ORCHESTRAL WORKS

Gala from Berlin 2013Antonín Dvořák: Slavonic Dance, Op.46, No.8 • Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 3 • Paul Hindemith: Symphonic Dance No. 3 • Antonín Dvořák: Slavonic Dances, Op. 72 in B Major, E minor and C Major • Aram Khachaturian: 4 Dances from Gayaneh (Dance Swords, Dance of the Young Kurds, Gayaneh’s Adagio, Lesginka) • Johannes Brahms: Hungarian Dances No. 1 in G minor and No. 3 in F MajorBerliner Philharmoniker • Sir Simon rattle conductorlang lang piano For 2013’s year-end celebration we can hear two of the most popular Hungarian Dances by Brahms as well as three of the Slavonic Dances by Dvořák, both primitive and elegant rhythms from the geographical center of Europe, so rich in musical tradition. Not quite as well-known are the melodies from the ballet Gayaneh by the Soviet Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian – but hold on: at least one piece from this work – the famous “Sabre Dance” – is familiar to any music fan! An exciting counterpoint to this spirited musical titbit is the third movement of Paul Hindemith’s Symphonic Dances. The programme of the Berliner Philharmoniker New Year’s Eve concert is complemented with Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. The Chinese pianist Lang Lang, soloist in this work, is a truly exceptional artist who is returning to the stage of Berlin’s Philharmonic Hall. His brilliant, sensitive piano playing – which always sounds spontaneous despite all his artistry – equally wows musician colleagues and the public.Live recording from the Philharmonie, Berlin

upcoming Gala from Berlin 2014Live signal available: Wednesday, 31 December 2014, 5:30 p.m. CET

Jean-Philippe Rameau: Suite from Les Indes galantes • W.A. Mozart: Piano Concerto in A major K. 488 • Zoltán Kodály: Háry János Suite (Excerpts) • Brahms: Hungarian Dances • Antonín Dvořák: Slavonic Dances (Selection)Berliner Philharmoniker • Sir Simon rattle conductormenahem Pressler piano Pianist Menahem Pressler has made recording and interpretation history for more than half a century with the Beaux Arts Trio, which he founded in 1955. The grand seigneur of piano gave his long-overdue debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker in January 2014. The audience hailed Pressler with a standing ovation; the press raved about the “masterful exhilaration” of his musicality and his “unique tone, as full as it was intimate”. For his appearance at this year’s New Year’s Eve Concert in Philharmonie, Berlin, Pressler has selected Mozart again: the Piano Concerto in A major, K. 488, composed during Mozart’s prime in Vienna and one of his most beautiful contributions to the genre. The New Year’s Eve concert opens with Sir Simon Rattle conducting music by Rameau: a suite of instrumental pieces from the opéra-ballet Les Indes galantes show French Baroque music at its finest. Following the intermission, the musicians ring in the New Year in a lively way with Slavic strains: an orchestral suite from Zoltán Kodály’s charming folk opera Háry János as well as a selection from the popular Slavonic Dances by Antonín Dvořák.Live recording from the Philharmonie, Berlin

This pre-Christmas atmosphere is captured in sound and image: Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland (BWV 61), a cantata for the First Sunday of Advent, is recorded here alongside two cantatas for Christmas Day: Christen, ätzet diesen Tag (BWV 63), and Jauchzet, frohlocket, auf, preiset die Tage (BWV 248 I) – the first cantata from Bach’s famous Christmas Oratorio. The choir and vocal soloists are accompanied by the Barockorchester L’Arco who use instruments that would have been used in Bach’s day.

He also puts in passages of Gregorian chant, sequences from contemporary music by György Kurtág, Thomas Jahn and Arvo Pärt, and readings of poems by Paul Celan. Mozart’s music becomes a mould in which Scholz casts his choreography. – A truly impressive requiem; a choreographic revelation.

In the 1890s, his sister, Adelheid Wette, had written a libretto based on the Grimm fairy tale, and asked her brother to set it to music as a Christmas entertainment for her children. Later, Engelbert and Adelheid decided to turn this modest home project into a full-scale opera. Hansel and Gretel, premiered on December 23, 1893 at Weimar, was an instant hit and remains an everlasting masterpiece. The composer Richard Strauss, who was the assistant conductor for the premiere, called it “a masterwork of the first rank.”

Bach. Only a pianist with such an exceptional classical technique and deft improvisatory skill could have nurtured such a vision. He founded the Play Bach Trio, which used Bach’s compositions as the basis for jazz improvisation. The trio immediately caught the public imagination. In their live appearances, tours and concerts, plus a succession of recordings built on the cornerstone of four albums made between 1960 and 1963, Loussier’s group achieved the breakthrough to popular commercial success enjoyed by only a select few jazz musicians. In fifteen years, the trio sold over six million albums! On July 28th 2004, the day of Bach’s 254th anniversary of death, the Jacques Loussier Trio perform a special concert at the famous St. Thomas Church of Leipzig - the city where Bach composed many of his most famous works.

The pianist’s quirky humour is reflected in the rather ambiguous name of the ensemble, “Andrea Barca”. Schiff is fond of telling the story of Signor Barca. Apparently he was a legendary page-turner for Mozart in Salzburg, but in the course of the centuries all traces of his subsequent career in Vienna have unfortunately been lost. In the meantime, a fully-fledged partnership has developed from these light-hearted beginnings. Schiff appears regularly with “his” Cappella, conducting from the keyboard. The musicians’ personal friendship makes for unforced, captivating performances of superb quality. One landmark in this partnership is the series of concerts at the Teatro Olimpico, Europe’s oldest existing theatre. Designed almost 450 years ago by Andrea Palladio, it is a very special setting for Mozart’s magnificent D minor piano concerto. Schiff precedes the work with the Don Giovanni overture, leading on into the concerto without a break. Live recording from the Teatro Olimpico, Italy
