Gospel Reflection Nativity of the Lord
Dec 25th mdash John 11-5 9-14
Jesus is the Son of God the Messiah In todayrsquos Gospel we learn that the ldquoWord was Godrdquo because Jesus shows us who God is for us
When do you most know that Jesus is with you
Solemnity of Mary
Jan 1st mdash Luke 216-21
At the time of the birth of Jesus Mary saw and heard many astonishing things This Gospel from Luke tells us that Mary ldquotreasuredrdquo or remembered all these things in her heart Then Luke describes how Jesus received His name from Mary and Joseph
How do you feel knowing that Scripture tells us that
God says ldquoI have called you by name you are

Smiling
With a goal of serving 100 families at Christmas St Vincent de Paul began a solid month of work on Thanksgiving Day and Mother Na-ture made it difficult at every turn We started with torrential rain on Thanksgiving and ended with ice and frigid temperatures on Decem-ber 17th On December 11th Father Rodel talked to us about smiling more so I thought back to what made me smile during this time It certainly wasnrsquot the weather It was my fellow Vincentians and the Holy Family parishioners that made me smile many times during the month Firstly our annual appeal letter was generously answered and on Thanksgiving Day the parishioners carried 1259 lbs of food to the Parish Center in torrential rain and did not complain I always smile at the kindness of Holy Family parishioners The annual food drive began in rain and ended in ice Once again I had to think back to what made me smile Putting bags on doors is a tedious job and one day I looked out my living room window and saw a lone man putting bags on doors It was Ed Marihart all by himself and taking the job very seriously It made me smile He told me later that he had enjoyed his walk in my area That really made me smile When it came time to pick up the bags of food I smiled because a few people were so generous with their time and did so much extra work We were so impressed with Sara Kellyrsquos sweet smile as she picked up 2 routes Bill and Marilyn Powers really stepped up and did 4 routes As letter carriers will tell you that is a lot of stairs Having been a teacher for 32 years I am always very aware of the parents setting good examples for their children and I saw some fan-tastic examples of good parenting Every time I turned around there were the Gwyns Brunelles and Greenlees working along side their children Parents and children working together to help others makes for a lot of smiles I found myself smiling a lot because of the children of Holy Family School It started with the upper graders taking a route and putting out bags Their knees are in a lot better shape than mine Zoe and Rachel Dickinson assured me that sorting food is fun and challeng-ing The 5th Graders harvested the last of the squash from the gar-den and brought it to SVDP with big smiles The Kindergarten col-lected cans of food brought it to us weighed it sorted it and left eve-ry Vincentian smiling We were a little short handed one day and David Cass asked to be excused from study hall and moved box after box across Celebration Hall Each box weighed about 25 lbs and he was sorry when he had to leave to go on Safety Patrol The future of SVDP looks good Finally two people really make me smile every year Joyce Bell and Jon Pienovi are very special people Each year Joyce gives up a Saturday to cook and serve our workers pizza and of course she cleans up after us Jon Pienovi gave us a truck load of fresh produce at no charge which is a great treat for our clients It also allows us to spend more money on rents and utilities Joyce and Jon make the world a better place The weather almost reduced me to tears but Holy Family parishion-ers and Vincentians made me smile I canrsquot name every single per-son who helped because it would take up too much room but know you are greatly appreciated Thank you on behalf of all those less fortunate in our city and keep giving people a reason to smile Penny OrsquoConnell Holy Family SVDP

Did you know that Holy Family Catholic School works hard to maintain a meaningful connection with the parishion-ers of Holy Family Each class is assigned a group of ldquoPrayer Partnersrdquo a program that pairs students with members of the parish community Each day students pray for their assigned Prayer Partners Around the holidays students also make Advent cards to share the holiday spirit with Prayer Partners This tradition has helped build relationships between the par-ish and school To all our Prayer Partners we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Thanks for keeping the students of Holy Family in your prayers
