Dear Church Family, April, 2019

At the heart of our Christian faith is the story of a man who dies on a cross and

on the third day is raised again to life.

The story begins on the evening before the man’s death when he gathers with his

followers. First, the man reaffirms his love for them. Then, he tells them that the

bread and the cup of the meal they are sharing represent his body and blood which

will be broken and shed for them, for the forgiveness of their sin.

The Maundy Thursday Service in the Sanctuary on Thursday, April 18 at

6:30pm celebrates this event

The story continues with the crucifixion of the man. We struggle with the cross.

We prefer the more appealing aspects of following the man - whether it’s to a party

where he changes water to wine, to a sunlit beach where he preaches from a boat,

or to a breezy hillside where he feeds thousands. But to the cross? Who wants to go

there? Yet, go we must for it is at the cross that we recognize the price he paid for

our sin.

The Good Friday Service in the Sanctuary on Friday, April 19 at 6:30pm helps us

come to the cross of Jesus.

Many people believed that the death of the man ended his story. He had

apparently failed in his mission and the God he claimed as his Father had

seemingly rejected him. They were mistaken! On the third day God raised the man

from the dead. God’s act restored life to the man, and through the man life will be

restored to all who are dead in their sin. Come celebrate God’s new life, and invite a

friend who may also want to hear the Good News of God’s love for them.

Two Easter Services are offered on Sunday, April 21:

9:00am Contemporary Easter Service in our Sanctuary.

11:00am Traditional Easter Service in our Sanctuary.

Join us for Easter Brunch:

Between the Easter services, beginning at 10:00am in Fellowship Hall, the Mem-

bership and Fellowship ministry teams of our church will serve Easter Brunch.

Join us and enjoy the Christian community made possible by Christ’s

resurrection.

Child Care is offered during the Thursday, Friday and Sunday Services.

The Lord is Risen!

Jumble Cookies 2 C. pecan halves 3 C. blanched whole almonds 2 C old fashioned oats (you can partially grind to a coarse meal, if preferred.) 1 ½ C flour 1 tsp baking powder 1 tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 1 C white sugar ½ C brown sugar 1 C. butter, room temperature

Place nuts on cookie sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375. Bake, stir occasionally, for 7 minutes or until they begin to have a toasted aroma. Cool completely and then chop into coarse pieces, set aside. Combine dry ingredients and set aside. Cream the sugar and butter until well combined. Add the eggs and vanilla to the creamy mixture and mix until completely incorporated. Add the flour mixture 1 cup at a time until incorporated. Then stir in the 5 cups of chopped, roasted nuts. Then, stir in:

2 C chocolate chips 3 C dried fruit – medjool dates (cut in small pieces), raisins, cranberries – or combination of. You could also use other dried fruits. If fruit is really dry you can soak them in juice or liqueur, drain and squeeze excess liquid before adding to cookie mixture. You may have to combine the mixture with your hands because it’s very thick and dense at this point. Drop 1 ½” balls (or medium cookie scoop – 2 tbsp) onto ungreased cookie sheet, 1 ½” apart. I pressed them down slightly; you may want to leave them mounded. Bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes.

The 24-Hour Prayer Vigil begins directly after the Maundy Thursday service on April 18th and continues until the beginning of the Good Friday service of worship. Taking place in the sanctuary, it is a time to spend an hour with God, praying, worshiping, and thinking about the life, ministry and sacrifice of Jesus and his deep love for each of us. Prayer cards are at hand, filled out by our church members, suggesting people and situations to pray for. Reading material is also available. A Prayer Vigil sign-up sheet will be at the Welcome Center starting March 31st. It is our hope that at least one person will be in the sanctuary praying each hour. You may park in the church parking lot, enter Fellowship Hall through the back (east) door, and go up the ramp to the sanctuary. Security is provided during the dark hours of the Vigil.

