubber-side up, beneath your Christmas tree stand. This allows you to spin the tree as you hang lights and ornaments without damaging the floor underneath. It also makes it simple to undress the tree once the season is over. Use a tree skirt to hide the mat.
• Squeeze artificial tree portions into concrete form tubes. First wrap the tree portions in twine and then slip them into the concrete sleeves. Each tube can be stowed in attic or garage rafters, freeing up precious space.
• Use empty squirt bottles to make baking and cooking easier. Pancake and cookie batters can be squirted from the containers for less mess.
• Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shopping bag to keep the strands from getting tangled. Hang the bags from a hook in a garage or stack them in a storage bin.
• Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights to bannisters. They’re easy to assemble and will not damage Continued on Page 7.

the bannisters.
• A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in a craft room to neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply pull the length you need from the spool and cut for easy decorating.
• Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screws or glue. This pre-vents spills from reaching the floor while stabilizing the tree.
• Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nice change of pace from commercially produced paper or newsprint.
• Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand. Pat over fallen pine needles that accumulate around the tree. In hard-to-reach areas, wrap the tape around a broom or a floor sweeper.
• When traveling for the holidays, use a brightly colored suitcase or flashy tape to make your suitcase stand out from others at the airport.
• Place hardened brown sugar in a baking dish, cover it with a moist paper towel and either microwave it on high for 20-second intervals or place it in a 300 F oven for five minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easier to use the sugar to prepare your favorite holiday cookie recipes.
• Save plastic bread ties, which can be used to make tags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can be used to organize decorating components and to keep your place on a roll of tape.
• Measure the inside of your picture window and construct a wooden frame to its dimensions. Staple holiday lights to the frame and then easily slip the frame in and out of place each year.
• Hang a live wreath or some boughs of evergreen in your home to give it that fresh pine scent if you have an artificial tree.
• Color-code storage containers so you can easily find holiday decorations in the attic or basement.
• Pack for a holiday excursion using a collapsible clothing storage hanger for closets. Fold clothes on each fabric shelf and then collapse it into your suitcase. When you get to your destination, unfold and hang it in a closet so all of your clothes will be at the ready.
Make the holidays even more enjoyable with a variety of time-savers and clever tips.

Four Ways to Celebrate the Holiday Season affordably
(StatePoint) The holidays can be an expensive time for decorating, entertaining and shopping. Luck-ily, there are easy ways to save this holiday season, so you can spend more time celebrating and less time stressing over expenses.
Create. Typically, one of the largest expenses during the holiday season is gifts for friends and family. Instead of spending a fortune on store-bought presents, consider creating a DIY gift.
For example, you can place dry in-gredients inside a canning jar with an easy-to-follow recipe for sugar cookies or holiday pancakes for a creative, inexpensive gift.

Gift cards dressed up with a festive greeting card also makes a great present. Another option is to look for an auto-renewal pro-gram that allows you to give a practical gift like diapers, pet food and more to a recipient on a weekly or monthly basis.
Cook. One of the best parts about the holidays is baking delicious treats for the whole family to enjoy. A holiday favorite is fruit cake, so bake up something tasty like date nut bread using simple ingre-dients like flour, milk and eggs that can be bought from a discount retailer like Dollar General.
Clean. The holidays are often about spending time with family and friends, which means you could be doing a lot more entertaining than usual at your home. Get your home holiday-ready by making a plan for house-cleaning.
Straighten up before cleaning, so the process is expedited. To save on cleaning supplies, consider buying store brands, rather than name brand products. Be sure to also add the smells of the season with scented candles and electric warmers.
Celebrate. Adorning your home with holiday decorations can really get your family in the spir-it. Deals on dollar ornaments, festive garland, decorative trees and fun wreaths can help you to make your home festive without breaking the bank.
For more tips on holiday savings and DIY gift and decoration ideas, you can visit your local Dollar Gen-eral or go online to www.dollargen-eral.com.
By spending carefully, you can cele-brate affordably and in style, without breaking the bank.

