y office on the first floor overlooks the main arterial passage of the
hospital. One window allows me a good view of the flood of people
coming into hospital during morning hours. The other window offers
me a vantage view of the most traumatic scenes at the accident and
emergency services. When I intermittently look out through either, it never
ceases to amaze me as to how pressing the health needs of the country
are. For the hundred and fifteenth year in succession, the Christian
Medical College, Vellore is privileged to be part of this huge task of
providing healthcare to India.
M
What began as a one-bed clinic in response to the needs of local women and
children in Vellore, has grown to its present size and form in response to the
enlarging needs of the nation. A recent visitor to CMC, who is a strategic
management expert, observed that CMC Vellore is the largest Christian
organization in India. It is undeniable that CMC continues to grow, bringing
in thousands of people seeking healthcare.
God continues to be good to us as an institution. Contained in this supplement
is our latest profile. The patient load has gone up and our numbers are staggering.
I can only thank God for the way He has led us through another year. I stand in
deep appreciation to all my staff, at all levels, for their deep commitment to the
mission of our institution.
The numbers are staggering and our clinicians have coped with the pressures
of patient care. The laboratories have worked overtime to bring about rapid
test results. New services have been added. There are a larger number of
people from the northern and western parts of India. The space crunch
continues to be acute but we hope to release some space with the
re-organization plans in place.
Trauma and other non-communicable diseases challenge us. The disease
profile change in our country is calling us to change our service delivery style.
More day-care, more emergency and intensive care is what is needed. We intend
to respond to that in the coming year. We are hopeful that our initiative to offer
high-quality trauma care will find favour with the state and central governments.
CMC has received recognition for its best practices and community health,
from various organizations. Many of our faculty are recipients of prestigious
awards and honours. We continue the position of excellence endorsed by
several media agencies.
I want to thank Dr. Abraham Peedicayil and the Promotion Office staff for the
wonderful compilation of facts and figures which offers the reader a snapshot of the
work done in CMC.