2019 Stewardship Update

Your Stewardship Committee thanks all of you (again) for your generous giving and support in response to last year’s campaign. For 2019 God has blessed Congregational Presbyterian with an increase in pledges compared to the prior year. Our Stewardship theme this year is, Gratefulness… “All things were created by Him, and for Him” from Paul’s letter, Col 1:16 (KJV) Many ideas come to mind with this verse – the primary message is that God, our Heavenly Father is THE source of every blessing we receive throughout our life to-gether. We look forward to the sermon messages from Pastors Steve and McLane later this year about stewardship and generosity. This committee is here to serve you in all aspects of stewardship, and we welcome your ideas and suggestions for the coming year.

Your Stewardship servants, Kathy Johnson, Judy Rooney, Vicky Boubel, Tom Boubel (Chairman)

WIRED: Middle school ministry (6-8th grades) Join us on April 7th, 14th & 28th!

Sunday evenings from 5-6:30pm is all about middle school madness! Join us for food (sometimes thrown), faith, and fun with friends. At Wired we believe that God is calling each of us to follow Him with our whole lives. We want to explore what that means together– don’t miss it! *We will be taking a break on Easter.

COMBINED YOUTH DINNER: Join us on April 7th, 14th & 28th!

Sundays at 6:30pm between Wired and Yippy, all students share a meal and conversation together in Fellowship Hall. These meals are generously provided by small groups in our congregation. All good things come from God, and food is a good thing!

YIPPY: High school ministry (9-12th grades)

Join us on April 7th, 14th & 28th!

Do you want to know more about your faith and how it impacts your daily life? Are you looking for a place to grow in your faith with a group of friends? Yippy is our high school ministry that provides a place for students to gather and grow together. We meet on Sunday evenings from 7-8:30pm for games, worship, and fellowship together. It’s always a blast and a little crazy! We would love to have you join us! *We will be taking a break on Easter.

THIS SEMESTER: In our groups, we are exploring the concept of abundance of life that can be found in Jesus. We find that this can factor into relationships, work ethic, spiritual gifts, and how we respond to the events that shape our lives. We are looking at how this effects us both as middle school and high school aged Jesus-followers, and how it can apply uniquely to our individual lives.

GIRLS NIGHT Wednesday Evenings from 5:30-7pm Both high school and middle school ladies are welcome!

We begin our evenings together at 5:30pm with a congregational shared meal in Fellowship Hall. After that, in our smaller group, we will continue to take a look at what it means to be fully satisfied in our personal relationships with Christ, through study of a book called Uninvited by Lysa TerKeurst. This book explores the concept of “living loved when you feel less than, left out, and lonely”. We believe that this is a vital skill to learn in our culture of comparison. We look forward to growing together and learning more about who we were made to be as children of God. *We will be taking a break Easter week.

Easter & Birthday Angel Tree

God works with these families through us when the incarcerated parent works with the prison chaplain requesting Angel Tree Ministry. This is an oppor-tunity for the incarcerated parent to maintain a relationship with their child. Op-portunities abound for sharing Christian love with these children whose lives are disrupted by a parent’s absence. Our current opportunity is to provide Easter Baskets and a birthday gift through the end of current year to those families where the parent will not be home until next year or later. Angel Tree Ministry will be delivering Easter baskets and gifts to each of our Angel Tree children the week of April 14th. Easter Angel Tree gift tags will be hanging in Fellowship Hall on Sunday, March 31st, and, if necessary, on April 7th. There will be one gift tag for each of our 18 children. Choose a coded gift tag, sign up on the clip board, and enjoy selecting a basket of Easter fun for your Angel Tree child.

Please bring baskets and gifts with the coded tag attached to the church office by Palm Sunday, April 14th. Our 18 children range in age from 13mos. to 16 years. Gifts should be age-appropriate. Baskets containing stuffed toys and candy treats are readily available for young children. Older kids will love yummy, traditional Easter treats, but consider adding some good-smelling “lotions and potions” for young women or fixing up a little fishing tackle or tool box for the guys. Pack your selections in an Easter gift bag if you prefer…but remem-ber to attach the top portion of the tag you removed from the tree! A special card reflecting the Easter message will accompany each of the gifts you provide. There are no birthdays from May to December this year. We’d like to ask that you continue to pray for these children and their families. Thank you for all your caring support.