(StatePoint) A holiday feast is one meal you’ll want to ensure includes flavorful, thoughtful dishes. Unfortu-nately, it’s one of the busiest times of year, and sorting through reci-pes, especially for dessert, may get pushed down the to-do list.
“There are a gazillion recipes in the world, but the lifesaving recipe for when times are crazy, that’s price-less,” says Anne Byrn, food writer and author of the new, “Anne Byrn Saves the Day! Cookbook.”
A collection of crowd-pleasing recipes from her network of friends and family, Byrn’s book features this recipe for Kentucky Brown Sugar Pie, perfect for a feast, as it takes only about 20 minutes to pull together, less time than a drive to the bakery and back -- and is more scrumptious than anything complicated to make or store-bought:Ingredients• 1 store-bought 9-inch pie crust, thawed if frozen• 1 cup packed dark brown sugar• 1/3 cup all-purpose flour• 1/4 teaspoon salt• 2 cups whole milk• 3 large eggs, at room temperature• 1 tablespoon salted or unsalted butter• 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract• 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar• 4 tablespoons granulated sugar

Directions• Let eggs come to room temperature, taking them out of the refrigerator half an hour before making the pie.• Transfer crust to glass pie pan if leaving it in aluminum foil pie pan. If it’s not a preformed crust, fit it into
a glass pie plate.• Bake pie crust following package directions until light brown. Let crust cool on rack while making filling.
Leave oven on, adjusting temperature if necessary to 400 degrees F.• Place brown sugar, flour, and salt in medium-size saucepan and stir to combine. Slowly whisk in milk.
Place pan over medium heat, stirring constantly until filling thickens and is bubbly, four to five minutes. Reduce heat to low and continue cooking filling until completely thickened, two minutes longer. Remove from heat.
• Separate eggs, placing yolks in a small bowl and whites in a medium stainless steel or glass bowl. Set egg whites aside. Beat egg yolks with fork to combine. Add 3 tablespoons of the hot filling to egg yolks and stir well to combine. Whisk the egg mixture into the saucepan of filling. Place pan over low heat and whisk until yolks are well combined and filling is thick, creamy, and smooth, about two minutes. Remove pan from heat and stir in butter and vanilla. Pour filling into baked crust.
• Make the meringue: Using an electric mixer, beat egg whites on high speed until frothy, one to two minutes. Add cream of tartar and continue beating on high. Gradually add granulated sugar. Beat egg whites until stiff and glossy and sugar is dissolved, four to five minutes.
• Pile spoonfuls of meringue on top of filling. Using a spatula, push meringue to the edge of crust to seal in filling. Smooth the top of the pie.• Bake until meringue is lightly browned, eight to ten min-utes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool about three hours before serving.
More information about the book can be found at www.Workman.com.

Gift exchange Do’s & Don’tsChristmas and New Year’s Eve are right around the cor-ner. That means neighborhoods, buildings and stores will soon be awash in holiday splendor. Social sched-ules will be full, and men and women everywhere will shuffle to complete their holiday shopping.
Grab bags are a staple of this season of giving, and the following are a few do’s and don’ts to ensure participa-tion in gift exchanges is fun and friendly for all involved.
DO set a gift amount limit. Holiday grab bags are more about having fun and exchanging a little something with friends
and family members than walking away with amaz-ing prizes. Establish a spending limit so everyone re-ceives a gift of roughly the same value and no one feels slighted or left out.
DON’T exceed the spending limit. It can be tempting to spend more to make your gift appear more impres-sive. But overspending defeats the purpose of the gift exchange. Grab bags typically are anonymous, so being overly generous will not win you any style points.
DO make it a game. Tossing gifts in a bag only to have others reach in and grab one is certainly effective. But the concept can be even more fun if you make a game out of it. Try passing wrapped gifts around in a circle to a holiday song. When the music stops, the gift you are holding is the one you open. Experi-ment with your own variations to make gift exchanges more fun.
DON’T let anyone see the gift you bring. The idea is to keep things as secretive as possible so as not to sway the se lec t ion of pres-ents.
DO ensure your gift is unisex. Unless you

