MINISTER’S LETTER OCTOBER 2016

OPEN DOORS In many of our churches it is a regular practise to pray for sisters and brothers in other countries; especially for those who face persecution for being a Christian. We ask that they may sense God’s presence, stay strong in faith and are able to persevere. I have often wondered how strong or weak I would be in the face of persecution. Will I be able to stand and be a witness for Jesus? Recent events in France have caused much fear among Christians and others across Europe. As a result, some experts now recommend that churches bolt their doors closed during services. There also should be a person on the door whose job it is “to delay any offenders (including those who are not terrorists) so that the police can arrive and deal with them." (http://www.premier.org.uk/News/UK/, 31st August 2016) A substantial number of Christians find these suggestions helpful and acceptable to implement. They argue that safety comes first and that a duty of care exists to people in the congregation. We may, after all, be held responsible as a church if something happens to people whilst they are worshipping in our building. I am incredibly grateful that God does not operate along similar lines, or Jesus would never have become man. Coming among us as a baby, living in Palestine during Roman occupation, belonging to a people whose religious leaders would kill to protect their own power structure... it would never have passed the health and safety risk assessment! And quite right so, as we all know.

Yet Jesus took on that risk; in love for the Father he lived a dangerous life on earth. He continually pointed people to God, stood against hate and fear, verbally challenged abuse and false religion, loved unconditionally and gave up his life for his enemies (yes that includes me and you). He did so to make sure that we know about God’s ‘open door’ policy for the world! He trained up some friends, who would be able to point people to that policy after his resurrection and return to his Father. In preparation for the life they would live, Jesus warned that the whole world would hate them, persecute and put them to death because of him (Matthew 24:9). He urged them to fear God, who has power over our soul, rather than be afraid of those who can only kill our body (Matthew 10:28). But above all, he promised that everyone who believes in him as Saviour will never truly die but live with him and through him forever (John 3:16). The peace of our risen Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

NEWS OF THE FELLOWSHIP

Rev Hazel Day celebrated her birthday on Wednesday 21st September. Hazel has also recently moved in to Five Oaks Care Home in Cockfosters. We also wish a very happy birthday to Veronica Abbey, Tina George (both Sunday 18th September) and Sue Bullock (Wednesday 28th September). Our thoughts and prayers are with Ivan, Pam Mansley’s husband, who has recently been unwell. Congratulations to Sunder and Sheela Manuelraj’s eldest daughter, Rebekah, who recently got married in Sri Lanka. Let us remember all our church family in our prayers and caring.

Ever wondered what quilling is and how those beautiful designs are created from paper? Now is your chance to find out - a taster workshop is being run by members of The Quilling Guild where you can make a simple but attractive Christmas card. These will be on Saturdays 15th October and 3rd December from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at Christ Church URC. The JustOne Groups will meet as shown below. The sessions are open to all people across the pastorate. The groups are being run as a series of six sessions. The number in brackets is that session’s number in the series. EVANGELISM TRAINING EVENING

JUSTONE EMIRATES

On Saturday 8th July 2017, over 40,000 people of all ages will gather at the Emirates Stadium. JustOne at Emirates Stadium is a one-day event, bringing people together from all walks of life to celebrate the Christian faith and to give them an opportunity to hear the good news about Jesus Christ. JustOne will enable 20,000 people to invite ‘just one’ - a relative, friend, neighbour or colleague. Who will you invite?

HARVEST FESTIVAL

On Sunday 18th September, our Harvest Festival Family Parade Service took place. We are grateful to our friend Michaela Lawrence, who led the service for us. At the service, those in the congregation were invited to bring gifts of food which were sent to the North Enfield Foodbank, which is a part of The Trussell Trust’s network of 424 foodbanks. These gifts will help to provide emergency food for local people in crisis. The loose offering raised £114.27 for Sightsavers International, a UK-based international charity which helps to fight avoidable blindness and promotes equal opportunities for visually impaired people. As part of the occasion, members of our youth groups (Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Boys’ Brigade) decorated areas of the church in a harvest style. Adventurers is the name of the Junior Church at Christ Church and is for boys and girls aged 3 upwards.

The group meets for games, drama, craft, activities and fun, based around a Bible theme.

The group meets on Sundays at 11:00am in the church

for the all age part of the service, and then moves to the hall until 12:00pm.
