Rector’s Reflections Dear Friends in Christ, At our Annual Meeting in January I said, “I would like to suggest that one place to begin (responding to the challenge presented in that day’s readings) is to take this year to work together, guided by the Holy Spirit, to craft a mission statement that will give direction and shape to our life together for the next several years.” To craft a mission statement that is short enough to be easily memorized and comprehensive enough to embrace the fullness of the Gospel, we need to begin by gathering information. To do so, I need your help. Below are two questions. Please reflect on them, pray about your response. Then send your answers to me by email, write down your responses and bring your this sheet to church or mail it to the church. We would like to have everyone’s response by Easter Sunday (March 31). WHAT IS IT ABOUT CHRIST CHURCH THAT YOU HOPE NEVER CHANGES? WHAT SEEMS TO BE MISSING AT CHRIST CHURCHTHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE IN THE FUTURE? We need to hear from everyone. Even if you only write down a word or two after each question, please return your answers to me or a member of the Vestry. Yours in the Joy of the Resurrection,

VIEW FROM THE PEW

OBSERVING LENT Ash Wednesday fell on February 13 this year and of course it began the penitential season of

Lent. The Book of Common Prayer invites us to observe a holy Lent, “by self-examination and repentance, by prayer, fasting, and self-denial, and by reading and meditating on God’s holy word

And to make a right beginning of repentance, and as a mark of our moral nature, let us now kneel before the Lord, our maker and redeemer. ” (page 265)

The ashes used in “The Imposition of Ashes” are actually the residue of burned palms from the

previous Palm Sunday. Part of the dictionary definition of ash is dust. The Burial of the Dead service in our Book of Common Prayer contains this part of the prayer in The Committal: We commit (his/her)

body in the grave, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.“ (pages 485 & 501) In Young’s Analytical Concordance to the Bible, I found many references to ashes and dust. In

Genesis (2:7 KJV) God created man from dust, giving him the breath of life and man became a living soul. Also in Genesis (3:14 KJV) God condemned the serpent to eat dust upon his belly for all the days of its life. Likewise to Adam Genesis (3-19KJV) God said he would eat bread until he returned

to the ground. “For dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Other references to dust are varied, usually with references in sin and destruction.

As we trudge through the forty days, we have an undeniable light at the end of the tunnel of

Lent. This light is the light of Jesus. Thanks be to God.

. You are all always in my prayers. In His Love and peace,

Doris J. Weiler

The Health Benefits of Laughter

“Always laugh when you can, it is cheap medicine.” ― George Gordon Byron

“There is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.”

― Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol

Our Parish Nurse, Tippe, has started a game night which will be held once a month. There are social, emotional, health and spiritual benefits of fellowship, but what about laughter specifically? What are its benefits? According to WebMD in the last few decades, researchers have studied laughter's effects on the body and turned up some potentially interesting information on how it affects us:

• Blood flow . Researchers at the University of Maryland studied the effects on blood vessels when people were shown either comedies or dramas. After the screening, the blood vessels of the group who watched the comedy behaved normally -- expanding and contracting easily. But the blood vessels in people who watched the drama tended to tense up, restricting blood flow.

• Immune response . Increased stress is associated with decreased immune system response. Some studies have shown that the ability to use humor may raise the level of infection-fighting antibodies in the body and boost the levels of immune cells, as well.

• Blood sugar levels . One study of 19 people with diabetes looked at the effects of laughter on blood sugar levels. After eating, the group attended a tedious lecture. On the next day, the group ate the same meal and then watched a comedy. After the comedy, the group had lower blood sugar levels than they did after the lecture.

• Relaxation and sleep . The focus on the benefits of laughter really began with Norman Cousin's memoir, Anatomy of an Illness. Cousins, who was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis (a painful spine condition), found that a diet of comedies, like Marx Brothers’ films and episodes of Candid Camera, helped him feel better. He said that ten minutes of laughter allowed him two hours of pain-free sleep.

So bring your favorite board game and come reap the potential health benefits of a good laugh!

“The human race has only one really effective weapon and that is laughter.” ― Mark Twain