know specifically that only men or women will be opening the presents, select items that will appeal to both genders. Food, gift cards, music, or home staples make great grab bag gifts.
DON’T forget to consider ages as well. Gift exchanges may include both children and adults, so include gifts that appeal to all ages when necessary. When the exchange has ended, al-low participants to swap gifts if they want to.
DO expect some grab bag gifts to be gag gifts. Such gifts are entertaining and may make up the majority of the grab bag gifts. Keep your sense of humor and you’re likely to enjoy grab bags a lot more.
DON’T regift items to use as grab bag picks. Should the person who gave you the gift partici-pate in the grab bag, he or she can trace that gift back to you and may be offended.
DO make sure everyone is aware that there will be a grab bag gift exchange, as there needs to be an equal number of gifts to participants so everyone gets a treat. Hosts may want to have a few extra wrapped gifts around just in case someone forgets to bring their contribu-tion.
Gift exchanges in the form of grab bags, auctions, swaps, and other games make for fun additions to holiday festivities. They also can be a part of any family or friends gathering to add excitement and entertainment to the occasion.

Holiday Gift Ideas for New ParentsMany parents fondly recall their first holiday season as a mom and dad. While youngsters may not remember much about their first Thanksgiving dinner with family or where their first Christmas present was placed under the tree, parents tend to cherish such memories, making their first holidays with children in tow very memorable.
Loved ones of new parents can take steps to make this holiday season even more special. The following are some gift ideas for holiday shoppers who want to make this sea-son even more memorable for the proud new parents in their lives.
• Photo album: Today’s new parents have more pictures and video of their bundles of joy than any previous gen-eration of moms and dads, as smartphones, tablets and other devices have made taking pictures much easier than in years past. But family members also have more access to such photos than ever before, making it easy to put together a special photo album of the new parents and their new child. Pull pictures from the parents’ social media accounts or make an album of the numerous photos you have no doubt received since your loved ones became parents. Parents likely don’t have time to make such albums, so your efforts will almost certainly be appreciated.
• Camcorder: Many smartphones are capable of taking video, but such devices are not ideal for shoot-ing longer home videos new parents will want to watch for years to come. An HD camcorder with sufficient in-ternal flash memory can allow new parents to take longer, higher quality videos with superior audio to those that are shot on smartphones. Such a camcorder may be costly for those shopping on a strict budget, but it’s a gift new parents are sure to love and utilize for years to come.
• Nursery sound system: New moms and dads are no doubt anx-

iously anticipating the day when the newest additions to their households sleep through the night. Help speed up the arrival of that glorious night with a nursery sound system that provides soothing sounds to create a perfect sleeping environment for newly born boys and girls. The results may not arrive overnight, but parents may soon find their lovable youngster is spending more of the wee hours of the morning sleep-ing and less time waking up mom and dad.
• Spa treatment: Not every gift you buy for the new parents in your life needs to focus on helping them cherish their first holiday season as parents. New parents tend to experience lots of exhaustion in their first few months on the job, but a spa treatment can be just the relaxing break they need from catering to their bundle of joys’ every need. Moms may prefer the full spa treatment, while dads may simply want a massage and some relaxing time in the steam room. Book a treatment for both mom and dad so they can spend some time relaxing during this hectic time of year.
New parents often cherish their first holiday season as moms and dads, and the right holiday gift can make that first holiday season even better.
Recipe: Pumpkin Spice MuffinsTry this two-ingredient (Yes! Only 2!) pumpkin spice muffin recipe for an easy, delicious holiday treat.
Just mix together the powder from a spice cake mix, ap-proximately 18 oz., and one 15 oz. can of pumpkin pie filling.
You can add raisins or nuts at this point.
Spoon mixture into lined muffin or cupcake tins, about 2/3 full. This mixture is pretty thick, so you can smooth out the tops if you want pretty muffins.
That’s it! You can dress these muffins up with some crumble top-ping, or if you want to add more nutrition, sprinkle on some chia seeds.

