    THE HOMELEIGH CAT RETIREMENT VILLAGE

For many cat lovers, particularly the elderly, worrying about the future of their much loved felines after they are no longer able to care for themcan be very depressing. Over the years, A.A.P.S. has always tried to help. However, it was obvious that the Shelter environment was far fromideal as a permanent residence.

It was with this in mind that the idea of a cat retirement home evolved into the Homeleigh Cat Retirement Village, and in May, 1993, the first

    residents moved in.

One of the most satisfying comments that human visitors to the Village make is, "Oh, it's just like a real house!" and that is exactly how it wasdesigned to be. Because most of the cats who move into the Village are stressed to some degree by the upheaval of losing their owner andhome, it is important that the Village provide an environment similar to the one that they have left behind.

There is a cosy sitting-room with chairs, baskets, floor rugs and, most importantly, a heater (which is very popular with our residents). The kitchenhas the usual furnishings, including a large cupboard full of the residents' favorite food and special treats. All tastes are catered for!

The fully enclosed garden provides a safe and interesting area for the cats. There are bushes which provide shade and hiding places, and lots ofspace to relax on sunny days.

The Retirement Village is best suited to older cats which require a safe, loving and comfortable environment to live in once their owners are nolonger able to care for them. The residents are looked after by experienced and caring people, including our full-time veterinarian.

To qualify as a resident in the Village, a cat should be at least 8 years old, and its owner must no longer be able to care for it (e.g. becausehe/she needs to go into a nursing home, or has died). The cat must have a satisfactory health status (free from feline AIDS and Leukaemia). Wealso need to be sure that the cat will integrate into the existing group within the Village. This is usually not a problem, as the cats are givenample opportunity to settle into their new environment.

Currently, a donation/bequest of $6000 is required to cover expenses incurred during the remaining lifetime of the cat. A formal agreement(copies of which are available at the Shelter) needs to be completed by the cat's owner or representative before the cat can take up residence.

My dear beautiful friend Ziggy passed away on Tuesday. He was with me through thick and thin for 12 beautifulyears. My darling dog chose me at the pound all thoseyears ago at the Keysborough AAPS.

Hes been everywhere, gallery openings, pubs, picnics(where he could have possibly stolen cheese) friends andfamilys houses on overnight stays, Art play where hehung out with kids and showed off his tricks. He was a

gentle soul and wonderful with children. From Angus making him into a Ziggy sandwich with thedoona, to a three year old Evie taking him for a walk andtelling the fearful other kids that hes alright, hes a goodboy. Just the other week she was telling some little girlsthat she had a brother too.

A dog brother called Ziggy. He was my runningcompanion, early morning runs where we'd charge over

pavements and fields. His last hours were spent listening to Bach CelloConcertos and giving me cuddles and eating ice creamand of course cheese. I am bereft, adrift. The house issilent but my heart is full of you, Ziggy.

You made my heart smile - my Ziggy-bubblina, ZigueZigue Sputnick, Ziglette, my mate.

Thank you AAPS for providing shelter to unwanted

    animals.

You guys gave me my Ziggy.

dough bounces back when touched.5. Cut out shapes with desired cookie cutter and refrigerate.

Dogs go wild over liver, and small amounts of it provide some necessary nutrients. The fresh cranberries also assist urinary function. Give these to reward good behaviour.

Thank you to all those who contributed to this section of enews, again I had a fantastic response from many AAPS adoptees. Enjoy thissection as I hope it gives a sense of success to a tough situation and provides motivation that one person cant change the world for all

animals but you can change the world for one animal at a time.

NINAWe adopted our beloved "Nina" on the14th July 2014 and it was love at firstsight for the both of us! Her profile read"everything is a game to Nina" and it

    couldn't be more true!

She's now enjoying life in St Kilda, walking each day to the Pier, runningalong the beach, greeting every puppyand person that crosses our path, playing in the sand, rolling in the grass, sleeping in (our bed!), chasing herfootball (she's a proud Hawkssupporter), barking at the pigeons,

driving to country Victoria to visit hergrandparents every other weekend - thelist goes on!

We cannot thank AAPS enough fornurturing her in her time there and forallowing us to give her an opportunity toexperience a loving home. She's now apart of our lives forever and we couldn'tbe happier!

Warmest regards,Andrew, Maree & Nina xoxo

We adopted Buttons when she was about 3 months old from an animal shelter. She was in a cage by herself and we were told she was very timid, but somethingabout her just caught my eye. We looked at a few other cats because my partnerreally wanted a boy but I begged him to just look at her. We asked to hold her and

she instantly flopped into his arms and looked up at him as if to say Take mehome!' and she was sold! She was the cuddliest, cutest, most clumsy little kittenwed ever seen. Watching her was hysterical. Buttons really enjoys when you takeher in the car and took many trips with us when my mother lost her licence and wehad to drive her to work and back. Unfortunately it doesnt happen as often nowbecause Im working and dont have as much free time. She wedges her way intoevery activity we have planned.

Buttons never learned how to hiss and instead when she's upset she cries. (Itbreaks our heart), she's just such a sweet little angel. Bringing Buttons home was

the best decision Jamie and I had ever made, it made our relationship strongerand made our house a home.

