Holy Orders (Ordination), and the Role of a Deacon

1. How did the idea of priesthood develop?- In general- In Christianity2. What is ordination (Holy

Orders)? 3. How does it change a

person?

Priesthood developed because in all civilisations, people were needed who would be responsible for worship, making sacrifices to God, and handing on religious teaching. Sometimes these people were given special authority. They might even live apart from the rest of the community.

Jesus chose 12 men to be his disciples. He sent them out to preach as apostles. After his death, they became responsible for handing on his teaching – healing, preaching and baptising.

Men who feel a special calling to serve God and God’s people can take the Sacrament of Holy Orders. They can be ordained as either deacons, priests or bishop. In ordination, the man receives a special spiritual character – to act in the place of Christ.

The Early Christian Church

Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles.

All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need.

Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.

How is the life of the early Apostles linked to the lifestyle of men in Holy Orders today?

**How do these activities reflect the life of Jesus?