Five Ways Your Smartphone Can Help You Get Through the Holidays(StatePoint) Millions of Americans find themselves focused on planning the perfect party, juggling a packed social schedule and shopping for the best holiday deals.
Nearly seven in 10 smartphone users are “always looking to improve their productivity,” according to the results of a global study on productivity, conducted by BlackBerry.
Don’t make the mistake of underestimating your smartphone -- it can and should be more than just a way to text or email. It can be your secret weapon to sanity this holiday season.
To help, the experts at BlackBerry are sharing five savvy tips for using your smartphone to drive productiv-ity during this busy season.
Find Deals Ensure you’re getting the best deals on holiday shopping. Activate the geolocation feature on your smart-phone. Many brick-and-mortar retailers will be pushing special holiday discounts and offers to consumers shop-ping nearby or who have “checked in.” Additionally, apps such as Flipp allow you to browse the flyers and weekly ads of your favorite stores, highlight the best deals and clip items straight to your shopping list so you never miss out on a holiday sale.
The holidays can also mean a hectic travel season -- use travel apps to search hotels, find flights deals and track your itineraries.
Set Reminders Creating reminders is a seamless way to stay on top of day-to-day tasks that seem to double during the holidays. With apps such as SlickTasks you can boost productivity instantly and focus on what needs to get done by creat-ing and sorting tasks. You can then build-in reminders for each and easily keep track of what needs to get done.
Bring Along Your Personal Assis-tant Most smartphones are equipped with voice recognition technology, allowing you to jot down notes, search the Web, add calendar up-dates, place calls and send mes-sages, without typing. These “as-sistants” can prove highly useful during the holiday season.

Driving from store to store looking for the perfect gift? BlackBerry Assistant can be activated via Bluetooth and can detect when you’re in the car and therefore unable to type. The assistant will take action based on your voice commands, helping you multi-task on-the-go.
Don’t Be Camera Shy Smartphone camera technology has vastly improved over the past few years. For example, the new BlackBerry Passport has a 13-megapixel camera and is capable of taking the same high-quality photos as a traditional point and shoot camera. With just the click of a button, and the help of photo editing tools like Photo Studio, you can take beautiful photos of the holiday party and share in-stantly with family and friends across social networks.

Holidays and Healthy eatingThe holidays are upon us, and so are all the plentiful, festive foods that make this time of year so wonderful. With all of the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it can be tough to keep your family eating healthy as so much of the food going around will be full of processed ingredients that are high in sugar, low in fiber, and less than healthy.
In an effort to eat healthier during this holiday season, and to get ahead on the coming New Year’s resolutions, here’s an easy solu-tion for healthier holiday eating.
Focus on Whole Grains. Whole grains are grains that have not been refined and therefore, still have the bran and germ. The germ is rich in vitamins, minerals, and unsaturated oils while the bran provides a healthy dose of fiber.
Avoid Refined Foods. Grains that are white are generally refined. These include; white flour, white rice, and any white breads. Refined means the grains have had their bran and germ removed in the milling process. Sometimes these breads also have many additives. It’s a good rule of thumb to look at the label and make sure you are able to pronounce every ingredient! What is sodium stearoyl lactylate and azodicarbonaminde? These are additives and preservatives found in some grocery store breads, whether whole grain or refined.
To maximize the nutrients in grains, it is important to have fresh milled wheat. As soon as a wheat kernel is ground, the nutrients start to deteriorate. When wheat is used within 48 hours of milling it retains its nutritional value and fla-vor. Flour loses 40% of its vitamin content in the first 24 hours after milling and 85-90% after 2-3 days.
Adding whole grains to your everyday diet, as well as your holiday menu can be as simple as making a few substitu-tions to your favorite family recipes. Savory and sweet, there are lots of ways to incorporate whole grains into your diet in ways you might not have considered,
* Make whole grain pancakes for breakfast and use fresh fruit instead of syrup * Take advantage of whole grain bread when making French toast * Stuff your Turkey with whole grain breads * Make homemade croutons from leftover whole grain bread * Buy only fresh whole grain rolls * Use quinoa or brown rice instead of white rice * Add whole-grain flour or oatmeal when making cookies or other baked treats * Sweeten with local honey instead of refined sugars
Here is a list of whole grains you can ad to your recipes. Foods labeled with the words “multi-grain,” “stone-ground,” “100% wheat,” cracked wheat,” “seven-grain,” or “bran” are usually not whole-grain products.
Studies indicate that a diet rich in whole grains and low in refined grains can help people shed pounds and maintain a healthy weight. Eating whole-grain foods lowers risk of obesity, lowers cholesterol levels, decreases chances of developing type 2 diabetes & heart disease, and reduces risk of having a stroke.
U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommend three servings of whole grains everyday. Whole grains have phytochemicals and valuable antioxidants that are not found in fruits and vegetables. They also have B vitamins, Vitamin E, magne-sium, iron and fiber.
So embrace your inner chef, read labels diligently and start adding whole grains to your dishes this season and make for a happy holiday!
Stop by your local Great Harvest Bakery and try our signature whole wheat breads, made with wheat berries ground daily in the bakery. This ensures your bread is rich in flavor, moist and packed with nutrients. The freshly milled whole wheat flour is blended with ingredients close to nature, like honey. You’ll taste the difference. Great Harvest is also baking up legendary holiday sweets and breads perfect for your holiday table, parties, and for gifts for loved ones, colleagues, customers and clients. Let us provide you with fresh, handcrafted products and gifts this year. Thank you for the honor of making your holidays sweeter, healthier and less stressful!