    BUTTONS

Recently my beautiful animal friend Ziggy (a bullterrier/Dalmatian cross) passed away. He was a rescuedog from the AAPS about 12 years ago and we decidedto visit the AAPS to see if a new animal friend would

choose us. Im a true believer that dogs choose you andBrick (weve renamed him thanks to my daughter)

definitely chose us. Hes a beautiful 5 and a half year

old Lab/kelpie who was given up because of a familybreakdown. (Which just upsets me so that people canso easily give up animals - people that love soshallowly). Im pleased to say hes loving it with us. Wego for runs down the creek, jump on the tramp and playball. Hes wonderful. And so is the work that you guys

do at the AAPS. Thanks again.

    Hi there,

I just wanted to share some photos of Diesel who I adopted last Sunday. Diesel issuch a good boy and has settled in really well. Hes starting to come out of his shellmore and more and has such a cheeky but sweet nature. He loves our lunch timewalks, (and passing out on the outdoor chairs as soon as we get back home). Theexcitement in his face when I attempt jogging is priceless. When I slow down helooks at me to say Come on!! It's great as I now have a personal trainer!! I could nothave asked for a better match, and I thank the staff for helping me chose the right

He loves our 2 year old son and sleeps with him at nighttime. He gets along well with the dogs and is all round verypleasurable. We still can't believe it took him 6 months tofind a home, but we believe he chose us!

I have attached a few photos of him enjoying the sun.

Life has been really good with our family. We are spoilt so much. We

Merlin (AAPS name "Lucas") was adopted in February 2014 andrecently celebrated his first birthday - with cake, presents and aparty. Merlin has made himself at home with his new bestfriends Oscar (cat, nearly 15 years) and Callie (StandardSchnauzer, 4 years). I never would have thought that a kittencould be the catalyst for so much change in our house. He hasgiven our old man a new lease on life and gets him out of bed inthe morning for their daily rumble on the kitchen floor. The dog

has a best friend, and they can regularly be heard chasing eachother around the house or seen sharing their food.

The biggest change has been for our 7 year old son. Nothingteaches a child the important life lessons of unconditional lovequite like caring for a furkid. It was very upsetting for a sensitive

    MERLIN & FAMILY

child to be told that we can only adopt one cat, as leaving all the others behind was distressing. As we told him, we can't change theworld by saving every cat (and dog), but we can change HIS world (for this one cat). Despite meeting many lovely cats and kittens,Merlin chose us - there was absolutely no doubt, he had found "his person". Whenever our son is upset Merlin is there, to comfort him

and cuddle him at night. My son has now become an outspoken advocate for animal rights and recently attended his firstAnimalsMatter (Oscar's Law) rally. If we can educate the next generation, perhaps the world can become a better place.

12 months ago we adopted Sally from your shelter.I saw her listing just by chance and wasn't actually lookingfor another dog for myself but for a friend.

When I saw Sally's photo I just knew she needed to be a partof our family.

We are so in love with our Sally, and her fur sister Jemimaand her are inseparable.

Thank you for allowing us to adopt her.Jackie and Rowan

In 1999 we adopted our beloved Zoey, a 4 month old Sheltiex Collie cross from the Keysborough shelter. We were at theshelter to drop off an abandoned cat that kept finding its way toour house (it got a good home) and while there we found our Zo.She had been dumped along with her six siblings and thankfullyrescued by AAPS. I had lost my old dog only a month earlier

and did not want to take her home, but I'm so glad my parentsinsisted because she's been my best friend eversince. She's been an amazing part of our family and I can'timagine what we will do without her.

She's great with our other animals, our two cats Trixie and Jinx(also both AAPS rescues) and our other dog Toby, not tomention our new bunny rabbit Baloo who hasfallen in love with her and follows her all over the house.Regards,Sarah

    LOUIE

My husband and I adopted our Jack Russellx Staffy Louie in 2007.

We were on the lookout for a smaller dogand had always been taken by Jack Russells

in the past. When I visited your shelter Ipassed what looked like an empty compoundbut the tag on the gate said Louie and thathe was a 2 year old Jack Russell x.

I must have said Louie out loud because thenext thing I saw was this beautiful little facepeep out from behind the kennel and I wasinstantly in love with him.

When I brought my husband back that

afternoon to view him he must have sensed that we were a perfect fit because he stuck to us like glue and the lady who was assistingus called him our shadow.

We never did get the full story behind Louies past, but he came to us with a terrible skin condition and almost no trust in the outsideworld, so we knew he hadnt been treated well, but after only a couple of days at home with us he settled in and everyone who knowshim now nicknames him King Louie as he runs our house.

His soft and sooky Staffy nature crossed with his fun loving and eager Jack Russell trait makes him our perfect pet. We could nothave asked for a more wonderful dog, and thank our lucky stars every day that we found him, and that he chose us.

Thank you AAPS for saving our boy and allowing us to share his life with us, our son.

Hes going on 10 and out vet consistently dubs him dog of the century at his check ups due to his wonderful health and vitality.Heres to the next 10 years with him!Kindest Regards,

    Sarah