Protect Yourself Thieves are working overtime during the holidays. When it comes to your smartphone, make sure all security features are enabled. This includes password protection, as well as activating app permissions, particularly on your banking apps.
For BlackBerry users, apps such as BlackBerry Protect will safeguard users in the case of a lost or stolen phone by allowing users to remotely lock, locate or wipe their smartphone, ensuring sensitive information remains out of reach from potential thieves.
With the right tech tools and strategies, you can get your to-dos done in record time this holiday season.
Strategies for Last Minute ShoppersHoliday shoppers tend to fall into three distinct camps. There are those people who have com-pleted all of their shopping and wrapping even before November ends. Others shop in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Finally, many people wait until the last minute, and such shoppers are the ones seen rushing from store to store on December 24.
Waiting until the last possible second to purchase a gift may not prove much of a problem when shopping for birthday gifts. But come the holiday season, such procrastination may find shoppers perusing limited inventories and dealing with other
frantic procrastinators.
But even those shoppers who still plan to put off their holiday shopping can make the most of such stalling this holiday season.
• Consider eGift cards. Many retailers offer digital gift cards that can be emailed in a matter of minutes. Purchase the card from the online retailer and email the redemption code to the gift recipient. Time the email to arrive on Christmas morning or include all of the necessary information in a holiday card. • Ship to store. Some shoppers like the convenience of ship-to-store services. This enables a person
to purchase a gift online but avoid shipping charges by having the item made available at a store location. In-stock items are typically ready the day of purchase, and this helps you avoid crowds and impulse buys, as online purchases are typically avail-able at special pick-up locations in the store that allow online shoppers to skip long lines at the registers.
• Avoid gimmick gifts. Skip the “as seen on TV” aisle at the store or trendy infomercial gifts. Such gifts may suggest to their recipients that you waited until the last minute to buy the gifts and then really didn’t

have any good ideas.
• Expect extra charges and factor such charges into your budget. Procrastinating may work for your schedule, but expect to pay more if you shop online and require shipping. You will probably need to ex-pedite shipping if you expect to have gifts delivered on time. Verify the delivery date before making any purchases. Paying more for shipping may outweigh the hassle of driving to store after store searching for gifts. Online retailers like Amazon may even offer selective delivery on Christmas Eve.
• Check store hours. Some stores offer extended shopping hours to meet the needs of last-minute shop-pers. You may be able to visit early morning or late at night to skip the crowds. Certain department stores time sales with these extended hours, such as “early bird” or “night owl” specials, so you may even be rewarded for procrastinating.
• Shop smaller retailers. One way to avoid the hassles that often come with holiday shopping is to patron-ize smaller, independent shops. Chances are the crowds will be smaller at these shops and you may have access to a more unique selection of gifts than you would find at the nearby mall.
